1. Maren Morris, β€œCircles Around This Town”

🎡 β€œCircles Around This Town” β€’ 🏷 Sony Music Entertainment β€’ πŸ“… 2022

Maren Morris, "Circles Around This Town" [πŸ“·: Sony Music Entertainment]πŸ† Grammy-winning country singer/songwriter πŸŽ™ Maren Morris shines on her first single of 2022, 🎡 β€œCircles Around This Town”.  On β€œCircles,” she co-writes with a talented crew: 🎼✍ Jimmy Robbins, 🎼✍ Julia Michaels, and her husband, 🎼✍ Ryan Hurd. Furthermore, β€˜it’ producer πŸŽ› Greg Kurstin works behind the board.

Vocally, Morris sounds strong πŸ’ͺ on β€œCircles Around This Town.” Besides being assertive and exhibiting a great tone, she also gives ample personality.  She plays to her country fan base, but pop fans will enjoy this one too. Among my favorite lyrics occurs during the second verse: β€œSo many times, I thought about lΠ΅avin’ / Got my ass kicked tryin’ to compete with / Everybody else’s ones that got away.” Thematically, Maren reminisces on her β€˜come up’ – how hard it was to get where she is now moving to Nashville.  Even though she’s made it, she acknowledges she’s β€œStill got the pedal down / Drivin’ circles around this town.” Of course, those awesome lyrics hail from the chorus, which is big and memorable.

2. Doja Cat, β€œBeen Like This”

πŸ’Ώ Planet Her β€’ 🏷 Kemosabe / RCA β€’ πŸ“… 2021

Doja Cat, Planet Her [πŸ“·: Kemosabe / RCA]β€œWho is frontin’, babe? / We don’t have fun these days / It’s more than complicated.” Uh-oh – sounds like trouble in paradise, πŸŽ™ Doja Cat! 🎡 β€œBeen Like This” features the gift of pitch shift on the intro vocals performed by πŸŽ™ Bryson Tiller.  This intro sets the tone and provides contrast to Doja.

β€œSince you’ve been like this

Baby, I don’t really wanna be in like this

Ever since you’ve been like this

Baby, I don’t really wanna be in like this.”

Tiller’s intro eventually reappears as the chorus, performed by Doja, of course. When the πŸ† Grammy-nominated pop artist enters the mix, she brings ample firepower.  The balance between singing and rapping continues to be one of the selling points of πŸ’Ώ Planet Her as a whole.  One specific selling point on β€œBeen Like This” is the sweet upper register Dlamini exhibits toward the end.

3. Maxwell, β€œThis Woman’s Work”

πŸ’Ώ Now β€’ 🏷 Columbia β€’ πŸ“… 2001

Maxwell, Now [πŸ“·: Sony]β€œI should be crying but I just can’t let it show / I should be hoping but I can’t stop thinking / All the things we should’ve said that I never said…” I’m biased, but πŸ† Grammy-winning R&B singer/songwriter πŸŽ™ Maxwell is one of the best R&B artists in the game.  His voice – that pure falsetto – just does something to you when you listen.  Even though he rarely releases new music, the Haitian-Puerto Rican American singer has solidified his legacy with his brilliant work in the past.  Specifically, his third studio album πŸ’Ώ Now, released at the height of the neo-soul era in 2001, features the crΓ¨me de la crΓ¨me of his career.  That, my friends, includes 🎡 β€œThis Woman’s Work.”

Just in case you weren’t aware, β€œThis Woman’s Work” is actually a cover – insert totally shook, *shocked gasps* here.  That’s he covers the gorgeous πŸŽ™ 🎼✍ Kate Bush gem from her 1989 album, πŸ’Ώ The Sensual World. As is the mark of a truly gifted musician, he makes this cover sound as if the song were his own original.  I have no doubt Bush co-signs his magnificent R&B take, which provides her even greater accolades as a singer/songwriter.

β€œGive me these moments

Give them back to me

Give me that little kiss

Give me your talking hands.”

4. Maroon 5, β€œThis Summer”

πŸ’Ώ V β€’ 🏷 Interscope β€’ πŸ“… 2015

Maroon 5, V [πŸ“·: Interscope]β€œHer body’s like the summer / I’m in a trance or something / Her mind is not, no / As sharp as all her diamonds.” Following a reissue of their album πŸ’Ώ V, πŸŽ™ Maroon 5 gave us the ultimate guilty pleasure to make summer even better – 🎡 β€œThis Summer”. Originally, the full, expletive bearing title was what naturally made the song shocking: β€œThis Summer’s Gonna Hurt Like a Motherfucker.”

β€œThis summer’s gonna hurt like a motherfucker

Fucker

This summer’s gonna hurt like a motherfucker

Fucker.”

While the full titular lyric is ear-catching thanks to the MF-bomb, ultimately, β€œThis Summer” is simply a relatively fun, big ole pop single.  No, it won’t supplant their classics, but this frank cut lacking depth is catchy as bleep!  Essentially, πŸŽ™ Adam Levine sings about a hot girl whose hotness is her sole virtue. In other words, her flaws eclipse the looks.

β€œI see her dancing on a fool

Like she’s seventeen and cool

She really thinks that she can move

But it’s just nasty

I see her when I go to sleep

I check my phone when I am weak

She never posts anything deep

β€˜Cause she’s so fancy.”

Yup, β€œThis summer’s gonna hurt” indeed!

5. BIA, β€œCan’t Touch This”

πŸ’Ώ For Certain β€’ 🏷 Epic β€’ πŸ“… 2021

BIA, For Certain (Deluxe) [πŸ“·: Epic]β€œMy milkshake brings all the boys to the yard / And they’re like, it’s better than yours / Damn right, it’s better than yours / I can teach you, but I have to charge.” Does anybody remember this aughts classic? Well, if not, let me fill you in! It’s 🎡 β€œMilkshake” by πŸŽ™ Kelis.  Why do I mention this R&B song when I’m supposed to write about the πŸŽ™ BIA β€˜this’ song, 🎡 β€œCan’t Touch This” (πŸ’Ώ For Certain, 2021)? Well, BIA sampled the aughts gem in β€œCan’t Touch This,” featuring that stellar production by πŸŽ› The Neptunes

Besides sampling β€œMilkshake,” BIA also lifts off the chorus, tweaking it to her liking in the second verse: β€œMy milkshake brings all the boys to the yard (Oh) / in the foreign cars / And they’re like, it’s better than yours / Damn right, it’s better than yours.” Woo! It’s not all borrowing though! BIA brings ample personality in the verses and of course, the centerpiece, the chorus.  Over banging production by πŸŽ› IRoccOnTheBeat, πŸŽ› London Jae, and πŸŽ› DJ Young Pharaoh, she spits:

β€œNo stylist, I don’t do repeats

I got money, bitch, I’m knee-deep

All hunnids, drippin’ in CC

Might pop that pussy like FreakNik

No mileage, boy, you can’t touch this

No bodies, boy, you ain’t fuck shit

I’m on islands, whippin’ them Porsches (Skrr)

Run shit, and your nigga endorse it (Sheesh).”

Woo! BIA doesn’t play around in the least! β€œCan’t Touch This” BE-OTCHES!

6. Troye Sivan, β€œDance to This”

Ft. Ariana Grande

πŸ’Ώ Bloom β€’ 🏷 Universal Music Australia Pty Ltd. β€’ πŸ“… 2018

Troye Sivan, Bloom [πŸ“·: Capitol]β€œWe can just dance to this / Don’t take much to start me / We can just dance to this / Push up on my body, yeah.” 🎡 β€œDance to This” has a sexy, danceable backdrop and overall sound.  The record possesses an incredible smoothness with its consistent, driving rhythm, subtle pad, and guitar lead on the chorus. In addition to the core sound, there are some other unique production touches, notably the β€˜80s nostalgia’ that arrives with the boxy drums of the bridge.  Enough about the production, let’s focus on the stars from his πŸ’Ώ Bloom standout, shall we?

πŸŽ™ Troye Sivan blesses the track with super smooth vocals on the first verse.  He does an excellent job of showing his flexibility. He sings in both his low/mid-register as well as giving us a taste of his lighter, upper register. πŸ† Grammy winner πŸŽ™ Ariana Grande arrives in the second verse, showcasing the sheer beauty, richness, and robustness of her instrument. Superb vocal chemistry between Sivan and Grande is the story on the second chorus. β€œDance to This” is a thrilling, well-rounded single and great performance by Sivan and Grande.  These two artists make an awesome musical pair to say the least.

7. Vampire Weekend, β€œThis Life”

πŸ’Ώ Father of the Bride β€’ πŸ· Sony β€’ πŸ“… 2019

Vampire Weekend, Father of the Bride [πŸ“·: Sony Music]In 2019, πŸ† Grammy-winning alternative collective πŸŽ™ Vampire Weekend returned with an alluring, consistent, and well-rounded fourth studio album, πŸ’Ώ Father of the Bride.  There was no shortage of highlights, and honestly, I wasn’t the east bit surprised that the album was a contender for the highly coveted Album of the Year. Perhaps πŸŽ΅ β€œThis Life” isn’t the first bop from Father of the Bride that comes to mind (Looking at you πŸŽ΅ β€œHarmony Hall” and πŸŽ΅ β€œ2021”), yet it’s pretty sweet.

The thrilling β€œThis Life” thrives off its major-key, optimistic sound. Even more alluring are the lyrics and themes.  So, what do you cover πŸŽ™ Ezra Koenig? Do you actually β€œgive a fuck about an Oxford Comma”, now, haha (couldn’t resist, sorry). In all seriousness, β€œThis Life” includes literal, mutual relationship issues (β€œI’ve been cheating on, cheating on you”), war (β€œI just thought the drums of war beat louder warnings”), and existential matters (β€œBaby, I know death probably hasn’t happened yet / β€˜Cause I don’t remember living life before this”).  β€œThis Life” – a THIS song that is certainly centered on life!

8. Jeremy Zucker & Chelsea Cutler, β€œthis is how you fall in love”

πŸ’Ώ brent ii β€’ 🏷 Republic β€’ πŸ“… 2021

Jeremy Zucker & Chelsea Cutler, brent ii (EP) [πŸ“· : Republic]β€œThis is how you fall in love / Let go and I’ll hold you up.” Aww, what better subject matter than love for a pop duet? Continue with that excerpt, please! β€œSo, pull me tight and close your eyes / Oh, my love, side to side” Ah – chorus that exemplifies sheer perfection to the nth degree! On 🎡 β€œthis is how you fall in love” from πŸ’Ώ brent ii, πŸŽ™ Jeremy Zucker and πŸŽ™ Chelsea Cutler join forces delivering a radiant song all about L-O-V-E.  The chemistry between the two is superb, while separately, they sound sweet as well. Zucker and Cutler both wrote and produced this sub-three-minute gem.

On β€œthis is how you fall in love,” Zucker delivers a gorgeous vocal performance; his tone is impeccable.  He sings with incredible authenticity; he sounds expressive, nuanced, and tender.  One of his best moments is incredibly subtle, when he sings β€œOh” on the pre-chorus (it recurs post-second verse). The same praise can be bestowed upon Cutler, who appears on the second verse.  Notably, she has an expanded sound palette accompanying her, as well as getting a lift via layered vocals.  Cutler’s second verse serves as the transition to loftier heights for β€œthis is how you fall in love.”  Even as the record ascends to a fever pitch, Zucker and Cutler’s β€˜duet section’ intentionally brings things back down – a great thoughtful touch. β€œThis is how you fall in love” possesses both a degree of simplicity as well as a degree of utter satisfaction.

9. Marteen, β€œThis Shit Sux”

πŸ’Ώ 8 β€’ 🏷 New Mogul / EMPIRE β€’ πŸ“… 2019

Marteen, 8 [πŸ“·: New Mogul Records / EMPIRE]β€œAye / I guess that he meant more than me…” Sigh, matters of the heart have R&B singer/songwriter πŸŽ™ Marteen all messed up.  Love’ll do that shit – just saying!  The Berkley-born standout β€˜keeps it 100’ when it comes to being heartbroken on the short, sweet, and pained single, 🎡 β€œThis Shit Sux” (πŸ’Ώ 8, 2019). The production is lush and smooth.  The backdrop is the perfect fuel for Marteen to reminisce back on love, the hardships of love, and his present disgust.

Following the short first verse (excerpted above), he drops the reminiscent pre-chorus on the listeners:

β€œI know we had our off days

I thought that we were always

Remember you would say you were gonna change

But it was hard to fake.”

Expectedly, he drops the β€˜s-bomb’ on the memorable chorus.  Sure, there’s not much deep about a line like β€œThis shit sucks” or even its supporting lines, but Marteen perfectly paints the state of his mind and heart.  Furthermore, everyone can relate to the profane, β€˜poopy’ titular lyric.  All in all, Marteen drops a respectable, well-executed heartbreak record.  He doesn’t reinvent pain, specifically the struggle of love, but he totally sells the plight he’s experiencing.  Vocally, his youthful pipes are refreshing, and the production work provides him with a lift.  Safe to say, nothing β€œsux” about this record in the least, or the talented Marteen himself.

10. Kehlani, β€œNights Like This”

Ft. Ty Dolla $ign

πŸ’Ώ While We Wait β€’ 🏷 Atlantic β€’ πŸ“… 2019

Kehlani, While We Wait [πŸ“·: Atlantic]β€œBut all that glitters isn’t gold, I was blinded / Should have never gave you my heart on consignment.” πŸ† Grammy-nominated R&B singer πŸŽ™ Kehlani gets the assist from the ever-ubiquitous πŸŽ™ Ty Dolla $ign on πŸŽ΅ β€œNights Like This”, the crown jewel of her 2019 mixtape, πŸ’Ώ While We Wait. While β€œNights Like This” ends up being more underrated than it ever should be, there’s plenty to sink your teeth into the night-centric track.

Kehlani’s tone and overall performance are a massive selling point. In addition to a sensational, nuanced vocal, β€œNights Like This” benefits from its production work, idiomatic of a modern R&B record, yet also featuring classic cues from the 90s and 00s. Adding to the excellence is respectable songwriting this is relatable.  The pre-chorus and chorus sections are among the highlights. All in all, she excels on β€œNights Like This.”

11. Childish Gambino, β€œThis Is America”

🎡 β€œThis Is America” β€’ 🏷 mcDJ Recording / RCA β€’ πŸ“… 2018

Childish Gambino, This is America [πŸ“·: RCA]πŸŽ™ Childish Gambino (πŸŽ™ Donald Glover) returned with a bang in 2018 with single 🎡 β€œThis is America”.  While the lyrical approach is simple on this record, the socially-conscious message that Glover makes is pitch-perfect – relevant to the times. Throughout the course of this πŸ† Grammy-winning record, Glover references policing in America and gun violence, important issues in the black community, as well as focusing on excess as a distraction from those truly important matters.

The intro of β€œThis is America” is performed by a black choir.  Notably, there’s a hint of tropical, international flavor – clearly an β€˜African’ influence, which seems intentional.  This  lavor is more pronounced on the bridge performed by Gambino.  The tone of the chorus is an about-face from the extended intro/bridge section.  The sound is darker, more pessimistic, and more serious in tone.  Childish Gambino raps, β€œThis is America / Don’t catch you slippin’ up… / Look what I’m whippin’ up…”

The first verse settles into the darker, hip-hop driven sound introduced upon the chorus. Glover is the lead, but there are ad-libs inserted from a variety of rappers.  As aforementioned, Glover makes references to policing in America and gun violence, important issues in the black community. A contrasting refrain, performed by the choir with a response by Glover, embodies the exuberance of the intro with different lyrics: β€œGet your money, black man (get your money).” Once again, the minor key returns on the chorus, followed by the second verse by Gambino.  Here is where the β€˜excess as a distraction’ comes into play. Such excess includes material things, as well as referencing hustling.  Following another refrain that incorporates πŸŽ™ Young Thug for two lines, Thugga provides the outro for this surefire gem.

12. Lady Gaga, β€œBorn This Way”

πŸ’Ώ Born This Way β€’ 🏷 Interscope β€’ πŸ“… 2011

Lady Gaga, Born This Way [πŸ“·: Interscope]β€œI’m beautiful in my way / Cause God makes no mistakes / I’m on the right track, baby /I was born this way…” Years before πŸŽ™ Kesha was β€˜true to self’ on 🎡 β€œMy Own Dance” (πŸ’Ώ High Road), πŸŽ™ Lady Gaga spoke to all of the most unique individual of the world on 🎡 β€œBorn This Way,” the title track from her epic 2011 album. The πŸ† Grammy winner says it best at the top of β€œBorn This Way”: β€œIt doesn’t matter if you love him, or capital H-I-M / Just put your paws up / β€˜Cause you were born this way.”

Ultimately, β€œBorn This Way” is an anthem that celebrates every person being special, regardless of sexual preference or otherwise.  Really, is there much more that needs to be added to describe this surefire bop? This is one hell of a fierce record, years after it was first unveiled to the world.

β€œβ€¦Don’t hide yourself in regret

Just love yourself and you’re set

I’m on the rick track baby

I was born this way.”

13. Morgan Wallen, β€œThis Bar”

πŸ’Ώ Dangerous: The Double Album β€’ 🏷 Big Loud / Republic β€’ πŸ“… 2021

Morgan Wallen, Dangerous: The Double Album [πŸ“· : Big Loud / Republic]β€œThose nights what I would give for one more Bud Light.” On 🎡 β€œThis Bar”, another standout from πŸ’Ώ Dangerous: The Double Album gracing this alcohol-associated list, πŸŽ™ Morgan Wallen continues to be country to the core, for the better on this highlight. Instrumentally, β€œThis Bar” is full-on rhythmic machine, carried by banjo, guitars, and of course, pummeling drums.  Wallen is potent and gritty, continuing to flaunt the twang as he narrativizes the bar.

Like most of Dangerous, he’s emotional and sings with incredible expressiveness. While the alcohol is potent, β€œThis Bar” is indeed more than alcoholic consumption, best exemplified by the catchy chorus:

β€œI found myself in this bar

Making mistakes and making new friends

Us growing up and nothing made sense

Buzzing all night like neon in the dark

I found myself in this.”

14. Kanye West, β€œUse This Gospel”

Ft. Clipse & Kenny G

πŸ’Ώ JESUS IS KING β€’ 🏷 Getting Out Our Dreams / Def Jam β€’ πŸ“… 2019

Kanye West, JESUS IS KING [πŸ“·: Getting Out Our Dreams, II]🎡 β€œUse This Gospel,” the penultimate track from the critically mixed, 2019 πŸŽ™ Kanye West album, πŸ’Ώ JESUS IS KING, ranks among the best of the LP.  While most of JESUS IS KING approaches β€˜gospel’ and religion at a surface level, β€œUse This Gospel” packs a much more respectable punch overall. The production shines thanks to repurposing – sampling and interpolation.  Here, West notably samples πŸŽ™ Two Door Cinema Club (🎡 β€œCostume Party”).

Singing the chorus, he sounds respectable, striking gold with one of the more memorable hooks:

β€œUse this gospel for protection

It’s a hard road to Heaven

We call on your blessings

In the Father, we put our faith

King of the kingdom

Our demons are tremblin’

Holy angels defendin’

In the father, we put our faith.”

West is joined by πŸŽ™ Clipse, with πŸŽ™ Pusha T rapping the first verse, while πŸŽ™ No Malice takes the second.  Maybe most surprising is a 🎷 saxophone solo by the one and only πŸŽ™ Kenny G, which follows No Malice’s verse.  Go figure! Following G’s solo, the groove kicks back in – pretty sick.

15. Natalie Cole, β€œThis Will Be (An Everlasting Love)”

πŸ’Ώ Inseparable β€’ 🏷 Capitol β€’ πŸ“… 1975

Natalie Cole, Inseparable [πŸ“·: Capitol]β€œThis will be an everlasting love / This will be the one I’ve waited for / This will be the first time anyone has loved me, oh, oh, oh.” Oh, what a 🎡 β€œMighty Love” as πŸŽ™ The Spinners would describe it! There can’t be a conversation about the late, great πŸŽ™ Natalie Cole without her β€˜ace in the hole.’  Which of her many hits is her β€˜ace in the hole,’ you ask? Well, from my estimations, it’s the bright, exuberant 🎡 β€œThis Will Be (An Everlasting Love).” Simply put, Natalie flies high on this jazzy, spirited, instantly recognizable soul classic. The excerpted lyrics are ICONIC!

β€œHugging and squeezing

And kissing and pleasing

Together forever through rain or whatever

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah you and me.”

β€œThis Will Be” graces one of Cole’s most important, most notable albums, πŸ’Ώ Inseparable, released in 1975.  Somehow, β€œThis Will Be” is NOT Cole’s highest-peaking single on the pop charts. Regardless, this β€˜THIS’ classic is by far the most decorated song of her illustrious career. It peaked at no. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 – #HIT! Also, Inseparable was a top 20 album. Cole landed a πŸ† Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance for this song, also winning one for Best New Artist of the Year.  Basically, 🎡 β€œThis Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” is one of the greatest songs of all time!
