ABC: A Random List of 2017, Songs by LetterNo BS… at least not much. Here is a random alphabetical playlist with little rhyme or reason.  There’s a song for each letter of the alphabet + a blurb.

G-Eazy asserted “this shit is not random.” In the case of this playlist, we beg to differ from Gerald. Simply put, this playlist is alphabetical.  We have selected one song per letter from 2017.  Hence, this playlist of 2017 songs is very random.  There’s little rhyme and honestly, no reason.  Ultimately, “it is what it is.” “It” is a hot mess. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

1.

A stands for “American Teen” by Khalid.

Album: American Teen, 2017

RCA

Khalid, American Teen © RCAKhalid opens his debut album, American Teen bubbly and exuberantly with title track, American Teen.” The single borrows from 80s pop and urban cues as its basis. Set in major key, the optimism is formidable.  Vocally, he’s firmly invested, without forcing things. Lyrically, the vibes are positive, as he explores life and the great opportunities ahead of him.

“‘Cause this is our year / So wake me up in the Spring / While I’m high off my American dream / We don’t always say what we mean / It’s the life of an American teen.”

Ultimately, the opener sets the tone for the album.

B stands for “Benz Truck (Гелик)” by Lil Peep

Album: Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1

Lil Peep

Lil Peep, Come Over When You're Sober Pt. 1 © Lil PeepUnfortunately, “Benz Truck (Гелик)” has some sadness attached that wasn’t there previously.  On Wednesday, November 15, 2017, 21-year old up-and-coming rapper Lil Peep died, presumably of an overdose. The tatted ‘emo-rapper’ as he’d been dubbed was on an upward trajectory in regards to his music career. Of “Benz Truck (Гелик),” the following has previously been written:

From the start, the sound [“Benz Truck (Гелик)”] is dark and foreboding.  For many, this particular song gives the first impression of Lil Peep.  He comes off both odd and unique, embedding his personality and one-of-a-kind status for sure.  A first listen of “Benz Truck” is a bit off-putting, yet with successive listens, it’s undoubtedly hypnotic.  It’s by no means deep, but somehow, Peep wins us over with his charm.  The hook is a selling point.

“Lil Bo Peep with a brand-new b*tch / In the back of the club with the Goth Boi Clique / Iced out teeth on an iced-out whip / With the limousine tints, you can suck my dick…”

Notably, “Benz Truck (Гелик)” appeared on two previous playlists: 10 Mercedes Benz Songs and 16 Foreign Car Songs.

C stands for “Call It What You Want” by Taylor Swift.

Album: Reputation

Big Machine

Taylor Swift, Reputation © Big MachineAdvanced single Call It What You Wantserves as the penultimate track of Reputation. Lyrically, Taylor Swift discusses her issues with others.  From the start, she plays the victim, informing the listener of the ‘healing process.’ The catchy chorus is one of the best features of “Call It What You Want.”  On the chorus, she references her current boyfriend, and being in a happy place following various adversity.

“My baby’s fit like a daydream / Walking with his head down / I’m the one he’s walking to / So call it what you want, yeah / Call it what you want to / My baby’s fly like a jet stream / High above the whole scene / Loves me like I’m brand new…”
