13 Scrumptious Songs About Candy & Dessert 🎧 [Photo Credits: Brent Faulkner, The Musical Hype, Pexels, Pixabay, Unsplash]‘13 Scrumptious Songs About Candy & Dessert’ features music by BAEKHYUN, JoJo, Lady Gaga, Melanie Martinez, and Trey Songz.

Time to Eat – Dinner is Served! is a 25-song, conceptual playlist, all about food (on the surface), that is divided into five distinct sections. Okay, what does that have to do with the playlist at hand, 13 SCRUMPTIOUS SONGS ABOUT CANDY & DESSERT? Good question – I’ll explain.  You see, the fifth section of Time to Eat – Dinner is Served!, DESSERTS, is actually the source of ~46% of this list, or six songs.  One song that hails directly from the list is “Sour Candy” 🍬 🍬 🍬 by Lady Gaga & BLACKPINK.

Of course, that means, that seven out of the 13 SCRUMPTIOUS SONGS ABOUT CANDY & DESSERT didn’t appear on Time to Eat – Dinner is Served!  The criteria for this playlist is simple.  The songs have to reference candy, treats, or some sort of dessert (cake, cookies, pies, etc.). With a bit of background behind us, 13 SCRUMPTIOUS SONGS ABOUT CANDY & DESSERT features music by a diverse slate of artists including BAEKHYUN, JoJo, Lady Gaga (with BLACKPINK, of course), Melanie Martinez, and Trey Songz among others.  Without further ado, get that sweet tooth ready to sink into these decadent treats!

1. Lady Gaga & BLACKPINK, “Sour Candy” 🍬 🍬 🍬

Chromatica • Interscope • 2020

Lady Gaga, Chromatica [Photo Credit: Interscope]“I’m sour candy / So sweet, then I get a little angry, yeah /Sour candy, yeah, yeah, yeah…” “Sour Candy” 🍬 🍬 🍬 commences 13 SCRUMPTIOUS SONGS ABOUT CANDY & DESSERT courtesy of Lady Gaga and South Korean girl group, BLACKPINK.  The standout appears on Chromatica, the sixth studio album by the Academy- and Grammy award winning musician.  Chromatica is dessert in its own right, marking Lady Gaga’s best album since Born This Way (2011).

“I’m hard on the outside / But if you give me the time / Then I could make time for your love / I’m hard on the outside / But if you see inside, inside, inside…” “Sour Candy” yields positive results – nothing sour in the least! Why is it such a success? Light in calories it may be compared to cookies, cakes, or pies, it’s still rich in sugar given the outlandish nature and artistry of Gaga, the personality exhibited by BLACKPINK, the millionth catchy chorus of the album itself, and superb production.  BloodPop® and BURNS do a fine job constructing this ‘sweet,’ modern, electro-pop banger.

“Come, come, unwrap me
I’ll show you what’s me
Close your eyes, don’t peek
Now, I’m undressing
Unwrap sour candy.”

OF course, the lyrics, as aforementioned are quite playful.  There’s clearly some sexual innuendo in play, but neither Lady Gaga nor BLACKPINK take things too far.  Ultimately, “Sour Candy” is incredibly fun.  “Sour Candy” previously appeared as one of the six desserts on the conceptual food playlist, Time to Eat – Dinner is Served!.

2. Melanie Martinez, “Strawberry Shortcake” 🍰

K-12 • Atlantic • 2019

Melanie Martinez, K-12 [Photo Credit: Atlantic]Melanie Martinez was among the most compelling contestants on NBC’s vocal competition, The Voice.  While The Voice itself hasn’t catapulted many of its alumni into big-time success, Martinez has achieved her fair share of success. Quite a quirky, alternative individual, it paid dividends on her 2015 major label debut, Cry Baby. Four years later, she returned with another distinct, conceptual affair with her ‘school-centric’ sophomore album, K-12.  Cry Baby, the central character on Cry Baby, returned on K-12, which is notably accompanied by a 90+ minute film.  Sweetening up 13 SCRUMPTIOUS SONGS ABOUT CANDY & DESSERT is “Strawberry Shortcake” 🍰 .  Mmm, yummy!

“Instead of making me feel bad for the body I got / Just teach him to keep it in his pants and tell him to stop.” On-point to the nth degree, “Strawberry Shortcake” continues the excellence of K-12, tackling the unfair objectification of women.  “Sayin’ it’s my fault, it’s my fault ‘cause I put icing on top,” Martinez sings on the catchy, thought-provoking chorus, continuing, “Now, the boys want a taste of the strawberry shortcake.” “Strawberry Shortcake” sends the message of treating women with respect, not as sexual objects.

3. BAEKHYUN, “Candy” 🍬🍬🍬

Delight The 2nd Mini Album • SM Entertainment • 2020

Baekhyun, Delight - 2nd Mini Album [Photo Credit: SM Entertainment]Who is BAEKHYUN, you ask? Well, if you’re less woke regarding the K-pop world than most, let me fill you in.  BAEKHYUN is a member of K-Pop-Chinese boy group, EXO, as well as a member of South Korean supergroup, SuperM.  FYI, I reviewed SuperM – The 1st Mini Album back in 2019.  Of course, given his appearance here, he’s also a solo artist.  BAEKHYUN makes 13 SCRUMPTIOUS SONGS ABOUT CANDY & DESSERT thanks to “Candy” 🍬 🍬 🍬 , the opening song from his second EP, Delight The 2nd Mini Album.

“Candy” exemplifies the K-Pop sound. The production is incredibly fresh and quite sleek; it incorporates elements of pop, R&B, and electronic. Vocally, BAEKHYUN sings beautifully, never underwhelming nor over singing.  It’s particularly sweet when he dips into his falsetto, which is a staple of American pop and R&B music.  Though the lyrics are in Korean, the gist of the song is that BAEKHYUN likens love to candy.  Translations can be imperfect, but the sexy vibes given off by listening and reading through the lyrics are indisputable.  The chorus, the most catchy, memorable section of the song exudes sexiness:

“Girl, I’m your candy
Special chemistry
Mature cinnamon
Dorky mint
What else do you want?
Got me feeling like pop rocks, strawberry, bubblegum
When my pocket is full of scent
All I want is you my love
Candy
You will feel better
Tell me what you’re waiting for.”

4. Weezer, “Piece of Cake” 🍰

Weezer (Black Album) • Atlantic • 2019

Weezer, Weezer (Black Album) [Photo Credit: Atlantic]Being a rock band in the late 10s can be challenging. Why? Well, rock’s relevance in the mainstream has been quite arduous to come by.  Rock bands are sometimes forced to shake up the formula and ‘sell out’ in order to sell records. Weezer is one of those bands that have been criticized given their assimilation ‘to the times’ you might say. While there have been and are several arguments to be made that the alternative collective is well past their prime, Rivers Cuomo and company do deserve credit for continuing to hustle, even with some assimilation involved. Ultimately their second album of 2019, Weezer (Black Album) has its fair share of memorable and respectable moments.  It may not be perfect, but there are some gems to be found. Hey, being a rock star just isn’t a “Piece of Cake” 🍰  after all.

“She cut me like a piece of cake / She cut me like a piece of cake / Hope can drive a man insane / She ate me up.” Well, it could be worst Weezer – like Armin Meiwes style and the Bloodbath song, “Eaten” … Anyways, “Piece of Cake” embraces retro-pop and rock, reminiscent of The Beatles or some of Sir Paul McCartney’s eclectic solo material.  The record is easy on the ears, finding Rivers Cuomo continuing to be quite effective vocally, even if the lyrics aren’t particularly positive (“Let’s do hard drugs / Fix our problems / Let me swing by / Tears in my eyes”).  No, the wheel isn’t reinvented, but “Piece of Cake” is as pleasant – well, almost as pleasant – as a ‘piece of cake.’

5. Todrick Hall, “Cake Pop” 🎂 🍭

Haus Party, Pt. 2 • Todrick Hall • 2019

Todrick Hall, Haus Party, Part Two [Photo Credit: Todrick Hall]“There’s a whole lotta cake / That’s a whole lotta bubble / That’s a whole lotta trouble / That’s a whole lotta bootay, bootay.” “Cake Pop”  🎂 🍭  has nothing to do with the delicious mini cake on a stick that resembles a lollipop, yet, here it is on this candy/dessert list in all its sexed-up glory.  Todrick Hall may not deliver a tasty dessert on the Haus Party, Pt. 2 joint, but at least we get a pretty infectious, booty-savvy LGBTQ+ anthem out of it, right? #Slay

“Cake Pop” is fierce from the jump. Even the repetitive intro suggests ‘it’s about to go down.’ On the first verse, Todrick goes in, asserting:

“Every time they play this song
These cheeks start clapping on they own
My back start breaking
My weave start shaking
And my panties turn into a thong...”

Oh snap! On the pre-chorus, we are informed, “These cakes were made for twerking / And that’s just what they’ll do.” That of course, flips the Nancy Sinatra classic, “These Boots are Made for Walkin’”.  That said, I highly doubt Sinatra would be into/promote twerking – just saying! On the post-chorus, we get the bulk of that “cake pop” action. On the second verse, we get plenty of ‘ass’ – literally – the word is featured seven times.  But for all its overtness, “Cake Pop” is fun AF.  I’ll leave you with a portion of the bridge:

“They don’t even know what a cake pop is
Tell the barista he can cake pop this
The cakes don’t stop until the cake pop fizz
And you get that A plus on the cake pop quiz
Make it pop, pop, pop...
Make it wobble till it can’t wobble no mo’...”

Yeah, I can’t see Nancy Sinatra being ‘bout this life…

6. Future, “PIE” 🥧

Ft. Chris Brown

HNDRXX • Epic • 2017

Future, HNDRXX © EpicFuture and Chris Brown. Yep, that’s two good ones together.  The two collaborate on “PIE” 🥧 ,  which can now be found as the 18th track on Future’s second album of 2017, HNDRXX.  If you were expecting sweetness by way of taste, well, you’ll be sadly disappointed. The resulting song is one that is quite sexual and drenched in vocal effects. “PIE” is certainly enjoyable but let’s be clear, Future and Chris Brown are definitely more American Pie in mindset – think that infamous apple pie scene.

The chorus is incredibly catchy, if utterly tasteless:

“I turn the side piece to a 9 piece
She out lying it shouldn’t even matter, she mine
I told her baby, fuck it up, one time
Ba-baby, fuck it up one time.”

The M.O. is sex, sex, sex… Brown takes the first verse, spitting mad game, referencing sex, drugs, and money.  He remains true to his bad boy persona, never breaking character.

“Baby, fuck it up
It’s your birthday, go ‘head, put that cake on me…
I’ve been leanin’ all day, I’m faded
And she been feignin’ all day but can’t take dick.”

Future keeps his “eye on the prize” throughout his verse and respective contributions as well.

“Gassing up on lean and good Percs
Lap dance getting pie on my t-shirt
She know how to fuck, yeah
She ain’t looking for true love here.”

For Future, it’s all excess.  Meaningless sex, drugs providing a high, and no sense of permanence or transcendence.  Examined sans judgement or moral compass, “PIE” is a hit. Truly, everybody loves pie – all kinds of pies.  But the messaging is, well, shameful.  “PIE” previously appeared as one of the six desserts on the conceptual food playlist, Time to Eat – Dinner is Served!.

7. JoJo, “Edibles.”  🍪 💨

Mad Love. • Atlantic • 2016

JoJo, Mad Love. © AtlanticAh, “Edibles.” 🍪 💨 –  sounds delicious! “If you wanna come eat edibles…” Sigh, if only the word edible simply meant what it’s supposed to mean: “fit to be eaten”. Alas, there’s a reason why an edible isn’t a regular old cookie.  Question: “Does somebody’s cookie got you leaning?” More on that later.  Anyways, there’s a reason why “Edibles.” from Mad Love., the comeback album by JoJo previously graced The High is Real on These 13 ‘High-Flying’ Anthems. With the age of innocence long gone, an edible is “any edible product that contains THC.”  By the way, THC is tetrahydrocannabinol.

Indeed, “Edibles” encompasses a high far behind the joys of chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, or peanut butter cookies. It also encompasses sex:

“Do some freaky shit, incredible
I’m your girl, I’m your girl...”

Cat Explode GIF [gif credit: Mobius]

Backtracking to the line where JoJo references “leaning,” not only is the guy she addresses high off of weed, but also her, um… cookie… The weed references, coupled with sex, are amplified on the bridge:

“Green candies melting us together
I feel higher up than Fenway Park
Is it your fingers giving tingles or this?
Hydroponic daily spark?
Meet me in the dark
I need you here 10 PM sharp.”

Again, not your normal brownies or cookies folks, if you are completely naïve of the cannabis world, though a number of musicians – hip-hop artists in particular – can definitely educate you.  A year prior to “Edibles.,” Snoop Dogg recorded his own song, “Edibles”, assisted by T.I. Apparently, he has a line of marijuana goods

8. DNCE, “Cake by the Ocean” 🎂  🌊

DNCE • Republic • 2016

DNCE © Republic“God damn / See you licking frosting from your own hand / Want another taste, I’m begging, yes ma’am / I’m tired of all this candy on the dry land, dry land.” Frosting, huh?  Is that what they call it these days? “Cake by the Ocean” arrives courtesy of the Joe Jonas-led pop collective, DNCE.  Breakout hit “Cake by the Oceanis among the most entertaining, fun, and carefree songs of the 00s.

Even so, the fun served up on “Cake by the Ocean” is fueled by mad innuendo.  Can you say sex? Safe to say, the metaphor is extended on “Cake.” At one point, Jonas describes her as being “fucking delicious” in an ad-lib.  The same sentiment could be said about “Cake by the Ocean” – it’s a truly infectious, highly suggestive gem.

“Talk to me, baby
I’m going blind from this sweet, sweet craving, whoa-oh
Let’s lose our minds and go fucking crazy
Ah ya ya ya ya I
Keep on hopin’ we’ll eat cake by the ocean.”

“Cake by the Ocean” has previously graced Mad Innuendo, 2015 and Beyond, 13 Songs That Reference Water, Vol. 1, and Time to Eat – Dinner is Served!.

9. Trey Songz, “Cake” 🎂

Trigga Reloaded • Atlantic • 2015

Trey Songz, Trigga © Atlantic“They say all I talk about is sex.” While Trey Songz definitely surprised me when he released the ‘uncharacteristic’ “2020 Riots: How Many Times” (13 Powerful Songs Where Black Lives DO Indeed Matter), more often than not, we associate the R&B singer with sex, just as he asserts on the intro from “Unusual” from his 2010 album, Passion, Pain & Pleasure.  Here, associating him with sex on “Cake,” from his 2015 album, Trigga Reloaded, is spot-on: “Cake’s-cake’s-cake’s on the menu…”

Before we actually get to the emphasis on the cake, Trey sings the following on the chorus:

“Baby, this might sound rude
I’m taken but I want you
And I don’t wanna play by the book, no rules
They say you can’t have cake and it too
But ain’t that what you s’posed to do?”

Oh boy! Trigga, which was originally released in 2014, is stacked full of libidinous greatness, if that’s how you want to describe it.  Perhaps to some, the perception is that “Cake” and Trigga overall are prime examples of plain old offensive, oversexed R&B.  “Cake” definitely kicks the original album off naughtily, while it appears as the third track on Trigga Reloaded.  Ultimately, it serves as one of the albums triumphs. I’d argue that the second verse is the ripest:

“Light-skinned girls got that red velvet
Dark-skinned girls, chocolate
White girls got vanilla frosting
Cake tastes great, I love all of it
I’ve got a sweet tooth and it’s just for you...”

10. R. Kelly, “Cookie” 🍪

Black Panties • RCA • 2013

R. Kelly, Black Panties [Photo Credit: RCA]“You wonder how I’m the best and can do all this with my mouth? /…My bed can be your stage / And I’mma make you a star / Your legs in the air and my hands all up in your cookie jar.” Moments like “Cookie” 🍪  certainly provide further fuel to the fire as to why R. Kelly has been muted, damning sexual abuse allegations or not. After hearing “Cookie,” mark my words – you’ll never think of Oreos the same. No, they will never ever be the innocent, decadent cookies because the self-proclaimed ‘sex genius’ ruined it for everybody. They’ve become a sexual, representation of the lustfulness of R. Kelly. He even goes so far that he screws up an innocent childhood character – Cookie Monster from Sesame Street: “Cookie, cookie, cookie, I’m a cookie monster.”

Holy 💩, R – not cookie monster bruh! Take your pick of naughtiness, but it all seems to come back to genitals, honestly.

“Mmm, like an Oreo
I love to lick the middle like an Oreo
Oreo, Oreo, like an Oreo
I wanna bite it and get inside it (‘til I get you gone).”

“Cookie” appears on the 2013 album Black Panties, which features multiple instance of Kelly’s overindulgence into sex. The opening song, “Legs Shakin’” (featuring Ludacris), references cunnilingus…. ‘course, so does “Cookie,” sigh.  Shamefully, “Cookie” has appeared on multiple  playlists: 15 Songs That Focus on Private Matters; 11 Songs Where It Gets Steamy II; 12 Songs Where R. Kelly Took Innuendo Too Far; 20 Songs All About ‘Doin’ It’; Time to Eat – Dinner is Served!.

11. The 1975, “Chocolate” 🍫 💨

The 1975 • Polydor • 2013

The 1975, The 1975 [Photo Credit: Interscope]“Now we run, run away from the boys in the blue / And my car smells like chocolate.” Chocolate in the context of the song “Chocolate”  🍫 💨  isn’t referring to M&Ms, Snickers, or any other candy bar.  No, in the hands of Matt Healy and The 1975, the band is referring to Mary Jane.  In the aforementioned line, Healy has been smoking in the car, and is running away from the police (“boys in the blue”).

Healy goes on to sing from the The High is Real on These 13 ‘High-Flying’ Anthems standout:

“Hey now we’re building up speed as we’re approaching the hill
Oh my hair smells like chocolate
Hey now you say you’re gonna quit it
But you’re never gonna quit it.”

Essentially, the smoking in the car continues, with the distinct smell in his hair, and despite saying he’s going to stop, he’s not really ever going to quit.

“Now you’re never gonna quit it
If you don’t stop smoking it
That’s what she said.”

Hmm, definitely a different sort of dessert to say the least!

12. Rihanna, “Birthday Cake” 🎂

Talk That Talk • Def Jam • 2011

Rihanna, Talk That Talk [Photo Credit: Def Jam]Ah, we close things out with birthday cake, although, we know that Rihanna definitely isn’t referencing the delicious dessert that is a tradition at many birthday parties on “Birthday Cake” 🎂.  No, Rihanna’s “Birthday Cake” is all about what’s going down in the bedroom.  Sex, sex, and more sex.  The case(s) in point – “Come and put your name on it,” “But he wanna lick the icing off,” and “I know you want to bite this.”  Even though the song had little to do with a traditional birthday party, we included the song on 15 Must-Hear Songs to Celebrate Your Birthday.  And let’s keep it real, many would enjoy what Ri-Ri is serving up on “Birthday Cake.”

To reiterate, in no way, shape, or form is Rihanna talking about actual birthday cake – period! Yes, it’s customary to decorate birthday cake by ‘putting your name on it,’ but when Rihanna sings the line, she isn’t talking about icing… How does anyone who may be the slightest bit naïve of sexual innuendo and double entendre get this? Rihanna helps us out: “It’s not even my birthday / But he wanna lick the icing off…” Come on! – No pun intended.  Throughout the course of about one-minute-and-twenty-seconds, also featured on 15 Colorful Songs, Approximately Two Minutes or Less and the conceptual Time to Eat – Dinner is Served!, Rihanna amplifies ‘S meets E, and then they X’ really, REALLY, loudly.  This Talk That Talk gem literally screams orgasm.

13. Lil Wayne, “Lollipop” 🍭

Ft. Static Major

Tha Carter III • Cash Money • 2008

Lil Wayne, Tha Carter III [Photo Credit: Cash Money]“I said, he’s so sweet, make her wanna lick the wrapper / So I let her lick the rapper.” Despite its age (more than a decade old), former no. 1 Billboard Hot hit, “Lollipop”  🍭  remains potent.  Lil Wayne had a tremendous year in 2008 with his awesome, Grammy-winning LP, Tha Carter IIIThe album was jam-packed with hit after hit, with “Lollipop” leading the charge. Sadly, this was a posthumous release for Kentucky rapper, singer, producer, and songwriter Static Major, who died at age 33, two weeks before the record was released.  As a lifelong Kentuckian, it’s always awesome when you see a musician from state appear on a record as big as “Lollipop” was.

Of course, while a “Lollipop” is light dessert at best (I don’t consider it dessert, but to each his own), it’s certainly a richer, more decadent sweet in the hands of Lil Wayne. Weezy is what makes “Lollipop” so steamy, as he’s sexed TF up.  He certainly isn’t talking about ladies licking candy, but rather his ‘Lil Wayne’ – or perhaps big ‘Lil Wayne’ – okay, TMI… “Lollipop” is one of the catchiest rap songs about sex that you’ll ever hear. Static Major is responsible for the timeless hook:

“Shawty want a thug
Bottles in the club
Shawty wanna hump
You know I love to touch ya lovely lady lumps.”
