BIA,
Childish Gambino,
Maren Morris,
Natalie Cole, and
Troye Sivan among others. Just that short list features hip-hop/rap, country, R&B, and pop, so, weβve covered our bases! So, without further ado, please, please, please, check THIS out!!!
1. Maren Morris, βCircles Around This Townβ
βCircles Around This Townβ β’
Sony Music Entertainment β’
2022
Grammy-winning country singer/songwriter
Maren Morris shines on her first single of 2022,
βCircles Around This Townβ. On βCircles,β she co-writes with a talented crew:
Jimmy Robbins,
Julia Michaels, and her husband,
Ryan Hurd. Furthermore, βitβ producer
Greg Kurstin works behind the board.
Vocally, Morris sounds strong on βCircles Around This Town.β Besides being assertive and exhibiting a great tone, she also gives ample personality. She plays to her country fan base, but pop fans will enjoy this one too. Among my favorite lyrics occurs during the second verse: βSo many times, I thought about lΠ΅avinβ / Got my ass kicked tryinβ to compete with / Everybody elseβs ones that got away.β Thematically, Maren reminisces on her βcome upβ β how hard it was to get where she is now moving to Nashville. Even though sheβs made it, she acknowledges sheβs βStill got the pedal down / Drivinβ circles around this town.β Of course, those awesome lyrics hail from the chorus, which is big and memorable.
2. Doja Cat, βBeen Like Thisβ
Planet Her β’
Kemosabe / RCA β’
2021
βWho is frontinβ, babe? / We donβt have fun these days / Itβs more than complicated.β Uh-oh β sounds like trouble in paradise,
Doja Cat!
βBeen Like Thisβ features the gift of pitch shift on the intro vocals performed by
Bryson Tiller. This intro sets the tone and provides contrast to Doja.
βSince youβve been like this
Baby, I donβt really wanna be in like this
Ever since youβve been like this
Baby, I donβt really wanna be in like this.β
Tillerβs intro eventually reappears as the chorus, performed by Doja, of course. When the Grammy-nominated pop artist enters the mix, she brings ample firepower. The balance between singing and rapping continues to be one of the selling points of
Planet Her as a whole. One specific selling point on βBeen Like Thisβ is the sweet upper register Dlamini exhibits toward the end.

3. Maxwell, βThis Womanβs Workβ
Now β’
Columbia β’
2001
βI should be crying but I just canβt let it show / I should be hoping but I canβt stop thinking / All the things we shouldβve said that I never saidβ¦β Iβm biased, but
Grammy-winning R&B singer/songwriter
Maxwell is one of the best R&B artists in the game. His voice β that pure falsetto β just does something to you when you listen. Even though he rarely releases new music, the Haitian-Puerto Rican American singer has solidified his legacy with his brilliant work in the past. Specifically, his third studio album
Now, released at the height of the neo-soul era in 2001, features the crème de la crème of his career. That, my friends, includes
βThis Womanβs Work.β
Just in case you werenβt aware, βThis Womanβs Workβ is actually a cover β insert totally shook, *shocked gasps* here. Thatβs he covers the gorgeous
Kate Bush gem from her 1989 album,
The Sensual World. As is the mark of a truly gifted musician, he makes this cover sound as if the song were his own original. I have no doubt Bush co-signs his magnificent R&B take, which provides her even greater accolades as a singer/songwriter.
βGive me these moments
Give them back to me
Give me that little kiss
Give me your talking hands.β

4. Maroon 5, βThis Summerβ
V β’
Interscope β’
2015
βHer bodyβs like the summer / Iβm in a trance or something / Her mind is not, no / As sharp as all her diamonds.β Following a reissue of their album
V,
Maroon 5 gave us the ultimate guilty pleasure to make summer even better β
βThis Summerβ. Originally, the full, expletive bearing title was what naturally made the song shocking: βThis Summerβs Gonna Hurt Like a Motherfucker.β
βThis summerβs gonna hurt like a motherfucker
Fucker
This summerβs gonna hurt like a motherfucker
Fucker.β
While the full titular lyric is ear-catching thanks to the MF-bomb, ultimately, βThis Summerβ is simply a relatively fun, big ole pop single. No, it wonβt supplant their classics, but this frank cut lacking depth is catchy as bleep! Essentially, Adam Levine sings about a hot girl whose hotness is her sole virtue. In other words, her flaws eclipse the looks.
βI see her dancing on a fool
Like sheβs seventeen and cool
She really thinks that she can move
But itβs just nasty
I see her when I go to sleep
I check my phone when I am weak
She never posts anything deep
βCause sheβs so fancy.β
Yup, βThis summerβs gonna hurtβ indeed!

5. BIA, βCanβt Touch Thisβ
For Certain β’
Epic β’
2021
βMy milkshake brings all the boys to the yard / And theyβre like, itβs better than yours / Damn right, itβs better than yours / I can teach you, but I have to charge.β Does anybody remember this aughts classic? Well, if not, let me fill you in! Itβs
βMilkshakeβ by
Kelis. Why do I mention this R&B song when Iβm supposed to write about the
BIA βthisβ song,
βCanβt Touch Thisβ (
For Certain, 2021)? Well, BIA sampled the aughts gem in βCanβt Touch This,β featuring that stellar production by
The Neptunes
Besides sampling βMilkshake,β BIA also lifts off the chorus, tweaking it to her liking in the second verse: βMy milkshake brings all the boys to the yard (Oh) / in the foreign cars / And theyβre like, itβs better than yours / Damn right, itβs better than yours.β Woo! Itβs not all borrowing though! BIA brings ample personality in the verses and of course, the centerpiece, the chorus. Over banging production by IRoccOnTheBeat,
London Jae, and
DJ Young Pharaoh, she spits:
βNo stylist, I donβt do repeats
I got money, bitch, Iβm knee-deep
All hunnids, drippinβ in CC
Might pop that pussy like FreakNik
No mileage, boy, you canβt touch this
No bodies, boy, you ainβt fuck shit
Iβm on islands, whippinβ them Porsches (Skrr)
Run shit, and your nigga endorse it (Sheesh).β
Woo! BIA doesnβt play around in the least! βCanβt Touch Thisβ BE-OTCHES!
6. Troye Sivan, βDance to Thisβ
Ft. Ariana Grande
Bloom β’
Universal Music Australia Pty Ltd. β’
2018
βWe can just dance to this / Donβt take much to start me / We can just dance to this / Push up on my body, yeah.β
βDance to Thisβ has a sexy, danceable backdrop and overall sound. The record possesses an incredible smoothness with its consistent, driving rhythm, subtle pad, and guitar lead on the chorus. In addition to the core sound, there are some other unique production touches, notably the β80s nostalgiaβ that arrives with the boxy drums of the bridge. Enough about the production, letβs focus on the stars from his
Bloom standout, shall we?
Troye Sivan blesses the track with super smooth vocals on the first verse. He does an excellent job of showing his flexibility. He sings in both his low/mid-register as well as giving us a taste of his lighter, upper register.
Grammy winner
Ariana Grande arrives in the second verse, showcasing the sheer beauty, richness, and robustness of her instrument. Superb vocal chemistry between Sivan and Grande is the story on the second chorus. βDance to Thisβ is a thrilling, well-rounded single and great performance by Sivan and Grande. These two artists make an awesome musical pair to say the least.

7. Vampire Weekend, βThis Lifeβ
Father of the Bride β’
Sony β’
2019
In 2019,
Grammy-winning alternative collective
Vampire Weekend returned with an alluring, consistent, and well-rounded fourth studio album,
Father of the Bride. There was no shortage of highlights, and honestly, I wasnβt the east bit surprised that the album was a contender for the highly coveted Album of the Year. Perhaps
βThis Lifeβ isnβt the first bop from Father of the Bride that comes to mind (Looking at you
βHarmony Hallβ and
β2021β), yet itβs pretty sweet.
The thrilling βThis Lifeβ thrives off its major-key, optimistic sound. Even more alluring are the lyrics and themes. So, what do you cover Ezra Koenig? Do you actually βgive a fuck about an Oxford Commaβ, now, haha (couldnβt resist, sorry). In all seriousness, βThis Lifeβ includes literal, mutual relationship issues (βIβve been cheating on, cheating on youβ), war (βI just thought the drums of war beat louder warningsβ), and existential matters (βBaby, I know death probably hasnβt happened yet / βCause I donβt remember living life before thisβ). βThis Lifeβ β a THIS song that is certainly centered on life!

8. Jeremy Zucker & Chelsea Cutler, βthis is how you fall in loveβ
brent ii β’
Republic β’
2021
βThis is how you fall in love / Let go and Iβll hold you up.β Aww, what better subject matter than love for a pop duet? Continue with that excerpt, please! βSo, pull me tight and close your eyes / Oh, my love, side to sideβ Ah β chorus that exemplifies sheer perfection to the nth degree! On
βthis is how you fall in loveβ from
brent ii,
Jeremy Zucker and
Chelsea Cutler join forces delivering a radiant song all about L-O-V-E. The chemistry between the two is superb, while separately, they sound sweet as well. Zucker and Cutler both wrote and produced this sub-three-minute gem.
On βthis is how you fall in love,β Zucker delivers a gorgeous vocal performance; his tone is impeccable. He sings with incredible authenticity; he sounds expressive, nuanced, and tender. One of his best moments is incredibly subtle, when he sings βOhβ on the pre-chorus (it recurs post-second verse). The same praise can be bestowed upon Cutler, who appears on the second verse. Notably, she has an expanded sound palette accompanying her, as well as getting a lift via layered vocals. Cutlerβs second verse serves as the transition to loftier heights for βthis is how you fall in love.β Even as the record ascends to a fever pitch, Zucker and Cutlerβs βduet sectionβ intentionally brings things back down β a great thoughtful touch. βThis is how you fall in loveβ possesses both a degree of simplicity as well as a degree of utter satisfaction.

9. Marteen, βThis Shit Suxβ
8 β’
New Mogul / EMPIRE β’
2019
βAye / I guess that he meant more than meβ¦β Sigh, matters of the heart have R&B singer/songwriter
Marteen all messed up. Loveβll do that shit β just saying! The Berkley-born standout βkeeps it 100β when it comes to being heartbroken on the short, sweet, and pained single,
βThis Shit Suxβ (
8, 2019). The production is lush and smooth. The backdrop is the perfect fuel for Marteen to reminisce back on love, the hardships of love, and his present disgust.
Following the short first verse (excerpted above), he drops the reminiscent pre-chorus on the listeners:
βI know we had our off days
I thought that we were always
Remember you would say you were gonna change
But it was hard to fake.β
Expectedly, he drops the βs-bombβ on the memorable chorus. Sure, thereβs not much deep about a line like βThis shit sucksβ or even its supporting lines, but Marteen perfectly paints the state of his mind and heart. Furthermore, everyone can relate to the profane, βpoopyβ titular lyric. All in all, Marteen drops a respectable, well-executed heartbreak record. He doesnβt reinvent pain, specifically the struggle of love, but he totally sells the plight heβs experiencing. Vocally, his youthful pipes are refreshing, and the production work provides him with a lift. Safe to say, nothing βsuxβ about this record in the least, or the talented Marteen himself.

10. Kehlani, βNights Like Thisβ
Ft. Ty Dolla $ign
While We Wait β’
Atlantic β’
2019
βBut all that glitters isnβt gold, I was blinded / Should have never gave you my heart on consignment.β
Grammy-nominated R&B singer
Kehlani gets the assist from the ever-ubiquitous
Ty Dolla $ign on
βNights Like Thisβ, the crown jewel of her 2019 mixtape,
While We Wait. While βNights Like Thisβ ends up being more underrated than it ever should be, thereβs plenty to sink your teeth into the night-centric track.
Kehlaniβs tone and overall performance are a massive selling point. In addition to a sensational, nuanced vocal, βNights Like Thisβ benefits from its production work, idiomatic of a modern R&B record, yet also featuring classic cues from the 90s and 00s. Adding to the excellence is respectable songwriting this is relatable. The pre-chorus and chorus sections are among the highlights. All in all, she excels on βNights Like This.β

11. Childish Gambino, βThis Is Americaβ
βThis Is Americaβ β’
mcDJ Recording / RCA β’
2018
Childish Gambino (
Donald Glover) returned with a bang in 2018 with single
βThis is Americaβ. While the lyrical approach is simple on this record, the socially-conscious message that Glover makes is pitch-perfect β relevant to the times. Throughout the course of this
Grammy-winning record, Glover references policing in America and gun violence, important issues in the black community, as well as focusing on excess as a distraction from those truly important matters.
The intro of βThis is Americaβ is performed by a black choir. Notably, thereβs a hint of tropical, international flavor β clearly an βAfricanβ influence, which seems intentional. This lavor is more pronounced on the bridge performed by Gambino. The tone of the chorus is an about-face from the extended intro/bridge section. The sound is darker, more pessimistic, and more serious in tone. Childish Gambino raps, βThis is America / Donβt catch you slippinβ upβ¦ / Look what Iβm whippinβ upβ¦β
The first verse settles into the darker, hip-hop driven sound introduced upon the chorus. Glover is the lead, but there are ad-libs inserted from a variety of rappers. As aforementioned, Glover makes references to policing in America and gun violence, important issues in the black community. A contrasting refrain, performed by the choir with a response by Glover, embodies the exuberance of the intro with different lyrics: βGet your money, black man (get your money).β Once again, the minor key returns on the chorus, followed by the second verse by Gambino. Here is where the βexcess as a distractionβ comes into play. Such excess includes material things, as well as referencing hustling. Following another refrain that incorporates Young Thug for two lines, Thugga provides the outro for this surefire gem.

12. Lady Gaga, βBorn This Wayβ
Born This Way β’
Interscope β’
2011
βIβm beautiful in my way / Cause God makes no mistakes / Iβm on the right track, baby /I was born this wayβ¦β Years before
Kesha was βtrue to selfβ on
βMy Own Danceβ (
High Road),
Lady Gaga spoke to all of the most unique individual of the world on
βBorn This Way,β the title track from her epic 2011 album. The
Grammy winner says it best at the top of βBorn This Wayβ: βIt doesnβt matter if you love him, or capital H-I-M / Just put your paws up / βCause you were born this way.β
Ultimately, βBorn This Wayβ is an anthem that celebrates every person being special, regardless of sexual preference or otherwise. Really, is there much more that needs to be added to describe this surefire bop? This is one hell of a fierce record, years after it was first unveiled to the world.
ββ¦Donβt hide yourself in regret
Just love yourself and youβre set
Iβm on the rick track baby
I was born this way.β

13. Morgan Wallen, βThis Barβ
Dangerous: The Double Album β’
Big Loud / Republic β’
2021
βThose nights what I would give for one more Bud Light.β On
βThis Barβ, another standout from
Dangerous: The Double Album gracing this alcohol-associated list,
Morgan Wallen continues to be country to the core, for the better on this highlight. Instrumentally, βThis Barβ is full-on rhythmic machine, carried by banjo, guitars, and of course, pummeling drums. Wallen is potent and gritty, continuing to flaunt the twang as he narrativizes the bar.
Like most of Dangerous, heβs emotional and sings with incredible expressiveness. While the alcohol is potent, βThis Barβ is indeed more than alcoholic consumption, best exemplified by the catchy chorus:
βI found myself in this bar
Making mistakes and making new friends
Us growing up and nothing made sense
Buzzing all night like neon in the dark
I found myself in this.β

14. Kanye West, βUse This Gospelβ
Ft. Clipse & Kenny G
JESUS IS KING β’
Getting Out Our Dreams / Def Jam β’
2019
βUse This Gospel,β the penultimate track from the critically mixed, 2019
Kanye West album,
JESUS IS KING, ranks among the best of the LP. While most of JESUS IS KING approaches βgospelβ and religion at a surface level, βUse This Gospelβ packs a much more respectable punch overall. The production shines thanks to repurposing β sampling and interpolation. Here, West notably samples
Two Door Cinema Club (
βCostume Partyβ).
Singing the chorus, he sounds respectable, striking gold with one of the more memorable hooks:
βUse this gospel for protection
Itβs a hard road to Heaven
We call on your blessings
In the Father, we put our faith
King of the kingdom
Our demons are tremblinβ
Holy angels defendinβ
In the father, we put our faith.β
West is joined by Clipse, with
Pusha T rapping the first verse, while
No Malice takes the second. Maybe most surprising is a
saxophone solo by the one and only
Kenny G, which follows No Maliceβs verse. Go figure! Following Gβs solo, the groove kicks back in β pretty sick.

Inseparable β’
Capitol β’
1975
βThis will be an everlasting love / This will be the one Iβve waited for / This will be the first time anyone has loved me, oh, oh, oh.β Oh, what a
βMighty Loveβ as
The Spinners would describe it! There canβt be a conversation about the late, great
Natalie Cole without her βace in the hole.β Which of her many hits is her βace in the hole,β you ask? Well, from my estimations, itβs the bright, exuberant
βThis Will Be (An Everlasting Love).β Simply put, Natalie flies high on this jazzy, spirited, instantly recognizable soul classic. The excerpted lyrics are ICONIC!
βHugging and squeezing
And kissing and pleasing
Together forever through rain or whatever
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah you and me.β
βThis Will Beβ graces one of Coleβs most important, most notable albums, Inseparable, released in 1975. Somehow, βThis Will Beβ is NOT Coleβs highest-peaking single on the pop charts. Regardless, this βTHISβ classic is by far the most decorated song of her illustrious career. It peaked at no. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 β #HIT! Also, Inseparable was a top 20 album. Cole landed a
Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance for this song, also winning one for Best New Artist of the Year. Basically,
βThis Will Be (An Everlasting Love)β is one of the greatest songs of all time!
