1. Lil Durk, “Sad Songs”

💿 Almost Healed 🏷 Alamo / Sony • 🗓 2023

Lil Durk, Almost Healed [📷: Alamo]“This ain’t gangster shit in my headphones, this a sad song.” Now that is a lyric right there.  Chicago rapper 🎙 Lil Durk is filled with emotions on 🎵 “Sad Songs,” a highlight from his 2023 album, 💿 Almost Healed.  Backed by emotional production courtesy of 🎛 TouchofTrent and Haze, Durk keeps it honest and real, showing his vulnerability.  Notably, he gets an assist from 🎙 Booka600 in the pre-chorus and chorus sections, which is, um, ear catching to say the least.  Of course, the focus is on Durk, who doesn’t disappoint with numerous one-liners.  In the first verse, he melodically raps, “Ever since we had car sex, she don’t ever wanna wear panties.” Holy shit! He adds, “I was hard for so long, asked did I pop Viagra.” While the sexual context is clever, in this instance, Durk is referring to his feelings, which is refreshing.  Still, more memorable than car sex and Viagra emotions is what he spits in the second verse: “Better think about your life insurance before you tell your friends that you through with me.” Woo!

2. Phoebe Bridgers, “Moon Song”

💿 Punisher🏷 Dead Oceans • 📅 2020

Phoebe Bridgers, Punisher [📷: Dead Oceans]“We hate ‘Tears in Heaven’ / But it’s sad that his baby died.” What a line, 🎙 Phoebe Bridgers! Of course, the 🏆 Grammy-nominated musician is an incredible songwriter.  🎵 “Moon Song” the seventh track from  💿 Punisher (2020) is no exception.  That said, the excerpted lyric appears from the second verse of this emotional record as opposed to the beginning.  Furthermore, the poetic 🎙 Eric Clapton criticism (sympathizing with his loss) isn’t the big takeaway or theme from “Moon Song” – it is just a killer lyric!  “Moon Song” is complex to the nth degree – various allusions, Conor Oberst connections (?), dog/bird stuff…

Going back to the beginning of “Moon Song,” it is clear that in the relationship only one person is carrying the weight.  Honestly, the opening lyrics reflect this: “You asked to walk me home / But I had to carry you.” NOT GOOD, NOT GOOD, NOT GOOD.  Oh, the red flags 🚩🚩🚩! It gets worse. Basically,  Bridgers is willing to be treated badly despite the fact she’s getting nothing in return. “So, I will wait for the next time you want me,” she sings in the first chorus, adding, “Like a dog with a bird at your door.”  Just disgusting – the dog with a bird part, of course! PETS and their gifts 😏!  Interestingly, there is another dog and bird reference at the end, which further reflects the brilliance of Bridgers as a writer: “When you saw the dead little bird / You started crying / But you know the killer doesn’t understand.” So, as a dog doesn’t understand that its own doesn’t want a dead bird, the lover doesn’t understand she’s wasting her time and energy.  Why, honestly, is she so willing  to “Give you the moon.” So much more could be said about 🎵 “Moon Song” but it is best to let this artful, musical masterwork speak for itself.

3. Conan Gray, “Never Ending Song”

🎵 “Never Ending Song” • 🏷 Republic • 🗓 2023

Conan Gray, Never Ending Song [📷: Republic]“Tried to turn the page, but our story wasn’t stoppin’.” Oh 🎙 Conan Gray! The handsome, incredibly talented gift that keeps on giving.  Post-Superache, the pop musician returned with a brief but potent single, 🎵 “Never Ending Song”. Following the intro featuring crescendoing pummeling drums, “Never Ending Song” settles into 80s styled production which embraces New Wave and synthpop cues. Notably, Gray works with producers  🎛 ILYA and Max Martin.  The result: a match made in heaven 😇.  Gray serves up awesome lead vocals. Furthermore, the melody is incredibly tuneful in the verses. The verses are brief, but the personality that Gray exhibits is #GIVING.  Of course, the centerpiece is the simple, catchy chorus: “And it goes on, and on, and on / Like a never ending song.” While the chorus, and the production that accompany it, are arguably the crème de la crème of “Never Ending Song,” the bridge is a vibe too. During the bridge, there is nice contrast served up – “Can you make us stay forever? / Are we done? Can you make it play.” I love how Gray ascends into his upper register at the end of it, prior to returning to familiar territory with the chorus.  His performance is a bit freer post-bridge, incorporating some more ambitious vocal ad-libs. Gray can do no wrong! Short but sweet, 🎵 “Never Ending Song” marks another winner for Conan.

4. Rachel Platten, “Fight Song”

💿 Wildfire 🏷 Columbia • 📅 2016

Rachel Platten, Wildfire [📷: Columbia]“This is my fight song / Take back my life song / Prove I’m alright song / My power’s turned on.” Now that’s a prime example of empowerment! One song and one song only fueled 💿 Wildfire, the 2016, major label debut album by 🎙 Rachel Platten: 🎵 “Fight Song.” “Fight Song” greatly elevated the singer/songwriter’s profile.  She co-wrote it with 🎼✍ Dave Bassett while 🎛 Jon Levine serves as producer. Just reading/hearing the excerpted lyrics, how can you NOT be uplifted?

“And all those things I didn’t say

Wrecking balls inside my brain

I will scream them loud tonight

Can you hear my voice this time?”

“Fight Song” has no shortage of fight.  It exemplifies being resolute – motivated to fend off any adversity that comes your way. “But there’s a fire burning in my bones / Still believe / Yeah, I still believe.” Yes – say that, Rachel!

5. Harry Belafonte, “Day-O (Banana Boat Song)

💿 Calypso🏷 Sony Music Entertainment • 📅 1956

Harry Belafonte, Calypso [📷: Sony Music Entertainment]“Day-o, day-ay-ay-o / Daylight come and me wan’ go home.” In 2023, the world lost a legend in 🎙 Harry Belafonte. The 🏆 Grammy-winner was a tremendous talent: singer, actor, and activist.  He was best known for his 1956 pop hit, 🎵 “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” (sometimes referred to as “Banana Boat”).  Even though Belafonte landed a hit with “Day-O” as the opener on his album, 💿 Calypso, the song is a traditional Jamaican folk song, performed in Jamaican patois. Furthermore, it is in call and response form (“Work all night on a drink a rum / (Daylight come and me wan’ go home)”).  The first time you hear “Banana Boat,” it is infectious as albeit.

“Banana Boat” commences with a dramatic performance by Belafonte, emphasizing the “Day-o” in a slow tempo. His tone and powerful pipes stand out to say the least. Soon enough, the calypso percussion kicks in in all its glory.  He leads the charge as the leader (the call), while the chorus masterfully responds with signature Daylight come and me wan’ go home lyrics.  Perhaps the most memorable moment besides dramatic opening and closing moments by Harry is the verse, “Lift six foot, seven foot, eight foot, bunch.” Memorably,  🏆 Grammy winning rapper 🎙 Lil Wayne samples this portion for his own hit, 🎵 “6 Foot 7 Foot”.  What more is there to say about 🎵 “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” – the music speaks for itself.

6. Peggy Lee, “The Siamese Cat Song”

💿 Lady and the Tramp 🏷 Disney • 🗓 1955

Lady and the Tramp [📷: Disney]“We are Siamese if you please (meow) / We are Siamese if you don’t please (meow).” 🎵 “The Siamese Cat Song”, from one of Disney’s most beloved animated films, 🎦 Lady and the Tramp, is easily one of its most controversial and problematic. You see “The Siamese Cat Song” plays on Asian stereotypes 👎 👎 👎.  Early in Disney’s history, the company, despite changing the face of animation, and serving up timeless films, had issues with insensitive depictions of minorities and, honestly, racism.

Everything about this 🎙 Peggy Lee record would be scrapped in the 2020s. No, it isn’t about being woke, it is simply about a negative depiction of Asians.  Notably, in the 2019 live action remake, the problematic Siamese Cats are eliminated.  In the original, Si and Am are a hot mess – they create sheer havoc.  They want to make the swimming goldfish drown – homicidal thoughts! Furthermore, they want to steal milk from a baby – SCANDALOUS! The point is, they are troublemakers and given the distinct Asian accent that the song is performed in (Siamese cats originate in Thailand), with improper grammar, it feels sus and insensitive, at least by 2020s standards.  Also, the instrumentation, particularly the use of the gong, only makes things worse…  There are far more controversial tunes than 🎵 “The Siamese Cat Song” but, given this caricature (including intentionally slanted eyes visually speaking), as well as Disney’s history of unflattering depictions of Asian characters, the controversy is justified.

7. Jay-Z, “Song Cry”

💿 The Blueprint 🏷 UMG Recordings, Inc. • 📅 2001

Jay-Z, The Blueprint [📷: UMG Recordings, Inc.]“I can’t see ‘em comin’ down my eyes / So, I gotta make the song cry.” Sometimes, songs that DON’T achieve pop success earn notoriety, nonetheless. A prime example of this is the beloved rap record, 🎵 “Song Cry” by 🎙 Jay-Z.  The 🏆 Grammy-winning rapper has attained ample chart success throughout his career, securing 22 top 10 hits, four of which are no. 1 hits 🤯. “Song Cry,” a single, mind you, was NOT a top-10 hit, nor did it chart on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s a travesty but the song crying is absolutely and utterly iconic, period.  The Bobby Glenn sampling gem from 💿 The Blueprint (2001) was nominated for the 🏆 Grammy for Best Male Rap Solo Performance, deservedly.  Hov is on autopilot on this 🎛 Just Blaze produced masterpiece – NO CAP 🚫 🧢!

The rhymes are ELECTRIC in every single verse, PERIOD!!! “We used to use umbrellas to face the bad weather,” Jay raps of his girl in the first verse, continuing, “So now we travel first class to change the forecast.” WOO ✈️! In the second verse, he credits her because, “You helped me get the keys to that V dot 6 / We was so happy poor, but when we got rich / That’s when our signals got crossed and we got flipped…” Of course, Hov goes on to take the blame – it was H-I-M, him.  By the third verse, it is clear she is over him. Even though he asserts, “I was just fuckin’ them girls, I was gon’ get right back,” he also acknowledges FACTS: “But once a good girl’s gone bad, she’s gone forever / I’ll mourn forever / Shit, I’ve got to live with the fact I did you wrong forever.” More than two decades later, the emotional, song crying of 🎵 “Song Cry” remains potent.

8. 2 Chainz, “Birthday Song” (Ft. Kanye West)

💿 Based on a T.R.U. Story 🏷  Def Jam 📅 2012

2 Chainz, Based On A T.R.U. Story [📷: Island/Def Jam]“All I want for my birthday is a big booty ho / all I want for my birthday is a big booty ho.” 🎵 “Birthday Song” captures a far different desire than I personally relate to for my day of birth! For 🎙 2 Chainz, on the crowning achievement from his debut album, 💿 Based on a T.R.U. Story (2012), he wants to have sex with a sexy ho on his birthday. At least he’s honest, right? As dumb as “Birthday Song” goes, it’s infectious to the nth degree.  The chorus is the crowning achievement:

“They ask me what I do and who I do it for

And how I come up with this shit up in the studio

All I want for my birthday is a big booty ho…

When I die, bury me inside the Gucci store

When I die, bury me inside the Louis store…”

Beside the outlandish lyrics, there are plenty of other highlights. The creative production work serves as a great backdrop for both 2 Chainz and featured guest, 🎙 Kanye West. Following the chorus, there’s contrast – a change of pace – that keeps “Birthday Song” fresh from a musical standpoint.  That’s not to say that this is a lyrical masterpiece by any means, but the musical contrast makes things more enjoyable.  Arguably, West out-raps 2 Chainz in the second verse, while the combined effort by both rappers kicks some serious @$$ in the third verse.

9. blink-182, “Adam’s Song”

💿 Enema of the State🏷 Geffen • 📅 1999

blink-182, Enema of the State [📷: Geffen]“I never thought I’d die alone / I laughed the loudest who’d have known? / I trace the cord back to the wall / No wonder it was never plugged in at all.” On the heavy “Adam’s Song,” the often, unserious 🎙 blink-182 got heavy, tackling teenage suicide. 🎵 “Adam’s Song” (💿 Enema of the State, 1999) comes from the perspective of Adam as he reflects on his sad, lonely life as he plans his own demise. “The choice was mine I didn’t think enough / I’m too depressed to go on / You’ll be sorry when I’m gone.” In the chorus, varied each time, it’s clear that Adam is at his breaking point given the lot of his life.

“I never conquered, rarely came

Sixteen just held such better days

Days when I still felt alive

We couldn’t wait to get outside

The world was wide, too late to try

The tour was over, we’d survived

I couldn’t wait till I got home

To pass the time in my room alone.”

10. The 1975, “Me & You Together Song”

💿 Notes on a Conditional Form🏷 Interscope 📅  2020

The 1975, Notes on a Conditional Form [📷: Interscope]🎵 “Me & You Together Song” arrived as the fourth 🎙 The 1975 single released in advance of 💿 Notes on a Conditional Form. The sound is LOUD + there’s a lot going on. The backdrop just doesn’t let up; it’s robust. That robustness comes from bright, rhythmic guitars, which are pronounced in the mix. One questions the balance, particularly when you throw in 🎙 Matthew Healy’s lead vocals and backing vocals.  Additionally, there’s a big bass line and anchoring drums. Beyond the sound, the theme is  INFATUATION, summed up by the chorus  soundly: “I’ve been in love with her for ages / And I can’t seem to get it right  / I fell in love with her in stages / My whole life.” This is simple and quite relatable – nothing objectionable.  Throughout the verses, Healy fills in the blanks about his love, specifically his mishaps and quirks.  In the first verse, he sings, “I can’t remember when we met / Because she didn’t have a top on.” You dog! In the second, there’s some queerness, supposedly: “I’m sorry that I’m kinda queer, it’s not as weird as it appears /… Oh, it’s okay, lots of people think I’m gay.” By the end, he emphasizes how long he’s been totally into her – “ages, and ages.” “Me & You Together Song” = very interesting.

11. Ying Yang Twins, “Wait (The Whisper Song)”

💿 U.S.A. – United State of Atlanta 🏷  The Orchard📅  2005

Ying Yang Twins, U.S.A. United State of Atlanta [📷: The Orchard]“Hey, how you doin’ lil mama let me whisper in ya ear / Tell ya somethin’ that you might like to hear / Got a sexy-ass body and ya ass look soft / Mind if I touch it to see if it’s soft.” Ah, we close out this ‘wait-worthy’ playlist with a classic – 🎙 Ying Yang Twins’ 🎵 “Wait (The Whisper Song).” Yes, “Wait (The Whisper Song)” from the duo’s 2005 album, 💿 U.S.A. – United State of Atlanta, is one of the filthier southern rap songs you’ll ever hear.  That said, it’s also among the most infectious and memorable.  Why? The minimal production work, the whispered-rhymes, and honestly, a heaping dose of filth. Case in point – the hook: “Hey bitch, wait ‘til you see my dick / Wait til you see my dick / Hey bitch wait til you see my dick / I’m a beat that pussy up.”

12. Elton John, “Your Song”

💿 Elton John 🏷 Mercury • 📅 1970

Elton John, Elton John [📷: Island Def Jam]“It’s a little bit funny / This feeling inside / I’m not one of those who can easily hide.” Those, ladies and gentlemen, are the iconic opening lyrics from 🎵 “Your Song”. “Your Song” is one of those PERFECT songs. It appeared on the 1970 🎙 Elton John album, 💿 Elton John! John continues singing, in the first verse, “I don’t have much money, but boy if I did / I’d buy a big house where we both could live.” Aww 🥰, the feels and the sentiment! As has been the case through much of his illustrious career, John penned the music while 🎼 ✍ Bernie Taupin composed the lyrics.  Of course, the distinct, expressive pipes of John brought Taupin’s lyrics to life 💪.

“Your Song” is one of the best and most recognizable songs from the Elton John collection.  It peaked at no. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it one of the 29 top 10 hits by the iconic Academy and Grammy Award winning artist 🤯. The songwriting, in tandem with a tuneful melody makes “Your Song” elite.  The verses are utterly sublime – quite thoughtful and poetic.  The centerpiece, of course, is the chorus:

“And you can tell everybody

This is your song

It may be quite simple, but now that it’s done

I hope you don’t mind

I hope you don’t mind

That I put down in the words

How wonderful life is while you’re in the world.”

Beyond marvelous songwriting and performance, the instrumental is stupendous.  Besides the rhythm section, warm strings add to the allure of 🎵 “Your Song”, truly a once in a lifetime record.

13. Michael Jackson, “Earth Song”

💿 HIStory – PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE – BOOK I🏷 Epic 📅 1995

Michael Jackson, HIStory Past, Present and Future - Book I [📷: Epic]Ah  🎵 “Earth Song,” a highlight from 🎙 Michael Jackson, The King of Pop’s most controversial album, 💿 HIStory – PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE – BOOK I.  Even so, that doesn’t stop this ballad from being among the most powerful of his career. Jackson gives listeners a bit of everything – pop, rock, R&B, and gospel.  Throw in the music video, and you’ve totally checked off the boxes of Gesamtkunstwerk. The way that the seven-minute “Earth Song” is assembled is EPIC. What makes “Earth Song” so awesome, first and foremost is Michael Jackson. He sings the hell out it.  He shows incredible emotion whether he’s singing more coolly and plaintively in the verses, or when he ratchets things up in the breakdown. In the breakdown, he gets a marvelous assist from 🎙 Andrae Crouch’s Choir.  Between the two, we get stunning, high-powered call and response bridging the spirit of rock and the soulful, uplifting sensibilities of gospel.

“What about yesterday? (What about us?)

What about the seas? (What about us?)

The heavens are falling down (What about us?)

I can’t even breathe (What about us?).”

Adding to the epic nature of “Earth Song” is how WOKE it was and remains to this day. Jackson speaks on the treatment of the earth (of course), as well as issues of humanity (“What about killing fields? Is there a time?”), as well as faith (“What about all the peace that you pledge your only son?”).
