You can bet that when the new Alessia Cara album arrives (The Pain of Growing is the title being thrown around), it will be a hot commodity.  The 22-year old Grammy-winning Canadian artist gave a masterclass in how to carve out success with a debut album.  Cara didn’t seem to be in any rush to follow-up Know-It-All, which arrived in 2015.  A release date for The Pain of Growing hasn’t been announced as of press time, but Cara continues to release singles ‘here and there’, including the one at hand, “Trust My Lonely.”

Cutting straight to the chase, “Trust My Lonely” is a departure from previous Alessia Cara singles… at least to a certain extent.  Lyrically, she remains open and honest – one of her best attributes.

“I’ve been your doll, that you poke for fun too long

So, you should go

Don’t look back, I won’t come back

Can’t do that no more.”

Also, there’s still ample urban flavor.  But, she also dives into tropical, reggae-tinged electro pop. That’s a mouthful, but the sound is definitely eclectic and arguably, a bit off-putting initially.  As “Trust My Lonely” progresses, it’s a ‘grower,’ though lacks the same ‘oomph’ as the singles that made Know-It-All such a big-time success.  Still, can’t go wrong with the message, and specifically, the chorus.

“Go get your praise from someone else
You did a number on my health
My world is brighter by itself
And I can do better, do better
You and I were swayin’ on the ropes
I found my footing on my own
I’m A-Okay, I’m good as gold
And I can do better, do better alone.”

Final Thoughts

Once again, Alessia Cara serves up a respectable, thoughtful single.  It’s not as accomplished as her best, but again, the message and theme are highly relatable.  Cara also sings superbly.  The production is odd, but it grows on you.
