1. Jamal Roberts, “Heal”

“Heal” » 19 Recordings, Inc. / BMG Rights Management (US) LLC » 2025

Jamal Roberts, Heal [📷: 19 Recordings, Inc. / BMG Rights Management (US) LLC]“And take my past and take my sins / Like an empty sail takes the wind / And heal, heal, heal, heal, heal,” American Idol winner Jamal Roberts sings on his debut single, “Heal”.  If those lyrics sound familiar, it is because “Heal” is a cover. It was written and originally recorded by English singer/songwriter Tom Odell in 2013 (Long Way Down).  However, this cover is not a straightforward one, with some new lyrics and a different perspective compared to Odell’s original. Roberts sings with a rich, smooth tone.  His voice sounds ‘simply beautiful.’ With every lyric and note he sings, you believe every word he says.  While this song was originally an alternative/indie record, Roberts successfully transforms it into a moving, soulful R&B/gospel record.

When Roberts soars, showing off his impressive upper register and power, it gives chills.  Adding to the radiance of this cut is the production.  Initially subtle, “Heal” evolves into something much grander than the original – a truly spiritual experience.  The third and final verse is a distinct modification from the original. Odell’s version features four briefer verses, with an extended chorus following the fourth.  Roberts sings only three, two true to Odell, with the final verse fully embracing God’s healing. His ad-libs are spot-on.

“Oh, you’re the only one, the only that can heal

So please, heal from depression, Jesus, from suicidal thoughts, please heal

You’re the only one that can do it, from sickness, oh

Restoration right now.”

Amen 🙏! Hallelujah 🙌! Jamal Roberts does a superb job with “Heal”, making it his own.

2. Sexyy Red, “Hoochie Coochie”

“Hoochie Coochie” » Rebel / gamma. » 2025

Sexyy Red, Hoochie Coochie [📷: Rebel / gamma.]“Fuck them lame bitches (Baow), ratchet bitches better (You know that) / Real hoes, we don’t get cold, I’m fly in any weather (Bitch).” I am rarely speechless, but when a Sexyy Red song drops, my mouth is agape, down to the floor.  “Hoochie Coochie” is yet another instance I find myself shaking my head, surprised yet NOT surprised by what she’s rapping about.  Backed by a hard-hitting, malicious, minor-key musical backdrop (Mac Fly), she drops aggressive rhymes chock-full of naughty trash talk. There is nothing transcendent about “Hoochie Coochie” – it is what it is.  Sex is the modus operandi with the rapper asserting, “I’m throw this ass, he-he gon’ blow my back… / I’m like, ‘Damn, bae, hol’ up, you pullin’ on my tracks.’” Word.  Of course, the title track is repeated a ‘million times.’  At least she is expressive in her repetition of “Hoochie coochie / Hoochie coochie / Hoochie coochie…” “Hoochie Coochie” is unhinged AF.  Would we have it any other way? No, but how much more ratchet can she get?

3. Chris Brown, “Holy Blindfold”

“Holy Blindfold” » Chris Brown Entertainment / RCA » 2025

Chris Brown, Holy Blindfold [📷: Chris Brown Entertainment / RCA]“Ooh, your arms provide my shelter / Only way I sleep through my unrest.” Noted, and respected, Chris Brown.  The Grammy-winning R&B singer-songwriter has always possessed an amazing voice, but his antics and over-sexualized, rinse and repeat music have left more to be desired at times.  On “Holy Blindfold”, Brown delivers a clear change of pace, sounding starkly different from his unholy brand of music. Brown co-wrote “Holy Blindfold” with Tenroc, Jon Bellion, Jordan K. Johnson, MarcLo, Stefan Johnson, and Xplicit. The Monsters & Strangerz, Bellion, and Tenroc produced it.

“Holy Blindfold” begins fittingly with an ethereal sound. It is enigmatically beautiful.  Adding the excellence is a marvelous, anchoring groove.  Overall, the musical backdrop is lush and colorful, particularly toward the end of the song.  Matching the beauty of the production is a well-rounded, gorgeous vocal performance by Brown.  His tone is terrific. The vocal production gets the most out of him.  Although there is no profanity, Brown does reference sex: “Sex like the rain in the desert / She blazin’ hot as embers / Euphoric touch, I’m floatin’ away.” Still, this is kinder, gentler Chris Brown.  The melodies are tuneful from start to finish, with the chorus earning the record’s top honors:

“Let the sky fall

If I’m lookin’ at you, then my lens is a rose

(Lookin’ at you, lookin’ at you)

(If I’m lookin’ at you, then my lens is a rose)

Holy blindfold (Ooh)

When I’m lookin’ at you, God rest my soul

Feel like I saw the light

I feel like.”

What does he feel like? “Do-do-do-do, do-do-do / Do-do-do-do (God rest my soul).” That post-chorus is sweet, too. “Holy Blindfold” is a welcome, much-needed contrast for Brown.

4. GloRilla, “Hollon”

GLORIOUS » CMG / Interscope » 2024

GloRilla, Glorious [📷: CMG / Interscope]“Ayy, hol’ on, ho, hol’ on, hol’ on, hol’ on, ho.” Word, GloRilla.  The Grammy-nominated Memphis rapper dropped a banger with “Hollon”, the brief but potent second single from her debut studio album, GLORIOUS. FNZ, SkipOnDaBeat, and DJ Montay produced it.  Notably, “Hollon” samples the aughts banger, “Hold on Ho” by the late DJ Unk. GloRilla is true to herself throughout “Hollon.” She’s not playing with you [****]! “Ho, you must not know what you just started (Fuck),” she spits in the first verse, continuing, “Me and my bitches go gnarly / Give a fuck about this party.” Oh, snap! The rapper is unafraid to use her hands, including “beatin’ on bitches.” She also threatens to “Knock out all your thirty-two” in the second verse. Why would she do that? Ho, you were lookin’ at her man, so you ‘bout to be toothless!  There’s even more street talk in the third verse, where she prefers a Glock .19, won’t get serious but will make him cum, and asserts in the final line, “These niggas ain’t got no type, they want a stupid bitch (On gang).” Does GloRilla turn the game on its side with “Hollon”? No, but it’s fun and goes hard.  Hard-nosed, malicious production, big attitude, and that deep voice from the rapper make this song a success.

5. Jake Wesley Rogers, “Hot Gospel”

In The Key Of Love » Facet / Warner » 2025

Jake Wesley Rogers, In The Key of Love [📷: Facet / Warner]“When you’re looking out a great, big window / Talking to your therapist / And you say don’t wanna let go / But you don’t wanna exist.” Ooh-wee! That is a lot! Openly gay, Missouri-bred pop singer/songwriter Jake Wesley Rogers released his debut album, In The Key Of Love, in May 2025.  He wrote the intriguing  “Hot Gospel”  alongside producer Dallas Caton.

The instrumental backdrop is a fine canvas for Rogers to paint upon with his voice.  His instrument is distinct and incredibly expressive. Jake always brings his ‘A game,’ singing authentically and sincerely.  The first verse (excerpted above) sets the tone.  Memorably, in the pre-chorus, Rogers mentions his Missouri roots, God, and not needing “to believe to do it well.” Again, do what, Jake? “Do the hot gospel,” of course, he sings in the chorus, continuing, “Do the bad believer / Do the broken healer / Do the saint, do the spell / Do the heaven, do the hell.” The second verse is shorter than the first but remains thought-provoking.  “Hot Gospel” closes with an outro where Jake asserts, “I’m going to make the most of this hill / I’m gonna do the hot gospel.” At least part of that hill seems to be God and the conservative nature of Missouri. Rogers is incredibly talented.  The entertaining and reflective “Hot Gospel” is a prime example of his elite artistry. It is well-written lyrically and musically (harmony, melody, and instrumentally).

6. Lil Nas X, “Hotbox”

“HOTBOX” » Columbia » 2025

Lil Nas X, HOTBOX [📷: Columbia]“Bitch!” Woo! Following the profane, tone-setting ‘female dog’ utterance, Lil Nas X (Montero Lamar Hill) drops an infectious, irresistible chorus on his fun, unapologetic single, “HOTBOX”.  “Hit me with your lovin’ / Boy, I know you wanna / Pick me up and love me / I’ll be waitin’ on you.” Oh, snap! The Grammy-winning, out-and-proud rapper/singer is ‘on 10’ early on “HOTBOX.”  He’s supported by unique, kick-ass production courtesy of Take A Daytrip, Omer Fedi, and Ojivolta. Beyond a sickening beat and synths, the listener is treated to guitar – that’s all Omer!

Beyond his singing in the chorus, Lil Nas X raps assertively in the verses. His bars are infused with personality and the universal, three-letter-word, sex.  “I got my bitches in the back, and my bros in the front leadin’ / He keep lookin’ at me, I’ma make that boy a whole eater,” Nas X raps in the first verse, continuing, “I’ma fuck his friend too, baby, I’m a whole cheater / We can go to France, Eiffel Tower.” Holy shit! Nas X is equally aggressive rapping in the second verse:

“He said, ‘Let’s hit the back, hit the back, hit the backroom

You be the carpet, I be the vacuum

We can get it in, we can get it on’.”

Hoover, huh? Anyways, the bridge is a blast, too: “All that ass on your body, put some bounce on it.” Ooh-wee! Ultimately, Lil Nas X brings the fuckin’ heat (literally) on “HOTBOX”.

7. Purple Disco Machine & Benjamin Ingrosso, “Honey Boy” (Ft. Nile Rodgers & Shenseea)

Paradise » Columbia » 2024

Purple Disco Machine, Paradise [📷: Columbia]“My my oh my my / Won’t you come and let me dive / My my oh my my  / Won’t you come and play me all night, night.”  Handsome and talented, Benjamin Ingrosso shows off his sickening pipes on “Honey Boy”, a single from Paradise, the 2024 studio album by German DJ and producer, Purple Dance Machine. Attributed to Purple Dance Machine and Ingrosso, “Honey Boy” also features iconic guitarist, songwriter, and producer, Nile Rodgers, and gorgeous Jamaican singer, Shenseea. Purple Dance Machine, Rodgers, and Hampus Lindvall produced this infectious bop.

In verse one, Benjamin references his social awkwardness against an unawkward, groovy AF instrumental.  “I never said a single word to any girl / I was afraid that I would fuck it up,” he sings, adding, “But then one day I saw her face and the old me would’ve walked away / But then I took a chance.” Aww, Benjamin, way to be brave! However, she says, “Honey boy, you’re too young, but let me give you a night you won’t forget.” Shenseea puts her sexy two cents in during the pre-chorus (“Bet you like, bet you like how it’s feeling, oh”) and joins in during the chorus.  Ingrosso serves up a second ear-catching verse, including a jealous friend (“You should have seen the jealous look on his Danny’s face”) and this nameless woman taking Ben under her wing (“All your friends will never know the things that you will learn”). Oh, snap! The melodies are tuneful, and the lyrics are F-U-N. The music is sweet, too, thanks to Rodger’s guitar playing and his production/writing skills alongside Purple Disco Machine.  “Honey Boy” is an infectious, kickass, must-hear contemporary dance / dance-pop / disco cut.

8. Jack Harlow, “Hello Miss Johnson”

“Hello Miss Johnson” » Generation Now / Atlantic » 2024

Jack Harlow, Hello Miss Johnson [📷: Generation Now / Atlantic]“Other girls? Fuck them / I’d rather touch myself to you than fuck them.” That’s a lyric there, Jack Harlow! The Grammy-nominated rapper is back with “Hello Miss Johnson” which begins with a bang. Jack is falling for (and being charming to) this girl, and he needs to win over her mom, Miss Johnson. Aksel arvid, Clay Harlow (Jack’s brother), Angel López, and Don Cannon produced this cool, jazzy rap joint. Besides groove, the keys are ‘key’ to the success of the musical accompaniment, which sounds incredibly ‘neighborly.’ Watch the creative music video for “Hello Miss Johnson” – it complements the song superbly.

Beyond the entertaining music video and easygoing, ‘neighborly’ production, Harlow is the focus of “Hello Miss Johnson.”  His flow is smooth.  Even coming from the male perspective, the rapper’s charm is undeniable.  Do the lyrics go hard? Nah, but there’s nothing wrong with Jack fantasizing about this girl (“I think about you all the damn time, for real”). In the second verse, he has big plans, asserting “We could go Monaco, take you out on a boat,” adding, “Let’s go to Nice / And give your sister a niece / I’m tryna make the population increase.” Whoa! The chorus is ear-catching, too:

“Hello, Miss Johnson, you know why I’m callin’

You know I’ve been fallin’, fallin’ for your daughter

I think about her often, correct me if I’m wrong, but

Was it you that gave the eyes to her I be lost in? Thought so.”

Jack Harlow has ample rizz.  Does he have the bars? Debatable, but if nothing else, “Hello Miss Johnson” is entertaining – a surefire vibe.

9. Addison Rae, “High Fashion”

Addison » Columbia » 2025

Addison Rae, Addison [📷: Columbia]“Wantin’ somethin’ more than just a hit (Ah) / Nothing else can make me feel like this.” Noted, Addison Rae.  The pop artist excels on her single, “High Fashion”, the sixth track from her 2025 debut album, Addison. She co-wrote “High Fashion” with Tove Burman and producers Luka Kloser and ELVIRA (Elvira Anderfjärd). The musical backdrop is unique.  The sound palette is cool and sleek with modern touches. The song is groovy from the get-go.  Rae’s vocals are cool, calm, collected, and breathy.  Her tone is perfect for this vibe-laden number.  Besides her pleasant singing, the vocal production is sick.  Plenty of fun lyrics include the Rae asserting in the pre-chorus, “I know I’m drunk, but…” In the second verse, the sexual vibes are upped, though in a materialistic way: “I’d rather feel the sun kiss on my skin / With a cigarette pressed between my tits / You know I’m not an easy fuck (Ah) / But when it comes to shoes, I’ll be a slut.” High fashion, baby! Of course, the section to beat is the electrifying chorus:

“I don’t need your drugs

I’d rather get, rather get high fashion

I don’t want cheap love

I’d rather get high fashion.”

Ooh-wee! Ultimately, “High Fashion” is a pop bop that benefits from its cool, sleek sound, her breathy vocals, and entertaining lyrics.

10. ETHAN, “Honest”

“honest” » Ethan Choryin Luo » 2025

ETHAN, honest [📷: Ethan Choryin Luo]“I’d rather be alone and be myself / Than stay with you and be somebody else / Just being honest / I lost myself in you, you.” Honesty is the best policy, and ETHAN (Ethan Choryin Luo) is being incredibly honest in “honest”. This pop/R&B joint was written by Choryin Luo, Isadora Soliman, SKŸE, and producer Dilyn (Dylan Tarazona). ETHAN produces alongside Tarazona.  Commenting about his song in an Instagram post, ETHAN describes it as ‘the moment you realize that you’re finally getting to a place of healing after heartbreak.” The honesty of the songwriting is a huge selling point of “honest.” Despite the fact his ex-boyfriend “found someone new for your pictures,” ETHAN asserts, “It’s not a phase / I’ve never been more over you babe / Finally washed the smell of you outta my sweater / Forgetting memories I thought would last forever.” Word.  As always, Choryin Luo serves up sickening vocals that are smooth and sexy. He sounds as if he never breaks a sweat, singing in a cool, calm, and collected manner.  He gets a lift from sleek production that features sickening, modern synths and a sweet groove.  I adore the rhythmic nature of “honest,” from its musical accompaniment to the fast-paced melodic lines. Also, the melodies are tuneful, particularly the chorus. “Honest” is honestly pretty good!

11. Lana Del Rey, “Henry Come On”

“Henry, come on” » Lana Del Rey / Universal Music Operations Limited » 2025

Lana Del Rey, Henry, come on [📷: Lana Del Rey / Universal Music Operations Limited]“And it’s not because of you / That I turned out so dangerous / Yesterday, I heard God say, ‘It’s in your blood.’” Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Lana Del Rey remains ‘true to herself’ (alt-pop) while simultaneously entering into her country music era. “Henry, come on” sounds familiar and ‘different.’ She co-writes with Grammy winner Luke Laird, who is known for country music.  Laird and Drew Erickson produced it. Positively, “Henry, come on” is another gorgeous song Del Rey. The music backdrop begins spare, led by guitar accompaniment, but grows more lush as the song expands.  The sound palette includes piano, organ, bass, drums, and strings.  The vibe is alt-pop, country, and folk. Del Rey shines vocally, delivering her signature indulgent, moody performance.  Her tone is sublime.  Even as ‘moody’ as she might sound at times, Lana blesses our ears with her upper register, which is always a treat. Another pro regarding “Henry, come on” is the songwriting.  As always, Lana has a story to tell, and she adds some country sensibilities (“It’s last call, ‘Hey, y’all’ / Hang his hat up on the wall / Tell him that his cowgirl is gone”). Tried and true, “Henry, come on” is beautiful, though not the most exciting song.  While peasant and respectable, this five-minute-plus record does not necessarily move the needle.

12. Gunna, “HIM ALL ALONG”

The Last Wun  » Young Stoner Life / 300 Entertainment » 2024

Gunna, The Last Wun [📷: Young Stoner Life / 300 Entertainment]“Scrooge McDuck, got one of my rooms all flooded with gold (Gold) / I done bought two, four, five, six, seven, eight karats in stones (In stones).” Mentioning Scrooge McDuck in the opening line of the first verse of “HIM ALL ALONG” is badass, Gunna! Scrooge McDuck helps the melodic rapper illustrate his point flawlessly.  The banger features a sleek, ‘cool energy’ backdrop produced by Turbo and Yung Bleu. A sickening beat anchors it.  As electrifying as the accompaniment is, it is ‘HIM,’ Gunna who ‘kicks ass and takes names’ on “HIM ALL ALONG.” Consistently melodic and rhythmic, his cadence and flow are intriguing, on-point! “Hold my team, now I plant the seed, give it water to grow… / Half a million euros in a third-world country, I travel the coast…,” he raps in the first verse, adding, “Always said that I wanted, young Wunna done done it, I do what they don’t.” The second begins with a swallowing reference 😏. He also informs us that he’s “really a martian / Excusin’ me through like a pardon, and I’m protected by carbons.” EXTRATERRESTRIAL! The chorus is a flex:

“They was tryna stunt my growth, I was steady chasin’ my goals
Nigga, why you watchin’? I’m grown, nigga can’t take my throne
Goin’ through the motions, stay strong, he done been him all along (Him)
Look at all this money we done grown, lot of different places I done flown.”

Although “HIM ALL ALONG” is relatively brief, it’s potent AF. Gunna has no shortage of confidence and personality.

13. Dua Lipa, “Houdini”

Radical Optimism » Warner UK » 2024

Dua Lipa, Radical Optimism [📷: Warner]Grammy-winning pop superstar, Dua Lipa brings some serious magic on “Houdini”, the second track from her third album, Radical Optimism. She penned “Houdini” alongside Caroline Ailin, Danny L Harle, Kevin Parker (of Tame Impala fame), and Tobias Jesso Jr..  Harle and Parker also produced the record, characterized by a sick, danceable groove.  In addition to the beat, “Houdini” features a colorful palette of sounds – the keys and synths rock (in a 1980s sort of way, of course).  Beyond the backdrop, she brings the heat vocally.  Her performance is solid, yet non troppo, if you will.  It’s cool how the songwriting incorporates Harry Houdini into matters of the heart.  In this case, it’s singledom! The centerpiece, the chorus, arrives early, with Dua Lipa revealing the deck of cards:

“I come and I go

Tell me all the ways you need me

I’m not here for long

Catch me or I go Houdini

I come and I go

Prove you got the right to please me

Everybody knows

Catch me or I go Houdini.”

Ooh, wee! The melodies are tuneful in the verses as well, and beyond the chorus, the post-chorus is rad too: “If you’re good enough, you’ll find the way / Maybe you could cause a girl to change her ways / Do you think about it night and day? / Maybe you could be the one to make me stay.” “Houdini” = SUREFIRE BOP!

14. David Archuleta, “Hell Together”

“Hell Together” » Archie Music » 2024

David Archuleta, Hell Together [📷: Archie Music]“Bow your head, don’t be bold / You’ll survive by doin’ what you’re told.”  Thought-provoking lyrics that David Archuleta sings in the first verse of “Hell Together”. Archuleta experienced big life changes: coming out and leaving the Mormon church.  The opening lyrics are troubling signaling the infamous notion of praying the gay away.  The lyrics convey the attitude that some religions, religious institutions, and people of faith have toward non-heterosexuals. Archie continues singing beautifully and sincerely, “Said love is earned and we can’t choose / But the more you grow, you know the truth.” He penned this stirring, vulnerable ballad with Sam DeRosa, Ryan Nealon, and producer, Jordan Sherman. After David realizes how the myopic views of the church are, and the effect they’ve had on him, he’s concerned about disappointing his mom. That is where the most touching moment of occurs – the chorus:

“‘If I have to live without you

I don’t wanna live forever in someone else’s heaven

So let ‘em close the gates

Oh, if they don’t like the way you’re made, then they’re not any better

If Paradise is pressure, oh

We’ll go to hell together.”

🥹 The ultimate allyship – blood! The second verse expands on it: “You and me, that’s all we need / Blood is thicker than the pages that they read.” On the bridge, Archuleta regrets not breaking from the church before now. “Hell Together” brilliantly captures the struggles faced by many in the LGBTQ+ 🏳️‍🌈 community.

15. Alex Isley, “Hands”

WHEN (EP) » Free Lunch / Warner » 2025

Alex Isley, WHEN (EP) [📷: Free Lunch / Warner]If you are wondering, yes, Alex Isley is a member of the renowned Isley family.  Her father is guitar extraordinaire Ernie Isley.  Alex ‘brings the heat’ on “Hands”, the fourth track from her 2025 EP, WHEN. “The sheets on my skin, the only touch I’ve known,” she sings, beautifully and longingly in the first verse, continuing, “Nothing like the feeling that I left back home.” Isley wrote “Hands” alongside Robert Debouse, Terrell “Tre” Roper, and producer Camper. The musical backdrop beautifully captures a sensual R&B sound that dips into jazz and neo-soul.  The backdrop sounds like the bedroom with its romantic vibes and the sheer longing for touch.

“Out of reach, but you’re close enough / So at least I can see your face,” Alex sings in the pre-chorus, continuing, “But I’ll need to feel them on me / Pull me in to your embrace.” What does she want to feel on her? Those hands! She’s experienced the touch of her sheets being away, but the touch of hands is special.  “With your hand / No silk, no satin, just touch me with your hands,” she sings in the chorus, adding, “I’ll hold on ‘til you hold me with your hands.” In the second verse, she provides more specifics, often steamy.  “Your palms and fingertips stimulate me,” she sings, adding, “Curves anticipating.” Further titillating, there is caress, electricity, and being magnetic. Isley keeps it classy on “Hands”,  never crossing the line or uttering a filthy word. But don’t get it twisted. This is a dynamic sex song.  She sings beautifully, the songwriting is memorable, and the production is well-rounded.

Coco Jones, Why Not More? [📷: Def Jam Recordings / UMG Recordings, Inc.]“Why it’s gotta be your way? I want it to be mine.” Understood, Coco JonesI want it my way! She follows up with a bomb: “What, you think this is foreplay? Must be out of your mind.” Oh, snap! The Grammy-winning R&B singer brings heat, attitude, and sexiness to her soulful, dramatic single, “Here We Go (Uh Oh)”. “Here We Go (Uh Oh)” samples the beloved, Lenny Williams classic, “‘Cause I Love You”.  Not only is the sound and meter of the Williams joint fuel for the fire but so is the theme.  Sure, things are bumpy in the excerpted pre-chorus, but by the chorus, the feels return!

“I know when you said, ‘goodbye,’ you ain’t mean no goodbye

Here we go, uh-oh, ah

I know when you get to likin’ my pictures in time

Here we go, uh-oh.”

Vocally, Jones sounds beastly. She sings expressively. She gives her all, putting her heart and soul into the performance. “Better man, why don’t you just be the better man? / Why I gotta be the bigger man?” she asks in the dynamic bridge. Throughout, the melodies are tuneful. Her vocal ad-libs are magnificent. She penned “Here We Go (Uh Oh)” alongside Williams and Michael Bennett (the sampled material), Sara Diamond, and producers Cardiak and WU10. The sound is classic yet refreshing in 2024. The excellence of “Here We Go (Uh Oh)” speaks for itself.

17. Whitechapel, “Hymns in Dissonance”

Hymns in Dissonance » Metal Blade » 2025

Whitechapel, Hymns in Dissonance [📷: Metal Blade]“Rehtaf fo seil / Rehtaf fo eht ssyba / Ew emoc morf woleb / Nepo ruoy seye gnik Reficul / Redrum meht lla.” Say what, now?! What the hell does that mean? The lyrics from the intro of “Hymns in Dissonance” are reversed… Dissonance indeed! What Phil Bozeman, the Whitechapel frontman sings is “Father of lies / Father of the abyss / We come from below / Open your eyes king Lucifer / Murder them all.” Hellish to the nth degree! “Hymns in Dissonance” is the second track from the Tennessee death metal band’s ninth studio album, Hymns in Dissonance, released in 2025.

“Hymns in Dissonance” is chaotic, noisy, and infernal from the onset. The pummeling drums and jagged guitars hit you right in the chest. Throughout, there are different musical changes, particularly tempo changes during various sections. Bozeman’s boisterous, unclean vocals catch the ears from the beginning.  With reversed lyrics setting the tone, the songwriting draws ample attention.  The lyrics are intense and intriguing.  “I stand before this withered sepulcher / Saturating my flesh in sulfur,” Phil sings in the first verse, adding, “The fruitful now rotten / Restrained by roots of feces and mold.” Damn – more liked damned!  It gets worse: “Feel the worms crawl in your evеry orifice/ Your eyes start to jaundice as they make their way through / Converted to our ways, you can’t ignore this / Saved from the faith that’ll fuck you.” Faith that’ll fuck you, huh? “Hymns in Dissonance,” indeed.  In line with sinfulness, in the third verse, Bozeman asserts, “As you lay impaled on this inverted cross / I masticate the throats of your lambs / As I masturbate to the sound of them choking.” Yes, it’s giving unholy shit! The chorus can’t be denied either, referencing previous Whitechapel songs, and memorably stating, “To all that are dead, stay dead / We are the means to a messiahbolical end.” Dark, damning, anti-Christian (“The trinity denied”) and Satanic AF, “Hymns in Dissonance” is something else, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Moving on, Shawn, released in 2024, marked the Canadian heartthrob’s first album in nearly four years. “Heart of Gold” marked the fourth single and sixth track from the LP. “You had a heart of gold,” Mendes sings in the chorus, adding, “You left too soon, it was out of your control / Underneath your skin and bone / You had a heart of gold.” In “Heart of Gold,” Mendes has lost a friend, whom he memorializes and shares his reaction.  The verses provide context. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there / To hug your mama at the funeral,” he sings in the first verse, confirming the unfortunate ending.   In the second verse, Shawn asserts, “I didn’t even cry / I didn’t even feel the pain / And then it hit me all at once / When we talked about you yesterday.” As he has throughout the Shawn album cycle, Mendes is transparent about what he’s been experiencing in life.  Losing a friend is never easy, and it seems that Shawn didn’t fully process the loss of this person.  Grief hits everyone differently.  As always, Mendes sings beautifully – his voice is a gift.  The songwriting is also well-rounded, penned by Mendes, Mike Sabath, Eddie Benjamin, and Scott Harris.  The sound is folksy, singer-songwriter pop.  He and Sabath produced this thoughtful track.  “Heart of Gold” marks another well-rounded addition to his catalog.

19. Debbii Dawson, “Happy World”

How To Be Human – EP » RCA / Debbii Dawson Music » 2024

Debbii Dawson, How To Be Human - EP [📷: RCA]“I tell myself that it’s a happy world / Buy my own little place I can hide / Kinda dark but at least it’s mine.” Those memorable lyrics from talented pop singer-songwriter Debbii Dawson hail from the chorus of “Happy World”. “Happy World” is the delightful single and second track from Dawson’s 2024 EP, How To Be Human – EP.  She adds in the chorus, “House on fire but I’m closing the blinds / Tell myself, tell myself that I’m fine.” Way to embrace happiness… fire and all! Dawson co-wrote “Happy” alongside Alida and producer Zhone. From the opening to the closing tip, “Happy World” shines. The instrumental is stellar – the perfect fuel for Dawson’s fire.  The backdrop is colorful, incorporating cues idiomatic of pop, rock, and more ‘artful,’ alternative music.  One constant thing is the groove that is potent to the nth degree.  Beyond the music, Dawson is on autopilot.  Her vocals are beautiful, commanding, and nuanced, never missing a note or a beat.  The melodies she sings are thoughtfully composed, tuneful, and the lyrics are memorable too.  Despite the adversity, Debbii embodies happiness, even if things aren’t. For example, “Trouble comes trying to knock on my door / Painted red, it can’t reach me no more / I’ll stay in life six feet underground.” Whoa! Whether or not “The grass is [actually] always green / I never want to leave,” or that’s just what Dawson tells herself, there is no doubt that she ‘put her foot’ into “Happy World”.

20. David Kushner, “Hero”

The Dichotomy » David Kushner / Miserable Music Group, LLC » 2024

David Kushner, The Dichotomy [📷: David Kushner / Miserable Music Group, LLC]“What we had was thin / So, we couldn’t survive,” David Kushner sings in the first verse of “Hero”, the fourth track from his 2024 debut album, The Dichotomy. He adds, “Bad times can win / While good things can die.” He has a point. Kushner is a captivating musician.  Kushner’s robust, distinct baritone is impressive – a draw to his music.  He co-wrote “Hero” with Scott Harris and producer Steve Rusch. Backed primarily by piano, Kushner delivers another cinematic pop gem.

The piano accompaniment stands out. Additionally, as “Hero” progresses, more instrumentation supports David Kushner.  Still, his rich, deep, nuanced vocals take the cake. In the first verse, Kushner spoils us with that sick baritone.  In the second verse, he sings in his upper register, contrasting with the first verse.  Lyrically and thematically, the vibes are similar.  “Walking through Heaven / I’m walking through flames,” he sings, continuing, “This can’t be mended / It won’t be the same.” Word. Before the second verse, we hear David shine in his upper register in the most memorable section of the song, the chorus:

“I was the hero, but you get the glory

Now I’m the villain inside of your story

I was the saint, you used to adore me

Now I’m the villain inside of your story.”

Beyond the chorus, the bridge finds Kushner showing off some falsetto – a treat. Kushner, renowned for his cinematic, dramatic performances, delivers another superb one with “Hero”.

21. BRONZE AVERY, “HEATWAVE”

HEATWAVE » BRONZE AVERY » 2024

BRONZE AVERY, HEATWAVE [📷: BRONZE AVERY]“Flash my titties from the sunroof / Merman in the lagoon / Splashing to a pop tune on a boulder.” Say what now?! BRONZE AVERY flashes his titties as the lyrics of “HEATWAVE” suggest. “HEATWAVE” is the opener from his 2024 album, HEATWAVE.  This carefree song sets the tone for the album.  As a single, it perfectly captures sexy, summery vibes with no restrictions. AVERY penned “HEATWAVE” himself.  He produced it alongside Dex Barstad.  It is bright, energetic, and feel-good from the opening tip.  If you are stressed, there’s no way you won’t forget about it while listening and dancing to this infectious pop joint.  BRONZE AVERY says it best in the chorus:

“Imma do what I want

Imma do it my way

Feel it dripping all over my face

In the sweat of the club

At the front of the stage

Burning up in the heatwave.”

The man’s just living it up without a worry in the world! The audio is giving, and the accompanying music video is flaming hot! How so? It is incredibly queer, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.  It begins with AVERY messing around with the beautiful and hunky Zane Phillips. As cute (and hot) a couple as BRONZE and Zane make, BRONZE doesn’t appear tethered to him.  Boys just wanna have fun, right? On “HEATWAVE”, BRONZE AVERY is having a blast and sharing sweet, evergreen summer music with the world.

22. Tonio Armani, “Help Me Find My Drawls”

“Help Me Find My Drawls” » Armani Music Group » 2024

Tonio Armani, Help Me Find My Drawls [📷: Armani Music Group]“So, I told her / If I come, I can’t stay too long.” Hmm, we know where this is going, Tonio Armani (Travis Antonio Gardner) 😏 😈. The southern soul singer/songwriter from Columbus, Georgia, continues singing on his entertaining 2024 single, “Help Me Find My Drawls”, “Soon as I get to the room / We got right down to it / We start gettin’ it on.” After getting busy with this woman who “wanna get nasty,” Armani is in search for his drawls, aka underwear.  The desperation is real, y’all – he’s got to find those boxers… or briefs… whatever his preference is!

Tonio Armani ‘brings the house down’ on “Help Me Find My Drawls.” His voice is distinct from the get-go.  He is gritty and raspy, oozing with soul.  The throwback vibes are refreshing as he ‘puts his all’ in this sex song. Yes, they ‘do it,’ hence why he’s searching for his undies, but he refrains from being explicit or TMI.  Instead, his tale of this rendezvous is only secondary, while the search for his underwear is hilarious:

“Help me find my drawls

(Help me find my drawls)

I got somewhere to be

Yes, I do, lady

Somewhere in the bedroom

Oh Lord

That’s the only place they could be.”

The southern charm and personality that Armani brings amplify the song. This is especially evident in the extended outro where he still has not found them (“Oh, you got to find my drawls today”).  Making “Help Me Find My Drawls” even better is the musical backdrop, which is infused with the soul of old yet sounds vibrant and fully representative of 2020s R&B.

23. Summer Walker, “Heart Of A Woman”

“Heart Of A Woman” » LVRN / Interscope » 2024

Summer Walker, Heart Of A Woman [📷: LVRN / Interscope]In the gospel according to Summer Walker, the “Only thing that’s saving you / Is the heart of a woman.” “Heart Of A Woman” is the promo single from Walker’s third studio album, Finally Over It.  Walker and Don Dias penned this R&B cut incorporating the cool, classic ‘urban’ sound – think the 1990s, early 00s R&B. Tavaras Jordan produced the record, which thrives off keys, strings, and refined musical cues.

As always, Summer Walker matches the ‘cool energy’ of the instrumental accompaniment.  Her vocals are smooth and warm. She never sounds like she breaks a sweet.  Even so, she remains potent and firmly in command of the track.  Besides sweet lead vocals, the supporting background vocals are awesome.  Also, the vocal production is well-rounded.  Even though Walker never gets too high, it doesn’t mean she doesn’t bring attitude.  “Wanna give up on you but, damn, I know I can’t / I put the blame on me for giving you chance after chance,” she sings in the first verse.  In the second, she asserts, “It’s my mind and my soul versus your pride / Nigga, check your ego ‘cause I left mine at the door.” Oh, snap! Memorably, in the pre-chorus, she tells him, “Put your words on your life this time / And I hope your ass ain’t lyin’ ‘cause / Only thing that’s saving you / Is the heart of a woman.” “Heart Of A Woman” is another bop from Queen Summer Walker!

24. RYANN, “Housewife”

Housewife” » RYANN » 2025

RYANN, Housewife [📷: RYANN]“We ate lasagna / Now you’re lying on top of me / You whisper: I love you / I say it back.” Aww, how sweet RYANN (Ryan Adriaens)! The 21-year-old singer/songwriter from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 has found love despite the fact he did not feel like it was possible on “Housewife”: “I had never really been in love before / I had convinced myself I was asexual.” He is not asexual, hinted at by the lyrics from the first verse, with confirmation provided in the second. The single cover art stands out with the Gen-Z singer/songwriter dressed in a housedress as a housewife.  Notably, the spray bottle of cleaning solution is labeled with his name.  All the while, the handsome musician sports yellow gloves, a yellow handcloth, and the pride flag painted on his face, proudly 🏳️‍🌈. Perhaps those “Gay Struggles” are over!

“Housewife” features warm, pop production.  The warmth of the musical backdrop is matched by beautiful, cool, calm, and collected vocals by RYANN.  Love is the modus operandi, with Adriaens willing to be his housewife. Naturally, he references cleaning and even goes so far as to assert he’ll give birth to his children (“And I’ll give birth to your children as many as you would like”). Adriaens is expressing his dedication to his love. As mentioned earlier, this previously convinced ace sings about great sex: “We lie naked in bed / We had our moment in the dark / You told me it was the best you’ve ever had / And I agreed.”  The bridge provides contrast. RYANN sings about how it didn’t feel right with his ex (“I didn’t want to be his housewife”).  The centerpiece of “Housewife” is the chorus, which acknowledges how strongly he feels about his boyfriend.

25. Chappell Roan, “HOT TO GO!”

The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess » KRA International Inc. / Island » 2023

Chappell Roan, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess [📷: KRA International Inc. / Island]“Five, six / Five, six, seven, eight.” WOO! The ascent of Chappell Roan (Kayleigh Rose Amstutz) was swift! The Midwest-born and bred, Los Angeles singer/songwriter experienced one of the biggest breakouts of any musician in 2024.  The biggest song fueling her ascent was the infectious, top 10 hit, “Good Luck, Babe!”.  “Good Luck, Babe” doesn’t appear on her 2023 debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.  Another must-hear bop, top 30 hit, “HOT TO GO!”, does. “HOT TO GO!” is the seventh track from the critically acclaimed debut LP.  She penned it alongside producer Daniel Nigro.

“I don’t want the world, but I’ll take this city / Who can blame a girl? Call me hot, not pretty.” From the beginning, Roan is filled with attitude and energy. The instrumental accompaniment, likewise, is exuberant. 1980s dance and synthpop are written all over the cheerleader-inspired bop. The synths shimmer while the groove is giving dancefloor.  The lyrics are engaging and fun to the nth degree.  Chappell is playful throughout. “Baby, do you like this beat? / I made it, so you’d dance with me,” she asserts in the refrain, adding, “It’s like a hundred ninety-nine degrees / When you’re doing it with me, doing it with me.” Oh, the sexual innuendo! The refrain precedes the pre-chorus, where Roan spells! “H-O-T-T-O-G-O /… Dance it out, you’re hot to go.” And, for emphasis, the chorus emphasizes being “hot to go,” of course! The second verse is similar to the first, driven by desire: “No one’s touched me there in a damn hot minute.” Ooh-wee, Chappell! The second refrain is slightly altered, trading doing for sleep 😈. Eventually, Roan closes the song with the outro where she asks, “Woo, you coming home with me? / Okay, it’s hot / I’ll call a cab.” “HOT TO GO!” is the sugar honey iced tea, just like Chappell Roan is. If you haven’t already done so, you’ll have this LGBTQ 🏳️‍🌈 bop on repeat! #SICKENING!
