1. Coco Jones, โ€œICUโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ What I Didnโ€™t Tell You โ€ข ๐Ÿท Def Jam โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2022

Coco Jones, What I Didnโ€™t Tell You [๐Ÿ“ท: Def Jam]โ€œSomethinโ€™ โ€˜bout your hands on my body / Feels better than any man I ever had.โ€ Ooh-la-la, ๐ŸŽ™ Coco Jones! On ๐ŸŽต โ€œICUโ€, the heat โ€“ sexual heat that is โ€“ is turned all the way up on high! The R&B singer is feeling this guy something fierce. Although they make an agreement to be friends, the attraction appears to be too much to not be more, or, perhaps, live. In the second verse of this lush ๐ŸŽ› DJ Camper production, she sings, โ€œFind myself readinโ€™ your comments again / And then we end up in each otherโ€™s heads.โ€โ€ฏโ€ฏ

 โ€ฏ

In chorus, Coco Jones asserts, in sultry fashion, โ€œMaybe I-I-I-I-I, I need you / I breathe you, turninโ€™ my heart blue, ooh, ooh.โ€ By the end of this gorgeous highlight from her 2022 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ What I Didnโ€™t Tell You, Jones realizes, โ€œBaby, my lifeโ€™s just off without you / Maybe youโ€™re worth it all to me, baby.โ€ ๐ŸŽต โ€œICUโ€ captures a bit of everything. It is steamy at times, but never crosses the line.  Beyond the heat, however, Jonesโ€™ health seems to be in jeopardy due to matters of the heart.

2. Trey Songz, โ€œHeart Attackโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Chapter V โ€ข ๐Ÿท Atlantic โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2012

Trey Songz, Chapter V [๐Ÿ“ท: Atlantic]๐ŸŽ™ Trey Songz had a ๐ŸŽต โ€œHeart Attackโ€ in 2012. Thankfully, his heart attack was not literal ๐Ÿ˜…! His problems, on this highlight from his fifth studio album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Chapter V, are related to love as opposed to physical ailments. Still, sometimes, those love ailments can totally F you up, which Trey references in the chorus:

โ€œIn too deep, canโ€™t think about giving it up

But I never knew love, would feel like a heart attack

Itโ€™s killing me, swear I never cried so much

โ€˜Cause I never knew love would hurt this fucking bad.โ€

Yup, still qualifies as an EMERGENCY in my books. โ€œHeart Attackโ€ was penned with R&B hit-maker ๐ŸŽผ โœ Rico Love. This surefire gem features an inspired performance by Songz, relatable songwriting, and great production work (ah, those big drums and synths). Sure, heโ€™s experiencing a heart attack caused by the plight of love, but he sounds utterly superb singing about it!

3. Lady Gaga, โ€œ911โ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Chromatica โ€ข ๐Ÿท Interscope โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2020

Lady Gaga, Chromatica [๐Ÿ“ท : Interscope]๐ŸŽต โ€œ911โ€โ€ฏboasts one of the best, most inescapable beats onโ€ฏ๐Ÿ’ฟ Chromatica, period.โ€ฏ In the context of the album, itโ€™s a continuation of โ€œFun Tonight.โ€ Sure,โ€ฏ๐ŸŽ™ Lady Gagaโ€ฏwasnโ€™t having fun then, and the case is similar here, sigh. On the chorus, the Grammy-winner asserts, โ€œMy biggest enemy is me, pop a 911 / My biggest enemy is me ever since day one.โ€ With the verses providing some insight, and the chorus summing up the singerโ€™s mental health and such, backtrack to the pre-chorus to hear some sick falsetto.โ€ฏ While the melody is simple on the pre-chorus, it works fabulously.

4. Logic, โ€œ1-800-273-8255โ€ (Ft. Alessia Cara & Khalid)

๐Ÿ’ฟ Everybody โ€ข ๐Ÿท Def Jam โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2017

Logic, Everybody [๐Ÿ“ท: Def Jam]With the release of ๐ŸŽต โ€œ1-800-273-8255โ€ (๐Ÿ’ฟ Everybody), ๐ŸŽ™ Logic easily released the biggest, heaviest, and most meaningful song of his career.  What makes โ€œ1-800-273-8255โ€ so heavy? The title is the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Logic approaches the song as a progression. It begins from the suicidal perspective, moves to encouraging the suicidal person to embrace life, and finally finds the suicidal person coming to the desire to live. Heโ€™s assisted by an angelic ๐ŸŽ™ Alessia Cara and ๐ŸŽ™ Khalid, who provides the punctuation mark, as the suicidal person whoโ€™s seen the light.

Logic, 1-800-273-8255 music video [๐Ÿ“ท: Def Jam]Beyond highlighting suicide, itself, the music video adds an LGBTQ+ ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ element.  The video focuses on a black gay teen struggling with his sexuality. After contemplating suicide, he gets the proper help, as well as acceptance. Suicide within the LGBTQ community ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ, particularly its youngest members, is a major issue.

5. Demi Lovato, โ€œICU (Madisonโ€™s Lullabye)โ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Dancing with the Devilโ€ฆ The Art of Starting Over โ€ข ๐Ÿท Island โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2021

Demi Lovato, Dancing with the Devil... The Art of Starting Over [๐Ÿ“ท: Island]โ€œI didnโ€™t want those innocent eyes / To watch me fall from graceโ€ฆโ€ A fall from grace, huh? On the piano ballad, ๐ŸŽต โ€œICU (Madisonโ€™s Lullabye)โ€ (๐Ÿ’ฟ Dancing with the Devilโ€ฆ The Art of Starting Over), ๐ŸŽ™ Demi Lovato addresses her younger sister, Madison Lee De La Garza. โ€œTried to protect you, I wanna direct you / To keep you from my mistakes,โ€ The ๐Ÿ† Grammy-nominated artist continues singing in the first verse. Lovato is vulnerable, singing about her overdose.  Take one listen and you can tell that โ€œICU (Madisonโ€™s Lullabye)โ€ is a very authentic, genuine song, that comes from the heart. You buy what sheโ€™s selling.

The chorus is the centerpiece of โ€œICUโ€:

โ€œTuck your hair behind your ear

Until you fall asleep

Iโ€™ll say a prayer and keep you near

Youโ€™re always there with me

I promise Iโ€™ll be there, donโ€™t worry

โ€˜Cause I was blind, but now I see clearly

I see you, oh-oh.โ€

The big takeaway from ๐ŸŽต โ€œICU (Madisonโ€™s Lullabye)โ€ is about resilience โ€“ overcoming a tremendous adversity.  Addiction is quite the obstacle, and Demi had to seek help in order to return to a healthier place.  Furthermore, being unable to see her sister until she became clean served as a catalyst for Lovato to get help โ€“ get back on the right foot. There is nothing uplifting about the ICU or addiction, but persevering past those ugly demons is worth celebrating.

6. Teddy Swims, โ€œ911โ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Tough Love (EP) โ€ข ๐Ÿท SWIMS Int. / Warner โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2022

Teddy Swims, Tough Love [๐Ÿ“ท: SWIMS Int. / Warner]Atlanta, Georgia singer/songwriter ๐ŸŽ™ Teddy Swims (Jaten Dimsdale) got his start via YouTube.  Eventually, this โ€œchameleon soulโ€ ended up with a record deal โ€“ rad to say the least.  In 2022, Swims released a brand-new EP, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Tough Love, comprised of six songs.  Among the best songs on the 18-minute EP is ๐ŸŽต โ€œ911.โ€  โ€œI got your back without you even asking / If I gotta whoop somebodyโ€™s ass, Iโ€™ma do it with passion.โ€ Hell yeah! Swims kicks off Tough Love (EP) sensationally with โ€œ911.โ€  If โ€œ911โ€ were the introduction to Jaten Dimsdale, it proves to be a marvelous one.  Itโ€™s a soulful pop record featuring well-rounded production (๐ŸŽ› Jeff โ€œGittyโ€ Gitelman) and sounds that are idiomatic of neo-soul; call this a blue-eyed soul gem. More impressive than the production is the electrifying vocals by Dimsdale.  Those pipes are impressive to the nth degree.

7. R3HAB & Timmy Trumpet, โ€œ911โ€

๐ŸŽต โ€œ911โ€ โ€ข ๐Ÿท CYB3RPVNK โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2020

R3HAB x Timmy Trumpet, 911 [๐Ÿ“ท: CYB3RPVNK]โ€œ911, Iโ€™m a fire / This damn place โ€˜bout to light up / 911, Iโ€™m a fire / Evacuate, evacuate.โ€ The brief but scintillatingโ€ฏโ€œ911โ€โ€ฏarrives courtesy ofโ€ฏ๐ŸŽ™ R3HABโ€ฏandโ€ฏ๐ŸŽ™ Timmy Trumpet. Here, the listener is bestowed with energetic, enthusiastic, and exuberant production. Thatโ€™s certainly the expectation from a dance/electronic track, not to mention one featuring two producers at the helm. Of course, there are also numerous writing credits, also responsible for the lyrics. The uncredited vocals are assertive and bright, all the while seeking escape from a โ€˜disasterโ€™: โ€œMy moves are super sick (Hey) / I need a doctor quick (Hey) / This is an S.O.S (Hey) / I need assistance fast.โ€ Disaster indeed! ๐Ÿ˜

8. Tank, โ€œEmergencyโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Now or Never โ€ข ๐Ÿท Atlantic โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2010

Tank, Now or Never [๐Ÿ“ท: Atlantic]โ€œGot a lady on the line / Screaminโ€™ โ€˜bout what she need, oh /โ€ฆ Iโ€™m leaving, rushing to see,โ€ ๐ŸŽ™ Tank (Durell Babbs) sings in the first verse of ๐ŸŽต โ€œEmergency.โ€ He adds, โ€œI got the sirens ๐Ÿšจ on / (Iโ€™m running every light) / She says sheโ€™s home alone / (Iโ€™m needed in her life) / Until I get there, girl / Stay on the line.โ€ Hmm, the ๐Ÿ† Grammy-nominated R&B singer/songwriter doesnโ€™t seem to be tackling a traditional life or death emergency on the highlight from his 2010 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Now or Never.  Instead, the emergency encompasses matters of the heart. In the chorus, he confirms this emergency โ€“ being the first responder that he is โ€“ is about making sure no one else claims her first (#MUST HURRY)! โ€œI gotta save her, if Iโ€™m any later / Somebody might get there before me / Emergency, that 911โ€™s for me.โ€ WOO! As always Babbs sings sublimely.  The songwriting is quite clever. Fittingly, the production (๐ŸŽ› The Song Dynasty) on this sensual (if traumatic) ballad is slick and refined โ€“ stuttering drums, tender piano, and a supporting pad.  This is an emergency we can rally behind โค๏ธ!

9. Trevor Daniel, โ€œ911โ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Nicotine โ€ข ๐Ÿท Alamo / Interscope โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2020

Trevor Daniel, Nicotine [๐Ÿ“ท: Alamo / Interscope]โ€œ911, itโ€™s an emergency / She on fire, sheโ€™s summertime / Like kryptonite, weak in the kneesโ€ฆโ€ Some things are just universal, and thatโ€™s exactly what ๐ŸŽ™ Trevor Daniel captures on ๐ŸŽต โ€œ911โ€ from his debut album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Nicotine. Thereโ€™s an emergency, but itโ€™s not a medical emergency. โ€˜Sheโ€™ is the culprit in this case because sheโ€™s got Trevor feeling some type of way. In the chorus, he continues, โ€œShe got me tongue-tied / Is she the type to be down and ride / โ€˜Til the day I die? Yeah, yeah.โ€ Yep, the man is in his feeling.  But hey, what better way to sing about an emergency than being backed by smooth guitars and a sweet, urban beat.

10. Rick Ross, โ€œ911โ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ God Forgives, I Donโ€™tโ€ฏ โ€ข ๐Ÿท The Island Def Jam Music Group โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2012

Rick Ross, God Forgives, I Don't [๐Ÿ“ท: Def Jam]โ€œI bow my head, I pray to God / Survival of the fittest: help me hold my chopper lord / If I die today, on the highway to heaven / Can I let my top down in my 911?โ€ Okay, there is not as big of an EMERGENCY on ๐ŸŽ™ Rick Rossโ€™ ๐ŸŽต โ€œ911.โ€ The Grammy-nominated rapper is more focused on hisโ€ฏ๐ŸŽ๏ธ Porsche 911โ€ฏthan 9-1-1. Even so, Ross does reference the emergency number, in addition to the date (September 11) as well.โ€ฏโ€œ911โ€โ€ฏis a must-hear banger from his 2012 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟโ€ฏGod Forgives, I Donโ€™t โ€“ INDEED! โ€œ911โ€ features badass production (๐ŸŽ›๏ธ Young Shun) with malicious synths and hard-nosed drum programming anchoring things TF down ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ”ฅ. It runs long โ€“ five-and-a-half minutes โ€“ but hey, Rick is on autopilot.

11. My Chemical Romance, โ€œCancerโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ The Black Parade โ€ข ๐Ÿท Reprise โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2006

My Chemical Romance, The Black Parade / Living with Ghosts (The 10th Anniversary) [๐Ÿ“ท: Reprise]โ€œIf you could get me a drink / Of water โ€˜cause my lips are chapped and faded.โ€ Of course, of course โ€“ that is not asking much. โ€œCall my Aunt Marie / Help her gather all my things / And bury me in all my favorite colors.โ€ Um, bury? Uh-oh โ€“ this is getting morbid! ๐ŸŽต โ€œCancerโ€ is one of the best songs by ๐ŸŽ™ My Chemical Romance.  Arguably, it is the crowning achievement of their conceptual, 2006 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ The Black Parade. Sometimes, the best songs are sad like โ€œCancer,โ€ which finds ๐ŸŽ™ Gerard Way portraying a character who is diagnosed with cancer ๐Ÿ˜ข.  The patient understands his cancer is terminal โ€“  his death sentence.  That is incredibly tough to cope with.

โ€œCancerโ€ is filled with pain, which the listener perceives from Wayโ€™s assertive performance as well as the dramatic lyrics.  The lyrics donโ€™t sugarcoat the experience โ€“ they keep it ๐Ÿ’ฏ by all means.  In the second verse, the patient sings, โ€œNow turn away / Cause Iโ€™m awful just to see / Cause all my hairs abandoned all my body / Oh, my agony / Know that I will never marry / Baby, Iโ€™m just soggy from the chemo.โ€ After reading some annotations of this song, specifically regarding the second verse, it is notable that the patient shows some legit disappointment and sadness about his lot before blaming that vulnerable moment on chemotherapy. โ€œBut counting down the days to go / It just ainโ€™t living,โ€ the patient โ€“ well Way โ€“ sings in the chorus.  Also, fittingly, he adds, in his goodbye message, โ€œโ€˜Cause the hardest part of this is leaving you.โ€ #Fuck Cancer feels appropriate here.
