After a two-year hiatus, Action Bronson returns with his sophomore album, Blue Chips 7000.  We first got a preview of Blue Chips 7000 with his promo single, “Let Me Breathe.” Worth noting, prior to “Let Me Breathe,” another single, “Durag vs. Headband” arrived in 2016, also appearing on the new album. “Let Me Breathe” was short in duration, yet possessed a familiarity.  In other words, Action Bronson didn’t reinvent the wheel by any means.  The same can be said of “The Chairman’s Intent.” One thing’s for sure, the rapper sure has a knack for song titles…or not.

“The Chairman’s Intent” opens with soulful, bluesy, gospel-tinged organ.  At first, it seems as if the rapper is going to “take us to church.” It’s only temporary.  The record remains old-school, as the production shifts to a coarse-sounding, East coast rap backdrop.  Action Bronson unleashes a solid, tough-minded flow.  Naturally, he takes the opportunity to flex, talking some mean trash talk with plenty of f-bombs.  He doesn’t present anything new or game-changing, but again, he’s got the flow working in his favor.

Final Thoughts

Keeping it short and sweet, “The Chairman’s Intent” is okay – good but not great.  As of yet, Action Bronson hasn’t dropped a truly commercial single.  Perhaps that’s not his intent, but his lack of commercial sensibility is likely to work against him on his sophomore album.  Sure, certain rappers can sell (and stream) albums without commercial hits, but others can’t. A song titled “The Chairman’s Intent” just doesn’t really ignite a fire on radio.
