1. Aaron Frazer, โ€œBad Newsโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Introducingโ€ฆ โ€ข ๐Ÿท Dead Oceans โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2021

Aaron Frazer, Introducing... [๐Ÿ“ท: Dead Oceans / Easy Eye Sound]๐ŸŽ™ Aaron Frazer, a member of ๐ŸŽ™ Durand Jones & The Indications, steps out on his own his 2021 debut album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Introducingโ€ฆ. Throughout the retro-soul LP, Frazer definitely makes the best of a soulful backdrop and his ability to croon like an absolute boss.  Perfectly fitting this newsworthy list is the song, ๐ŸŽต โ€œBad News.โ€

โ€œIf I left you, what would you do?
All I know is
That'd be bad news.โ€

Despite its title, thereโ€™s no โ€˜bad newsโ€™ regarding the quality of โ€œBad News.โ€ Clearly, this is a record that seeks to emulate 70s soul โ€“ think Marvin Gaye.  Frazer continues to impress with his smooth, effortless, never sounding as if he dares to break a sweat.  Equally awesome as the vocals is the instrumental, which really solidifies this retro sensibility.  The songwriting is solid, keeping things relatively simple, particularly on the chorus, highlighting the titular lyrics.

2. Fiona Apple, โ€œNewspaperโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Fetch the Bolt Cutters โ€ข ๐Ÿท Epic โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

Fiona Apple, Fetch the Bolt Cutters [๐Ÿ“ท: Epic]๐ŸŽ™Fiona Apple only releases an album โ€œonce in a blue moon.โ€ Itโ€™s true; there is a gap of at least three years between every album in her discography. After releasing ๐Ÿ’ฟ The Idler Wheelโ€ฆ, her sole album of the 2010s, her fifth album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Fetch the Bolt Cutters, arrives nearly eight years later! Fetch the Bolt Cutters earned top honors on our ๐ŸŽง 40 Best Albums of 2020.  Now on to the reason why Fetch the Bolt Cutters gets some love on ๐ŸŽง 11 News Songs That Are Definitely Newsworthy, ๐ŸŽต โ€œNewspaperโ€!

The five-minute-plus โ€œNewspaperโ€ was named after the percussion orchestra file created by Apple, according to Vulture.  She also states this rhythmic joint is โ€œabout two specific people,โ€ who she doesnโ€™t โ€œthink โ€ฆ will even be aware of it.โ€ Hmm, interesting! Apple lacks vocal finesse on โ€œNewspaper,โ€ but thatโ€™s actually a big part of the charm.  Sheโ€™s aggressive, assertive, and raw.  The key lyric:

โ€œI wonder what lies heโ€™s telling you about me
To make sure that weโ€™ll never be friends.โ€

Damn!

3. Aries, โ€œBad Newsโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ WELCOME HOME โ€ข ๐Ÿท WUNDERWORLD โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

Aries, Welcome Home [๐Ÿ“ท: WUNDERWORLD]Sigh, there is definitely plenty of bad news for ๐ŸŽ™ Aries on ๐ŸŽต โ€œBad News,โ€ the opener on his 2019 project, ๐Ÿ’ฟ WELCOME HOME.  For the rapper, that bad news seems to be substance abuse but also those devastating matters of the heart.  From the beginning, the listener senses that things are sketchy for Aries, even if he never explicitly utters the phase, โ€œbad news.โ€

โ€œBlacked out, howโ€™d the other night last?
Maybe come around for a minute, shit, I like that
I could never catch, taking aim, mightโ€™ve missed you
Couple hundred miles out, if I her the text, mm.โ€

Beyond the chorus, Aries mentions popping pills and drinking.  He also references his potential death, most notably on the first verse, asserting, โ€œMy death be regicide, thatโ€™s if Iโ€™m ever gone.โ€ Itโ€™s a contradiction of sorts, but the following line, he asks, โ€œIf you pop me in my face, please spare the better side.โ€  Regardless of the negative connotation, โ€œBad Newsโ€ is by no means bad, musically speaking!

4. PARTYNEXTDOOR, โ€œTHE NEWSโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ PARTYMOBILE โ€ข ๐Ÿท Warner / OVO โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

PARTYNEXTDOOR, Partymobile [๐Ÿ“ท : OVO Sound / Warner]โ€œWhatโ€™s news too you, it ainโ€™t news to me / And whatโ€™s blue to you, it ainโ€™t blue to me.โ€ Hmm, somebodyโ€™s been caught, we can presumeโ€ฆ Anyways, ๐ŸŽต โ€œThe Newsโ€ appears as the third track on ๐Ÿ’ฟ PARTYMOBILE, the 2020 album by Canadian R&B musician ๐ŸŽ™ PARTYNEXTDOOR.  This is a R&B record thatโ€™s definitely a vibe, idiomatic of the hella slow (lethargic), moody R&B weโ€™re accustomed to hearing from Canada.  From the start of โ€œThe News,โ€ thereโ€™s definitely a heaviness.

Contributing to the vibe of this four-and-a-half-minute number isnโ€™t only the moody vocals of PND, itโ€™s also the production.  As is often the case, the backdrop, courtesy of ๐ŸŽ› Hoskins and ๐ŸŽ› Bizness Boi, is sleek, supporting the moodiness of the artist.  If the aforementioned chorus werenโ€™t enough to confirm where PND stands, there are numerous lyrical examples.  Exhibit A: โ€œHurt me, then tell me, โ€˜Man upโ€™ /โ€ฆ Ask me questions, then donโ€™t care about the answers.โ€  Yeah, never good. Exhibit B: โ€œDeep down, I feel tied down.โ€ Also, not ideal. Then thereโ€™s the outro, where he totally exposes her:

โ€œYou got a side that nobodyโ€™s seen, yeah
You got a volume nobodyโ€™s heard
Promised me somethinโ€™, not with your words
You told me thereโ€™s nobody else
But I see different.โ€

5. Kehlani, โ€œBad Newsโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ It Was Good Until It Wasnโ€™t โ€ข ๐Ÿท Atlantic โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

Kehlani, It Was Good Until It Wasn't [๐Ÿ“ท: Atlantic]Following the rousing ๐ŸŽต โ€œCan I,โ€ Grammy-nominated R&B standout Kehlani slackens the pace on her sophomore album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ It Was Good Until It Wasnโ€™t with ๐ŸŽต โ€œBad News.โ€ Despite the negative connotation of the song title, where the listener is concerned, Kehlani serves up no bad news, just continued musical excellence.  My question is, how in the world did the Grammys manage to neglect It Was Good Until It Wasnโ€™t a nomination for best progressive R&B album? Whatever.

Focusing on โ€œBad News,โ€ it excels in its role as a slow jam.  The chorus in particular is quite catchy, in all its explicit simplicity? Kehlaniโ€™s gonna โ€œMake you wanna give all that shit upโ€ฆโ€ What shit exactly? Essentially, his dangerous, and suspect ways.  She urges, on the second verse of this lush ๐ŸŽ› Jahaan Sweet production, โ€œJust be on some cool shit with me.โ€ There it isโ€ฆ I think!

6. Mac Miller, โ€œGood Newsโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Circles โ€ข ๐Ÿท Warner โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

Mac Miller, Circles [๐Ÿ“ท: Warner]๐ŸŽต โ€œGood Newsโ€ is the crowning achievement of ๐Ÿ’ฟ Circles, the posthumous album by ๐ŸŽ™ Mac Miller. One of many ๐ŸŽ› Jon Brion co-productions on the album, โ€œGood Newsโ€ sounds quite refined, with plucked strings, a subtle, but highly effective, dusty drum groove, soulful electric guitar, and superb, modest keyboard/synthesizer touches. Itโ€™s quite ear-catching, even if it floats as opposed to being dynamic and โ€˜in your face.โ€™

Beyond the backdrop, Miller is on-point โ€“ heโ€™s in reflective mode. โ€œI spent the whole day in my head / Do a little spring cleaninโ€™,โ€ he raps on the first verse, continuing, โ€œIโ€™m always too busy dreaminโ€™, yeah / Well, maybe I should wake up instead.โ€ On the second, he asks, โ€œWhy I gotta build something beautiful just too go set in on fire?โ€ The third verse is quite chilling and eerie, with the key lyric, โ€œThereโ€™s a whole lot more for me waitinโ€™ on the other sideโ€ฆโ€ The centerpiece, of course, is the chorus. โ€œGood Newsโ€ is the total realization of Millerโ€™s talent.

7. LANY, โ€œbad newsโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ mamaโ€™s boy โ€ข ๐Ÿท Polydor โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

LANY, Mama's Boy [๐Ÿ“ท: Polydor]โ€œIโ€™ma make your mama love me / Every time you take me home.โ€ Well, thatโ€™s good ๐ŸŽ™ LANY โ€“ you definitely want to be in with your significant otherโ€™s parents.  โ€œIโ€™ma make your daddy hate me / Every time that weโ€™re alone.โ€ Well, likely, most parents wonโ€™t approve of the nasty going down in their midst โ€“ just saying.  So, the question is, is this โ€˜good newsโ€™ or ๐ŸŽต โ€œbad newsโ€ as the title of the song from ๐Ÿ’ฟ mamaโ€™s boy suggests?

Well, per ๐ŸŽ™ Paul Klein, โ€œIโ€™m no good for you / Baby, Iโ€™m bad news.โ€ The reasons for Kleinโ€™s bad news are various, despite the assets he brings to the relationship.  He has good intentions, but heโ€™s obviously busy, doubts his abilities to be a good boyfriend, and simply doesnโ€™t want to hurt her. Fair enough.  โ€œBad Newsโ€ is a sleekly produced pop joint, with ๐ŸŽ› Noah Conrad, ๐ŸŽ› King Henry, and ๐ŸŽ› Chad Copelin joining LANY behind the boards.

8. Black Eyed Peas, โ€œNews Todayโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ TRANSLATION โ€ข ๐Ÿท BEP Music LLC / Epic โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

Black Eyed Peas, TRANSLATION [๐Ÿ“ท: Epic]Keeping it 100, itโ€™s been a while since ๐ŸŽ™ Black Eyed Peas have been a force in pop music. It happens to the best of musicians, of course.  Post-Fergie in particular, BEP are just a different, less relevant group โ€“ no disrespect.  Anyways, in 2020, ๐ŸŽ™ will.i.am, ๐ŸŽ™ apl.de.ap, and ๐ŸŽ™ Taboo released a new album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ TRANSLATION.  Notably, the closing song, ๐ŸŽต โ€œNews Today,โ€ is a perfect fit for this newsworthy list.

On โ€œNews Today,โ€ Black Eyed Peas seem to come from a good and thoughtful place.  No, โ€œNews Todayโ€ has nothing to do with โ€œphunking with any heartsโ€ or โ€œlovely lady humps.โ€ It reflects on the devastation of the coronavirus pandemic that totally screwed 2020. Here, all members of the trio speak upon the happenings that changed the whole world, referencing how things blew up in New York and Italy, the deaths to vulnerable populations, and of course referencing โ€˜the hoaxโ€™ assertions.  While Iโ€™m not sure that Iโ€™d call โ€œNews Todayโ€ transcendent per se, again, BEPโ€™s hearts are definitely in the right place.

โ€œCOVID-19 got us on our knees
Got the temperature risinโ€™, 106 degrees.โ€

9. Leon Bridges, โ€œBad Bad Newsโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Good Thing โ€ข ๐Ÿท Columbia โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2018

Leon Bridges, Good Thing [๐Ÿ“ท: Columbia]โ€œThey tell me I was born to lose / But I made a good, good thing out of bad, bad news.โ€ ๐ŸŽต โ€œBad Bad Newsโ€ has the distinction of following ๐ŸŽต โ€œBet Ainโ€™t Worth the Handโ€, the ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning record from ๐Ÿ’ฟ Good ThingGood Thing, of course, is the sophomore album by contemporary soul standout ๐ŸŽ™ Leon Bridges. On โ€œBad Bad News,โ€ he contrasts the balladry of opener, opting for a mid-tempo joint that successfully fuses soul and jazz.

While โ€œBad Bad Newsโ€ does retain old-school vibes, Bridges also incorporates a dash of hip-hop, with the shout outs incorporated via call-and-response sections. Bridges sounds stellar, fully invested, delivering a balanced vocal performance.  For all the old souls out there, โ€œBad Bad Newsโ€ is anything but bad news โ€“ NO CAP.  Adding to the goodness are the horns and a jazzy guitar solo.  Definitely good news!

10. Anthony Hamilton, โ€œThe Newsโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ The Point of It All โ€ข ๐Ÿท RCA โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2008

Anthony Hamilton, The Point of it All [๐Ÿ“ท: RCA]๐ŸŽ™ Anthony Hamilton ranks among the best and most soulful contemporary R&B artists in the game.  His career hasnโ€™t been an easy one as heโ€™s had to put in incredibly hard work to achieve the success that he has.  He would finally breakthrough in 2003 with his platinum-certified album ๐Ÿ’ฟ Cominโ€™ From Where Iโ€™m From, thanks to an incredible single, ๐ŸŽต โ€œCharlene.โ€ While Hamilton has never quite attained the same degree of success again, the ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winner has been incredibly consistent with each album release and racked up some surefire R&B hits.  One of those hits is ๐ŸŽต โ€œThe News,โ€ which appears as the opener from his 2008 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ The Point of It All.

โ€œOoh, I think I seen it on the news
What am I to do?
Brothers dyinโ€™ from the blues
Send us someone with a song where we could sing along
Fill us all with a spirit where we could carry on.โ€

Sure, by 2008, the neo-soul movement had sadly lost some steam, but nobody gave Anthony Hamilton that message.  โ€œThe Newsโ€ initiates The Point of It All drenched in soul, thanks to marvelous production by ๐ŸŽ› Mark Batson.  Batson constructs a backdrop led by classy piano, robust bass, and horns โ€“ the whole soul aesthetic.  Of course, itโ€™s Hamilton that gives us โ€œThe Newsโ€ with those signature gritty, southern vocals. Worth noting, he deviates from his usual performance to some degree, blessing the listeners with an otherworldly falsetto.  Safe to say, Hamilton does the damn thing, with the best sections being the chorus, as well as the gospel-infused bridge section, where he and his backing choir assert passionately, โ€œBrothers gonโ€™ work it out.โ€ Now thatโ€™s the news, bruh!

11. Fleetwood Mac, โ€œSecond Hand Newsโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Rumours โ€ข ๐Ÿท Warner โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 1977

Fleetwood Mac, Rumours [๐Ÿ“ท: Warner]โ€œWhen times go bad / When times go rough / Wonโ€™t you lay me down in the tall grass / And let me do my stuff?โ€  Those are key lyrics from ๐ŸŽต โ€œSecond Hand News,โ€ the opening record from ๐Ÿ’ฟ RumoursRumours, of course is the ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning masterpiece by ๐ŸŽ™ Fleetwood Mac released back in 1977.  Despite its age, Rumours ranks among the most beloved and most popular albums of all time.

โ€œSecond Hand Newsโ€ is a bright, fun record.  Even so, matters of the heart are clearly in play, regardless of those infectious โ€œBow-bow-bow-bow-buh-buh-bowโ€ lyrics on the chorus.  On the third verse, ๐ŸŽ™Lindsey Buckingham makes it crystal clear that, โ€œI ainโ€™t gonna miss you when you go / Been down so long / Iโ€™ve been tossed around enoughโ€ (๐ŸŽ™Stevie Nicks sings backing vocals on this one).  So, the big question is, when does the news, specifically that โ€œsecond-hand newsโ€ come into play? Not until the end of this three-minute bop: โ€œIโ€™m just second-hand-news / Iโ€™m just second-hand news, yeah.โ€
