1. Wiz Khalifa, “Iced Out Necklace”

💿 Multiverse 🏷 Taylor Gang Ent. / Asylum • 📅 2022

Wiz Khalifa, Multiverse [📷: Taylor Gang Ent. / Asylum]“Iced out necklace (Necklace) / My girl got a girlfriend, don’t fuck with niggas, she sexist (Sexist) / I bet she give me dome before we even get to the exit (Exit)…” Hmm 🤔, 🎙 Wiz Khalifa, that’s a lot to unpack. Certainly, the sexuality portion is handled questionably. What is clear is the jewelry is giving, and apparently, so is his girl… 😈 Every rap banger requires a reference to oral, right? 🎵 “Iced Out Necklace” appears as the ninth track from Wiz’s 2022 album, 💿 Multiverse. Wiz spits unapologetic bars over sick production courtesy of 🎛 Sledgren. Clearly, the Pittsburgh standout doesn’t give a fizzuck.  “Put two middle fingers up, say, ‘Fuck your life’ / Made more money than you in your fuckin’ life,” he spits in the first verse.  He says fuck in the first verse alone 20 more times! Wiz is less profane in the second verse, bragging about how awesome he is, including characterizing himself as “GOAT in the flesh” and “man of the year.” Still, it is that chorus, as sus as it may be in how it addresses sexuality, that makes 🎵 “Iced Out Necklace” the sugar honey iced tea.

2. Lana Del Rey, “Candy Necklace” (Ft. Jon Batiste)

💿 Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd🏷 Interscope • 📅 2023

Lana Del Rey, Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd [📷: Interscope]Did you know that 🎙 Jon Batiste performs on two songs from 💿 Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd, the ninth album by 🏆 Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, 🎙 Lana Del Rey? He first appears on 🎵 “Candy Necklace,” a record with plenty to unpack. Throughout this five-minute-plus number, Del Rey tells us about the ups and downs of a relationship.  There are plenty of thrills (“Rockafella, my umbrella / God, I love you, baby”), but also there’s danger and toxicity.  The second verse speaks to a troubling degree of unhealthiness: “Sittin’ on the sofa, feeling super suicidal / Hate to say the word, but, baby, hand on the Bible, I do / Feel like it’s you the one who’s bringin’ me down.” Batiste accompanies Del Rey on the piano, delivering a lovely piano solo before singing the titular line repeatedly.  This unhurried, piano ballad plays to Del Rey’s strengths, and successfully uses an unlikely collaborator in Batiste. Of course, Jon continues to unleash his musical brilliance on the scintillating 🎵 “Jon Batiste Interlude.”

3. Jessie Ware, “Pearls”

💿 That! Feels Good! 🏷 Universal Music Operations Limited • 🗓 2023

Jessie Ware, "Pearls" [📷: Universal Music Operations Limited]🎙 Jessie Ware certainly promotes disco on the energetic, utterly infectious  🎵 “Pearls”, the second single from her fifth studio album, 💿 That! Feels Good!. “Pearls” was written by Ware alongside 🎼 ✍ Clarence Coffee Jr., Sarah Hudson, and 🎛 Stuart Price who also produces. Vocally, Ware serves up sensational vocals. Always in good voice (she can sing), in this song in particular, she delivers an even fuller, more soulful brand of vocals.  All the while, the backdrop is giving a modern dance/disco sound.  With Stuart Price producing, exceptional production is the expectation. Besides lit vocals and epic production work, the lyrics are also a blast.  “Pearls” gets off to a fast start as Ware asserts, “Excuse me, I don’t know about you / But I think it’s time to / Shake it till the pearls fall.” Woo! It doesn’t stop with the pearls, which reappear in the chorus.  In the first verse, Jessie characterizes herself as lots of things – “a lover, a freak, and a mother” – adding, “Walking on the line, it’s my human nature / I crave a little danger.” Later, in the second, she is “A perfect Prima Donna.”  I concur, Jessie! 🎵 “Pearls” = absolutely and utterly awesome! Sickening stuff!

4. BROCKHAMPTON, “Chain On” (Ft. JPEGMAFIA)

💿 ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE 🏷 Question Everything, Inc. / RCA 📅 2021

BROCKHAMPTON, ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE [📷: Question Everything, Inc. / RCA]“Go ahead, throw a chain on, nigga / Tell them boys where you come from, nigga / Tell ‘em boys why I stay up late / Tryna say, tryna say, tryna say somethin’, nigga, tryna say.” WOO! On  🎵 “Chain On” (💿 ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE, 2021) 🎙 BROCKHAMPTON taps 🎙 JPEGMAFIA for the assist on the first verse.  One of my favorite lines: “Is it how I make the beats sounds like Poltergeist?” Woo! Of course, the Dua Lipa and 🚴 Lance Armstrong references are pretty rad too. In addition to the chorus (excerpted above) performed by 🎙 Kevin Abstract, 🎙 Dom McLennon makes his first appearance on the second verse.  He drops some electrifying rhymes throughout.  Interestingly, McLennon references faith, iconic soul singer 🎙 Marvin Gaye (specifically 🎵 “What’s Going On”) and gets socially conscious in his own right (“Screamin’, ‘Free my niggas,’ ‘til they free it’s never over / Spirit said, ‘it’s time for me to really be a soldier now’”).  Notably, “Chain On” samples the 🎙 Wu-Tang Clan classic, 🎵 “C.R.E.A.M.” and features 🎙 Method Man on the outro (“Cash rules everything around me…”).

5. Beyoncé, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”

💿 I Am… Sasha Fierce • 🏷 Sony • 📅 2008

Beyoncé, I Am...Sasha Fierce [📷: Sony]“All the single ladies (All the single ladies) / All the single ladies / Now put your hands up.” WOO! Need an example of a truly ubiquitous song? Look no further than 🎵 “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” one of the best songs in the illustrious musical catalog of 🎙 Beyoncé.  The song, which rightfully won the 🏆 Grammy for Song of the Year, appears on her 2008 double album, 💿 I Am… Sasha Fierce. “Single Ladies” is filled with fun. Produced by Queen Bey, 🎛 The-Dream, and Tricky Stewart, “Single Ladies” remains fresh 15 years after its arrival.  The beat! The synths! Most of all, the assertive, attitude-laden vocals of Queen Bey with catchy lyrics makes “Single Ladies” a surefire winner.  The minute you hear it, whether you’re a single lady, a married lady, or a fella, it makes you wanna dance – #INFECTIOUS.  The chorus is golden, with Beyoncé telling these boys, if you like it (aka her) you better lock it (her) down!

“‘Cause if you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it

If you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it

Don’t be mad once you see that he want it

If you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it

Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.”

6. Pusha T, “Neck & Wrist” (Ft. Jay-Z & Pharrell Williams)

💿 It’s Almost Dry • 🏷 Getting Out Our Dreams, Inc. / Def Jam • 📅 2022

Pusha T, It's Almost Dry [📷: Getting Out Our Dreams, Inc. / Def Jam]“Your eco-friendly jewelers, you keep recycling / Cartier bustdowns just not my thing.” Well, at least 🎙 Pusha T is honest, right? Anyways, anytime the 🏆 Grammy-nominated rapper collaborates with 🏆 Grammy-winning rapper, 🎙 Jay-Z, it’s a good thing 💯! 🎵 “Neck & Wrist” finds the two electrifying rappers collaborating once again, on Push’s 2022 album, 💿 It’s Almost Dry. Of course, it should also be noted that both were drug dealers. Besides Hov, Push is also assisted by 🎙 Pharrell Williams once more, as a vocalist and producer.  The centerpiece of “Neck & Wrist” is the chorus, which Williams gets the memorable, titular line. Pusha T is on autopilot in the first verse, not only criticizing unimaginative watches, but also giving us a high with the coke references (“The Colgate kilo, the hood needs whitening”). Jay-Z goes off in the second verse: “I blew bird money, y’all talkin’ Twitter feed / We got different Saab stories, save your soliloquies.” WOO! Prior to that, Hov throws a jab at cheap, unimpressive watches: “Neither I nor my wrist move mockingly / Y’all spend real money on fake watches, shockingly.” What more can be said? “Neck and wrist don’t lie,” baby!

7. Ava Max, “Diamonds & Dancefloors”

💿 Diamonds & Dancefloors 🏷 Atlantic • 🗓 2023

Ava Max, Diamonds & Dancefloors [📷: Atlantic]“Is diamonds and dance floors in every dream / I miss the music surroundin’ me.” WOO! 🎵 “Diamonds & Dancefloors” arrives as the seventh track on 💿 Diamonds & Dancefloors, the utterly superb sophomore album by 🎙 Ava Max. “Drown me in glitter, glitter and gold / All that I ask for, ask for, ask for / Diamonds and dance floors.”  So, why is Max so eager to be back on the dancefloor? The COVID-19 pandemic, period. Although “Diamonds & Dancefloors” is brief, it continues the consistency and excellence of the LP.  “Diamonds” commences warmly, serving up a chill vibe and lovely aesthetic. Max sings in a minor key, which seems to be her lane.  She is backed by a lit beat and driving rhythmic synths (🎛 Cirkut).  Over the backdrop, she sings effortlessly, as if she’s floating in the air.

8. Nelly Furtado, “Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)”

💿 The Spirit Indestructible🏷 Interscope • 📅 2012

Nelly Furtado, The Spirit Indestructible [📷: Interscope]With 🎵 “Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)” – a song that’s supposed to be about earrings – 🏆 Grammy winner 🎙 Nelly Furtado created one of the more clever, dirty songs of 2012. One reason we know why earrings are secondary (at best) is that Furtado reiterates “bigger the better, bigger the better…” over and over.  No one cares about the size of her hoops, but obviously, some folks care about ‘size’ when it comes to a certain body part in the nether region… There’s no doubt whatsoever that “Bigger the Better,” from 💿 The Spirit Indestructible is sensually derived. Furtado goes on to sing, “I don’t wanna talk about sex / Wanna express myself tonight…” Hmm, Interesting 🤔! She goes on in the next breath to say: “I can go fast; I can go slow/ I can go places nobody else goes / … Everybody say, hey, they goin’ at it all night and day…” Apparently, everything has to do with tempo, but we all know what she’s getting at. Can you say big ole double entendre? The second verse makes her points more obvious: “The boy going to feel my poison / I know he can’t stand the rain… / You got my rum rum shaking them another back / … and I never have to fake it fake it…” And yet, she doesn’t wanna talk about sex? And just to confirm, this record is Definitely NOT about earrings.

9. Logic, “Icy” (Ft. Gucci Mane)

💿 Confessions of a Dangerous Mind 🏷 Def Jam 📅 2019

Logic, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind [📷: Def Jam]“I’m icy / I’m clean / I’m a bad motherfucker / I’m mean.” The ability of 🏆 Grammy-nominated rapper 🎙 Logic to release music at a prolific pace is impressive.  That said, in 2019 in particular, it seems as if Bobby Hall has compromised quality for quantity.  That isn’t to say his 2019 album, 💿 Confessions of a Dangerous Mind is a bad project (it’s not), but it doesn’t find him expanding his scope but rather, opting for shallower ideas.  That’s why you end up with a record like 🎵 “Icy”. “Icy” appears as the ninth track on Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.  Logic taps southern rapper 🎙 Gucci Mane for the predictable banger.  If anything, “Icy” is a temporary high for Logic, and the comedown is not pretty.  This cut is built on every cliché and platitude you can think of in the rap game. Logic flexes hard, making sure that everyone knows he’s ‘the shit’ essentially: “I’m so cold, I think I’m made of ice.” Furthermore, Gucci Mane asserts himself as “A human glacier, wrist full of frozen water,” well, it’s not surprising in the least.

10. Rihanna, “Diamonds”

💿 Unapologetic🏷 Def Jam • 📅 2012

Rihanna, Unapologetic [📷: Def Jam]“At first sight I felt energy of sun rays / I saw the life inside your eyes…” Wow… that’s so beautiful! Despite being named 💿 Unapologetic, not every song from the 2012 🎙 Rihanna album can be classified as being ‘unapologetic.’  Case in point, the precious gem 🎵 “Diamonds,” which finds the 🏆 Grammy-winner asserting on the intro and outro, “Shine bright like a diamond, Shine bright like a diamond.”  In the context of Unapologetic, the Barbadian pop/R&B singer contrasts the overt “Phresh” that precedes with the tame yet potent no. 1 hit. “Diamonds” features excellent production work, as well as sound vocal production. The chorus is simply marvelous:

“So, shine bright tonight, you and I

We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky

Eye to eye, so alive

We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky…”

11. Lauv, “Bracelet”

💿 I met you when I was 18. 🏷 Lauv • 📅 2018

Lauv, I met you when I was 18 (playlist) [📷: Lauv]On 🎵 “Bracelet”, 🎙 Lauv (Ari Leff) reflects on the end of a relationship. “Didn’t know what I wanted / I’ll admit that,” Leff sings early on. He continues singing on the 💿 I met you when I was 18. highlight,  “Still don’t know what I wanted / I’ll be honest, I’m not ready to let you go.” Lamenting the fact that things are over, Leff is NOT ready to let go, evidenced by his need to wear her bracelet for an unspecified amount of time: “I used to have you, now I have this bracelet / I let you go but baby I’m gonna wear it / Until I don’t need to / Until I don’t need you.” The sound and vibe of “Bracelet” embraces elements of electronic, pop, and contemporary R&B music.

12. Wale, “Golden Salvation (Jesus Piece)”

💿 The Gifted🏷 Atlantic • 📅 2013

Wale, The Gifted [📷: Atlantic]“Jesus piece Jesus piece Jesus piece / But don’t nobody want know Jesus’ peace.”  At this point, we take a slight detour from matters of the chain – sort of.  🎙 Wale delivers some clever wordplay on 🎵 “Golden Salvation (Jesus Piece),” a surefire gem from his under appreciated 2013 album, 💿 The Gifted.  Yes, plenty of us remember the album’s strip club anthem, 🎵 “Clappers” (“Shawty got a big ol’ butt”), but “Golden Salvation” is the more noteworthy, thoughtful record.  What makes “Golden Salvation (Jesus Piece)” intriguing is the fact that it explores material versus spiritual.  The play on words that’s compelling is “piece” versus “peace.”  The piece is a Jesus piece which is usually a golden chain. Of course, the peace itself is “Jesus peace,” true “golden salvation” if you will 🙌.

13. Freda Payne, “Band of Gold”

💿 Band of Gold 🏷 HDH / Invictus • 📅 1970

Freda Payne, Band of Gold [📷: Invictus]“Now that you’re gone / All that’s left is a band of gold / All that’s left of the dreams I hold / Is a band of gold / And the memories of what love could be / If you were still here with me.” Woo! Versatile singer and actress 🎙 Freda Payne earned the biggest hit of her career with her 1970 single, 🎵 “Band of Gold”.  “Band of Gold” appeared on Payne’s album of the same title. “Band of Gold” also graced Payne’s 💿 Greatest Hits compilation, released in 1991.  “Band of Gold” was written by 🎼 ✍ Ron Dunbar and Edyth Wayne, with Edyth Wayne being a pseudonym for the legendary songwriting/production collective comprised of Brian Holland, Eddie Holland, and Lamont Dozier.  “Band of Gold” was a pop hit, peaking at no. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and being certified gold by the RIAA.

“Band of Gold” is incredibly catchy, as exemplified by the excerpted chorus.  Furthermore, the music is groovy as albeit – it’s a soul classic through and through.  Vocally, Payne shows off her versatility without a hitch.  That said, what often draws the most interest with this song beyond its elite musicianship is the theme.  In the most general sense, literally right after becoming husband and wife, the marriage is effectively over, like, oh snap! “We kissed after taking vows,” she sings in the first verse, continuing, ‘but that night of the honeymoon / We stayed in separate rooms.” That’s exactly why Payne is singing “All that’s left is a band of gold!” Similarly, the second verse testifies to this sus union: “I’d wait in the darkness of my lonely room / Filled with sadness, filled with gloom / Hoping soon / That you’d walk back through that door.”  What’s interesting is, this record is subject to multiple interpretations with two popular takes including the sexual inabilities of the man in the relationship, as well as the fact she may have married a gay man.  Regardless, it’s a fabulous, fabulous record.
