Problem, noun. 1a: A question raised for inquiry, consideration, or solutionā€¦ 2a: An intricate, unsettled questionā€¦ 2b: A source of perplexity, distress, or vexation.Ā  The aforementioned are just some of the definitions, via Merriam-Webster, for the word problem, the keyword on 11 MUST-HEAR, PROBLEMATIC PROBLEM SONGS.Ā  Lots of songs have been written explicitly and implicitly surrounding various problems ā€“ situations. In the case of this particular list, such problems will be explicit as the word MUST be featured in the song title.Ā  There are many more than 11 songs, but weā€™re going to keep things nice and tight here.Ā

So, who did we enlist to provide the tunes for 11 MUST-HEAR, PROBLEMATIC PROBLEM SONGS? Glad you asked! How about the likes of 6LACK, Ariana Grande (featuring Iggy Azalea, mind you), Delli Boe, Jay-Z, and Sabrina Claudio? There is no shortage of must-hear bops here, so without further ado, letā€™s jump right into these winning problematic songs, shall we!

1. Katy Perry, ā€œChampagne Problemsā€

Smile ā€¢Ā Capitol ā€¢Ā 2020

Katy Perry, Smile [Photo Credit: Capitol]ā€œI wanna see you soon as I wipe the crust from myā€…eyes / ā€˜Tilā€…the day Iā€…die, could you be the loveā€…of my life?ā€ Maybe? In the context of Smile, ā€œChampagne Problemsā€ keeps the album groovy, upbeat, and sleek AF in the production department.Ā  Although it is set in a minor key, Katy Perryā€™s ā€˜champagne problemsā€™ are actually pretty enjoyable on the ears, particularly the strings and namely, the catchy chorus.

ā€œā€˜Cause, baby all we got (All we got are)
Are champagne problems now (That's all we got)
ā€˜Cause, baby, all we got (All we got are)
Are champagne problems now.ā€

2. Delli Boe, ā€œBisexual Problemsā€

ā€œBisexual Problemsā€ ā€¢ Delli Boe ā€¢ 2018

Delli Boe, ā€œBisexual Problemsā€ [Photo Credit: Delli Boe]ā€œI want the dick, the pussy / I want everything, bitch what it isā€¦ā€ Well, the aforementioned lyrics from bisexual rapper Delli Boe are pretty self-explanatory, right? Right.Ā  Honestly, the title gives us a heads-up where Boe is going with ā€œBisexual Problems.ā€ Before listening, I figured that he was going to express how hard it is to be bisexual because you enjoy experiences with both men and women equally. That said, I didnā€™t expect Boe to be so blunt!

After the minimalist production establishes itself, so does Delli Boe, honestly.Ā  I mean, the opening lyrics from ā€œBisexual Problemsā€ are definitely ā€˜in your faceā€™:

ā€œEven though I like boys would ya still let me hit
If I eat yo pussy would ya still stuck my dick
Baby, Iā€™ll take yo soul if I lick on yo clit
You ainā€™t ever met a n***a who did it like this.ā€

Woo! It doesnā€™t stop there, but you can listen and read the rest of the sexually charged lyrics for yourself.Ā  Basically, he personally wonā€™t turn down experiences with guys or girls and he wants to know if youā€™d be cool with that. Add it to the collection LGBTQ+ šŸŒˆ songs if nothing else. Ā Ā Hopefully, Delli Boe being safe during these various sexual encounters. Wrap it up!

3. Ariana Grande, ā€œProblemā€

Ft. Iggy Azalea

My Everything ā€¢ Republic ā€¢Ā 2014

Ariana Grande, My Everything Ā©Ā RepublicAriana Grande truly stepped up her game on the infectious ā€œProblemā€ from sophomore album, My Everything.Ā  Furthermore, the Grammy-winner brought one of the yearā€™s hotter MCs in for the assist in Iggy Azalea.Ā  While Iggyā€™s star would ultimately fade (no shade), Grande had no PROBLEM getting bigger and better with each successive single and album ā€“ NO CAP.

Focusing on ā€œProblem,ā€ there is no shortage of swagger, absolutely sick vocals (Ari), and potent rhymes (Iggy). Notably, Grande was dating Big Sean at the time.Ā  He appears on the album, including providing the pivotal chant, ā€œI got one less problem without you,ā€ on the this undisputed, totally unproblematic urban-pop smash.

4. Arizona Zervas, ā€œDrinking Problemā€

Ft. 27CLUB

ā€œDrinking Problemā€ ā€¢Ā Arizona Zervas ā€¢Ā 2019

Arizona Zervas, ā€œDrinking Problemā€ [Photo Credit: Arizona Zervas]Arizona Zervas is best known for his hit single, ā€œRoxanneā€, which became a top-10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Itā€™s an extremely catchy song to be honest. Even so, Zervas has released a number of singles throughout 2019 and 2020. Ā Prior to ā€œRoxanneā€ in fact, Zervas had a ā€œDrinking Problem,ā€ which he enlisted 27CLUB to assist him with ā€“ well ā€“ rather on!

Apparently, Zonaā€™s girl accused him of having issues with alcohol. He denies them ā€“ well ā€“ sort of:

ā€œShe said I got a drinking problem
But I donā€™t got no problem drinking, though
I solve my problems with the bottle
And drink until I feel my face no more.ā€

So, he DOES in fact have a problem with the bottle, using it to cope essentially. Similarly, on the second verse, 27CLUB is in the same boat:

ā€œBad habits, I smoke it like Iā€™m a drug addict
I try to quit but seemingly Iā€™m not good at it
Fucked up rock star in a denim jacket
Bury me with some roses inside a leather casket.ā€

Ultimately, both artists are on the struggle bus and even if they try to curb the problem, they just canā€™t seem to. Now that, my friends, is indeed a problem.

5. Chance the Rapper, ā€œNo Problemā€

Ft. Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz

Coloring Book ā€¢ Chance the Rapper ā€¢Ā 2016Ā

Chance The Rapper, Coloring Book Ā© Chance The Rapperā€œYou donā€™t want no problems, want no problems with me!ā€ No indeed Chance the Rapper ā€“ no indeed! ā€œNo Problemā€ ranks among the gems from Coloring Book, the Grammy-winning mixtape by the rapper. Worth noting, of course, is the fact that Chance is an independent artist, something he references during ā€œNo Problemā€: ā€œIf one more label try to stop me / Itā€™s gonā€™ be some dreadhead n***as in ya lobby, huh, huh.ā€ There it is!

Chance The Rapper is assisted by Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz on this gem. The aforementioned chorus is catchy, infectious, and utterly sweet.Ā  All of the verses ā€“ one per rapper ā€“ definitely yield NO PROBLEM(s) whatsoever. Following Chanceā€™s verse, even the hella dumb 2 Chainz manages to rein himself in šŸ˜‚.Ā  Thatā€™s not to say he doesnā€™t say some silly stuff on the second verse such as ā€œRun shit like diarrhea (True)ā€ ā€“ lol. Of course, we get some sexual references from Lil Wayne, such as ā€œPretty bitches / Tippy toes around my crib in they robes, just their robes.ā€ No comment!

6. Nick Jonas, ā€œChampagne Problemsā€

Last Year Was Complicated ā€¢ Island ā€¢ 2016

Nick Jonas, Last Year Was Complicated Ā© Islandā€œHow many times have we been here before? / How many pieces have to break? / So many reasons not to celebrate / But I hate to see you cry, so letā€™s drink before goodbyeā€¦ā€ With Last Year Was Complicated, we get adult Nick Jonas ā€“ praise the lord! Sorry for the sacrilege, Father.Ā  Anyways ā€œChampagne Problems,ā€ the second track off the album, continues showcases the edge (and a minor key) following opener ā€œVoodooā€.

ā€œChampagne Problems,ā€ a song where misery is best drowned in alcohol (ā€œI hate to see you cry, so letā€™s drink before goodbyeā€), is by no means a miserable listen.Ā  Nick sounds looser than ever, despite the tension characterized within the record.

7. Sabrina Claudio, ā€œProblem with Youā€

Truth Is ā€¢ SC Entertainment ā€¢Ā 2019

Sabrina Claudio, Truth Is [Photo Credit: SC Entertainment]ā€œThe problem with you is / That I canā€™t get you off my mind / And I think about you all the time / Itā€™s your fault that I donā€™t feel right.ā€ R&B artist Sabrina Claudio blames him for the way she feels ā€“ he has that type of effect on her, period.Ā  Amazingly, even though Claudio sings in cool, calm, and collected fashion on ā€œProblem with You,ā€ sheā€™s quite potent on the Truth Is standout which appears as the albumā€™s ninth selection.

On the first verse, she begins by addressing her own problems, inquiring first, ā€œWas I cold?ā€ Similarly, on the second verse, she examines her own issues while being with him. Of course, she shifts to the source of the problems ā€“ HIM! On the pre-chorus, sheā€™s so infatuated and paranoid, sheā€™s quite possibly getting in her own way with her love:

ā€œLetā€™s talk about last night, you went to sleep
Didnā€™t even talk to me
You left me with questions, agonizing
You bring out the worst in me.ā€

On the bridge, she comes right out and blames him for putting her through this.Ā  Do we ever determine if heā€™s ā€˜no goodā€™ or if Sabrina is just scared, sheā€™s going to lose him? No, but this is a relatable song for anyone whoā€™s been in a relationship, particularly one where you question the commitment to some degree for whatever reason.

8. 6LACK, ā€œPRBLMSā€

FREE 6LACK ā€¢ Interscope ā€¢ 2016

6LACK, FREE 6LACK [Photo Credit: Interscope]Cutting straight to the chase, 6LACK definitely has problems on ā€œPRBLMSā€ ā€“ NO CAP! Heā€™s honest AF, meaning if you take offense to ample profanity, this blunt trap R&B record probably ainā€™t for you. Ā Itā€™s a pretty straightforward narrative though as the rapper/singer has played a role in making this girl high maintenance to the nth degree.Ā  ā€œI wanted a bitch who was down to earth,ā€ he sings on the first verse, continuing, ā€œBut she want the goddamn sky, uh / List of my problems / Got this one on my line that wonā€™t stop fucking callinā€™ / Itā€™s crazy I made her that way.ā€Ā

Even though 6LACK is at least partially responsible, heā€™s not fully committed to it 24/7. On the chorus he asserts, ā€œI got real shit to stress about, girl, I ainā€™t worried ā€˜bout shit,ā€ before admitting, ā€œSo, I found a new thang, Iā€™m not as lost as you think / Got plenty of queens in my hometown, all they need is drank and that good dank.ā€ Hereā€™s the thing. Ā Having a high maintenance boy- or girlfriend isnā€™t optimal. Ā That said, 6LACK also seems like heā€™s in a vicious cycle of problems because he indulges in various, um, ā€˜side piecesā€™ you might say.

9. A$AP Rocky, ā€œF**kinā€™ Problemsā€

Ft. Drake, 2 Chainz & Kendrick Lamar

Long.Live.A$AP ā€¢ RCA ā€¢ 2013

A$AP Rocky, Long. Live. A$AP Ā© RCAā€œI love bad bitches, thatā€™s my fuckinā€™ problem / And yeah I like to fuck, Iā€™ve got a fuckinā€™ problemā€¦ā€ ā€œF**kinā€™ Problemsā€ was DEFINITELY a big deal in 2013, period.Ā  It gave rapper A$AP Rocky a surefire hit from his debut album, Long.Live.A$AP.Ā  Aiding the explicit hit wasnā€™t only the visible f-bomb featured in the title, but also assists from a star-studded cast. 2 ChainzĀ takes the majority of the catchy, shameful, explicit chorus.Ā  As for Rocky, he delivers the first verse: ā€œAll these MFā€™s wanna dress like me / Put the chrome to your dome, make you ā€˜sweatā€™ like Keith.ā€

Drake brags on the second verse, ā€œAinā€™t heard my new album? Who you sleepinā€™ on? You should print the lyrics out and have a fuckinā€™ read alongā€¦ā€ Kendrick Lamar kills it on the final verse: ā€œShe eying me like a n***a donā€™t exist / Girl, I know you want this di-.ā€Ā  No ā€˜fuckinā€™ problemsā€™ with this mega hit!

10. Kevin Abstract, ā€œAmerican Problemā€

ARIZONA BABY ā€¢ RCA ā€¢Ā 2019

Kevin Abstract, ARIZONA BABY [Photo Credits: QUESTION EVERYTHING / RCA]ā€œI drink, I smoke, I drink, I smoke, I drink until I sleep.ā€ Now thatā€™s definitely could be a problem, though perhaps not specifically an ā€œAmerican Problemā€ (see what I did there?). Anyways, this playlistā€™s opener, ā€œAmerican Problem.ā€ actually appears near the end of ARIZONA BABY, the 2019 album by Kevin Abstract of BROCKHAMPTON fame (Iridescence is a must-hear album btw).Ā  ARIZONA BABY follows Abstractā€™s 2016 debut album, American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story. So, what exactly does make Abstract an ā€˜American problem?ā€™ Wellā€¦

ā€œAmerican Problemā€ finds Abstract reflecting on his past, as well as his current reality.Ā  Part of that includes being gay, something that has been a prevalent theme in his previous work, not to mention the work of BROCKHAMPTON. On the second verse, he states, ā€œAnd all my girlfriends, they tell me / ā€˜Well, you wouldā€™ve been better if you picked someone who was just like youā€™.ā€ He also goes on to say:

ā€œI thought a brother was cut...
I was a flaming faggot, thatā€™s when the principal called me
Not to my face, but I felt when I was stuck in his office
Iā€™m just a, Iā€™m just another American problem...ā€

Quite a unique listen, the production work is distinct, while Abstractā€™s vocals are pitch-shifted at times, and thereā€™s singing and rapping. ā€œAmerican Problemā€ previously appeared on 15 Must-Hear, All-American Songs and A Compendium Comprised of 100 Notable LGBTQ+ Songs.

11. Jay-Z, ā€œ99 Problemsā€

The Black Album ā€¢Ā Roc Nation ā€¢ 2003

Jay-z, The Black Album [Photo Credit: Roc-A-Fella]ā€œIf youā€™re having girl problems, I feel bad for you, son / I got 99 problems, but a bitch ainā€™t one.ā€ Woo! There is an assortment of problematic songs that wonā€™t be covered on this particular list.Ā  That said, Jay-Z earns the final spot with ā€œ99 Problems.ā€ The classic appears on the rapperā€™s fantastic 2003 album, The Black Album, which Iā€™d rank at/near the top of his discography. The aforementioned hook ā€“ lifted from an Ice-T single ā€“ has become a staple of pop culture, period! I can almost guarantee, most will associate it with Jay as opposed to Ice-T, whether thatā€™s fair or not.

ā€œ99 Problemsā€ features some stellar rapping from Hov with plenty of ā€˜real talk.ā€™ Heā€™s confident and definitely sticks up both middle fingers to the haters.Ā  Perhaps my favorite example: ā€œIā€™m like, ā€˜Fuck critics, you can kiss my whole asshole!ā€™ā€ He doesnā€™t stop there, as he tells a story of being stopped by ā€˜Jakeā€™ (white police officer) on the second verse, which has a number of different layers to unpack in all honesty. The third verse is colorful as well, with ample wordplay and even some lines that make you scratch your head.Ā  What I can safely say is that thereā€™s no problems whatsoever with ā€œ99 Problems.ā€ Produced by Rick Rubin with a rap-rock backdrop and some great samples, ā€œ99 Problemsā€ is iconic.
