The fire is metaphorical, not physical! It isnβt the first time the flames have graced The Musical Hype (see π§ 11 Brilliant Songs Fueled by Fire (2021)), but itβs been a long, long time! π§ 11 Epic Songs Filled with Fire features music courtesy of π Alicia Keys, π Black Pumas, π Katy Perry, π Lil Uzi Vert, andΒ Ohio Players among others. So, without further ado, letβs jump right into this fire π₯, shall we? BURN, BABY BURN π₯!!!
1. Ohio Players, βFireβΒ
πΏ Fire β’ π· UMG Recordings, Inc. β’ π 1974
βCause when youβre hot, youβre hot, you really shoot your shot / Youβre dynamite child, yeah.β Oh, snap π«°! βFire π₯.β WOO! π΅ βFireβ by π Ohio Players is a fiery π₯ 1970s funk classic, PERIOD.Β Notably, this gem from πΏ Fire (1974) peaked at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.Β The record was penned by πΌβ Clarence Satchell, James Williams, Leroy βSugarfootβ Bonner, Marshall Jones, Marvin Pierce, Ralph Middlebrooks, and William Beck. Ohio Players produced this energetic joint which speaks for itself.
While βFireβ does speak for itself, what makes it utter fire π₯ for Ohio Players? EVERYTHING! Leroy Sugarfoot Bonner serves up mean vocals filled with nuance and expression. He was a one-of-a-kind vocalist, something βFireβ confirms.Β Lyrically, the song is entertaining to the nth degree: βThe way you walk and talk really sets me off / To a four-alarm π¨, child, yes it does.β Ooh-wee! Bonner titillates when he sings, βWhen you shake what you got, and girl, youβve got a lot π / You really somethinβ, child, yes you are.βΒ Supporting Bonnerβs lead and the ear-catching lyrics is a marvelous instrumental.Β The groove cooks π§βπ³ without a doubt.Β The guitar πΈ is rad, the bass line anchors, and the horns pack a serious bite.Β 50 years later, π΅ βFireβ continues to burn, burn, burn, baby!Β Β

2. Dolly Parton, βWorld On Fireββ―β―Β
πΏ Rockstar β’ π· Butterfly / Big Machine Label Group β’ π 2023β―Β β―Β
According to the iconic π Dolly Parton π€©, we live in a π΅ βWorld On Fireβ. In the promo single from her ROCK album, πΏ Rockstar, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee asserts in the chorus, βLiar, liar, the worldβs on fire / What you gonna do when it all burns down? / Fire, fire, burninβ higher / Still got time to turn it all around.β βWorld On Fireβ is one of the original songs from Rockstar, which is comprised of numerous covers and collaborations with numerous big-time musicians.β―β―β―Β
β―β―β―Β
βWorld On Fireβ finds Dolly Parton sounding marvelous, as always. Well into her seventies, Partonβs voice sounds as distinct, effective, and fresh as ever.β― Assertive in her performance, you buy what Dolly sells regarding the state of the world. In the first verse, Parton asserts, βEverybodyβs trippinβ over this or that / What we gonna do when we all fall flat?β She has a point β we live in divisive, polarizing times.β― In the second verse, the man upstairs comes into the picture: βWhen did we lose βIn God we trust?β / God almighty, what we gonna do? / If God ainβt listeninβ and weβre deaf too.β Parton even slides in some profanity, crying foul regarding βGreedy politicians, present and past / They wouldnβt know the truth if it bit βem in the ass.β Real talk.β― Parton supports the assertion that the world is on fire, even if solving the problem is the taller task. Well written and well produced, this rock version of Parton, which does not alienate her country fan base, sounds good π€.β―β―β―Β

3. Lil Uzi Vert, βFire Alarmβ (Ft. Snow Strippers)Β
πΏ Pink Tape β’ π· Generation Now / Atlantic β’ π 2023
βAinβt no bitch never heard of me / I fuck hoes off burgundy, she said, βCan I get a Birkin, please.ββ Ooh-wee! π΅ βFire Alarmβ appears as the 16th track on πΏ Pink Tape, the 2023 album by π Grammy-nominated rapper, π Lil Uzi Vert. Notably, Lil Uzi Vert is assisted by π Snow Strippers. Specifically, π Tatiana Schwaninger provides vocals in the intro (βI canβt be myself, see myself, slice myself / I canβt sell my soul, clean my soul, slice my soulβ) and the interlude, while π Graham Perez produces alongside Don Cannon.Β The production is ear-catching, featuring two samples: π΅ βStressβ by π Justice and π΅ βSirenβ from π¦ Silent Hill. The backdrop is fuel β½οΈ for Uzi Vertβs fire π₯ which is unapologetic AF. The substance is lacking for the rapper, well, unless you consider the likes of βTakinβ these pills, and these pills got me outer spaceβ being deep. There are multiple references to drip, and he freely uses the word bitch, sigh. βI know some bitches addicted to soda,β he asserts in the second verse, later, mentioning bitches again sexually: βShe gave me head like that bitch got diploma.β βFire Alarmβ is what it is β a three-minute banger that goes hella dumb.
Β
4. Rick James, βFire and Desireβ (Ft. Teena Marie)Β
πΏ Street Songs β’ π· UMG Recordings, Inc. β’ π 1981β―Β
βIβve got a new lady now / And itβs a little different than when I was with you,β the late, great R&B singer/songwriter, π Rick James (1948 β 2004) asserts in the intro of π΅ βFire And Desireβ. βFire And Desireβ appears on Jamesβ platinum certified, 1981 album, πΏ Street Songs. He expounds on the seven-minute-plus, sixth track, βI think of how you changed me with your love and your sensitivity.ββ― Although James is with someone new, he touts how much his ex-girlfriend changed him β taught him how to love.β― In the first verse, he sings about how bad he treated his girlfriends: βI was cold as ice long ago, baby, baby / I wasnβt very, very, very nice, you know / Sugar, sugar, sugar / Then I kissed your lips.β Notably,β― the centerpiece of βFire And Desireβ is the chorus, which finds James showing gratitude to his ex for teaching him how to love and be a better man:β―β―β―Β β―Β
βAnd you turned on my fire, babyβ―Β
And you burn me up within your flameβ―Β
Took me a little higherβ―Β
Made me live againβ―Β
You turned on my fire, babyβ―Β
Then you showed me what a love could doβ―Β
Fire and desire, babyβ―Β
Feel it coming throughβ―Β
And I thank you baby.ββ―Β
Rick James sounds fantastic, showing off his robust, soulful instrument.β― As electrifying as he is himself,β―penning, producing, and singing this epic ballad, he is joined by another late legendary R&B artist, π Teena Marie (1956 β 2010). Notably, Marie and James dated briefly. Clearly, the chemistry is awesome between the two, specifically in the collaborative chorus and outro.β― Marie doesnβt enter until well into the song (second verse), flaunting an exquisite tone and an awe-inspiring range.β― When Teena sings, it sounds effortless and utterly celestial.β― Like Rick, she attests to how he made her love better.β― Beyond the thoughtful, love-oriented songwriting, the sound of π΅ βFire And Desireβ is gorgeous including the rhythm section, strings π», and vibraphone.β― Honestly, this 80s gem π deserved much more attention on the charts.β―β―Β

5. Colm R. McGuinness, βHellfireβ Β
π΅ βHellfireβ β’ π· Colm R. McGuinness β’ π 2023
Ah! It is always exciting to hear various musicians cover some of the greatest songs from Disney animated films.β― The song from π¦β―The Hunchback of Notre Dame that draws the most attention is the dark, hellish, π΅ βHellfireβ, which in the 1996 animated film, is paired with βHeavenβs Light.β While the βHeavenβs Lightβ finds Quasimodo bringing optimism, itβs Judge Claude Frolloβs lustful βHellfireβ that makes us question how The Hunchback of Notre Dame ended up being a G-rated childrenβs movie.β― Anyways, talented Irish singer/composer π Colm McGuinness (COLM is pronounced COLUMN) delivers an alluring take on one of Disneyβs darkest music classics.β―
Β
McGuinnessβ π΅ βHellfireβ fittingly begins with the haunting Latin text featured in the original. It retains the theatrical flair, but also has a hint of the spirit of rock π€.β― Colmβs tone is otherworldly β quite distinct.β― He truly catches the ear π early on, channeling his best Judge Claude Frollo with his deep, passionate, and robust instrument. Colm sings with incredible expression, grit, and power πͺ. This is one instance where masculinity, via his sound, is #WINNING.β― Watching the music video of the cover, you canβt take your eyes off of Colm, who puts his all into these damning lyrics β he truly sells it like champ. The dramatic instrumental only fuels β½οΈ the fire π₯, making us Disney kids reminisce back in fondness to one of the best villainous songs of all time.β―β―Β

6. The Pointer Sisters, βFireβ Β
πΏ Energy β’ π· Sony Music Entertainment β’ π 1978Β
βMy words say split π / But my words they lie π€₯ / βCause when we kiss π, ooh, fire.β Fire π₯, indeed, π The Pointer Sisters! π΅ βFireβ marks one of the biggest hits by the iconic, π Grammy-winning,Β sister group comprised of ποΈ Anita Pointer (1948 β 2022), June Pointer (1953 β 2006), and Ruth Pointer (1946 β ). Anita sings led on this gem, which performed superbly on the pop charts, peaking at no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979 (it debuted in 1978).Β It should be noted that βFireβ is NOT an original π€―. The Pointer Sisters made a πΌ β Bruce Springsteen song, originally intended for π Elvis Presley, and recorded by π Robert Gordon and Springsteen himself, a gargantuan hit. In addition to its chart accolades, βFireβ was certified gold by the RIAA. Likewise, the parent album, πΏ Energy, was also certified gold.Β
The premise of βFireβ is matters of the heart β L-O-V-E β€οΈ. Essentially, Anita Pointer is giving mixed signals. She doesnβt like him, but she does, as the excerpted lyrics suggest. Prior to those fiery lines, in the first verse, Anita sings, βYouβre pullinβ me close / I just say no / I say I donβt like it / But you know Iβm a liar.β Oh, Pinocchio π€₯! Similarly, in the second verse, she asserts, βI say I wanna be alone / I say I donβt love you / But you know Iβm a liar.βΒ The lyrics are self-explanatory β easy to follow and ultimately, enjoyable.Β Furthermore, the vocals by Anita as well as her sisters are strong β harmonious.Β Furthermore, the backdrop is distinct.Β This is technically an R&B, record, but, the backdrop also has pop/rock influence, which makes it stand out.Β The guitar πΈ, organ, and tambourine are some of the most delicious instruments appearing on the track π€€. The Pointer Sistersβ π΅ βFireβ is DEFINITELY fire π₯π₯π₯.

7. Jerry Lee Lewis, βGreat Balls of Fireβ Β
πΏ The Essential Jerry Lee Lewis: The Sun Sessions β’ π· Sun Entertainment Corporation β’ π 2013
βKiss me, baby / Mmm, it feels good / Hold me, baby / Well, Iβm off to love you like a lover should.β So, π Jerry Lee Lewis, tell us, how exactly should a lover love π€?Β Judging by the 1950s classic, π΅ βGreat Balls of Fireβ, incredibly passionately. By 21st century standards, βGreat Balls of Fireβ is incredibly tame.Β Yes, the innuendo is ripe β βIβm real nervous, but it sure is fun / Come on, baby / You drive me crazyβ β but itβs not as if Lewis explicitly mentions S-E-X.Β Still, for the conservative 1950s, βGreat Balls of Fireβ raised eyebrows, yet peaked at no. 2 (predating the Billboard Hot 100) in the US and no. 1 in the UK πͺ.Β
Perhaps what is more controversial than this risquΓ© song is Jerry Lee Lewis himself.Β Sure, the fact that Lewis asserts βI chew my nails and I twiddle my thumbsβ in either anticipation for sex or just being hot and bothered was progressive for the time, more disturbing are the many controversies the late icon was part of.Β The controversy that coincides with the popularity of βGreat Balls of Fire,β specifically in the UK, is the revelation that Lewis, at the time 22, married his second cousin, who was 13… YIKES! This of course led to Lewisβ promising career going down the tube.Β Furthermore, for some folks, it might change your perception of the hot and bothered π΅ βGreat Balls of Fireβ.Β Lewis clearly had his fair share of issues β an understatement β but hard to deny this song right here is a surefire, rock and roll classic.Β Β Β

8. Alicia Keys, βGirl on Fireβ Β
πΏ Girl on Fire β’ π· RCA β’ π 2012Β
βSheβs just a girl and sheβs on fire π₯,β π Grammy winning R&B singer/songwriter π Alicia Keys asserts on π΅ βGirl On Fireβ. βGirl On Fireβ marks the crowning achievement from her 2012 LP, πΏ Girl on Fire. Even though the girl which Keys sings about has the adversity of a crazy world against her, βShe knows she can fly away.β Why? Well, because βSheβs not backinβ downβ and, of course, βThis girl is on fire!β βGirl On Fireβ just missed the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at no. 11. It is worth noting, on the Inferno version, π Nicki Minaj assists, performing the first and fourth verses (βDear God, if youβre here God / Make the fire disappear when they stare Godβ).β―
Regardless of the mix, Nicki or no Nicki, Alicia Keys is the star of the show.β― She sings well, painting a beautiful portrait of a strong, determined woman πͺ.β― The bridge marks a truly fabulous moment, where Keys makes it clear that this girl doesnβt show her flaws or insecurities in the least.β―β―Β β―Β
βEverybody stands, as she goes byβ―Β
βCause they can see the flame thatβs in her eyesβ―Β
Watch her when sheβs lighting up the nightβ―β―Β
Nobody knows that sheβs a lonely girlβ―Β
And itβs a lonely worldβ―Β
But she gonβ let it burn, baby, burn, baby.ββ―β―Β
π΅ βGirl On Fireβ speaks to women β empowerment, baby β but it should also be admired by men, too.β― A strong woman deserves the admiration and respect of all πͺ!β―

9. Black Pumas, βFireβΒ
πΏ Black Pumas β’ π· ATO β’ π 2019
βGot a lover on my mind / That keeps me wanting, steady wanting more.β Ooh wee, thatβs nothing short of β wait for it β FIRE π₯π₯π₯! π΅ βFireβ appears as the fourth track on πΏ Black Pumas, the 2019, debut album by π Grammy-nominated duo, π Black Pumas. π Eric Burton and π Adrian Quesada put their foot into this soulful gem.Β Burton blesses us with utterly sublime vocals, while Quesada puts in work on the guitar πΈ and behind the boards ποΈ πͺ.
With the fire π₯ implied on βFire,β when does Eric Burton explicitly sing about it? That would be in the chorus. βThereβs a fire π₯, call the fireman π¨βπ / If youβre in pain, baby, call a doctor,β he sings, continuing, βDonβt be afraid to say, βI need youβ / I will understand.β Hmm, clearly, this is a different kind of fire π₯! In the third verse, Burton confesses, βOh, I long for your lovinβ, I canβt get enough / When you tell me I can be there when you love again.β WORD! All told, this four-minute plus joint rocks π€!

10. Katy Perry, βFireworkββ―Β
πΏ Teenage Dream β’ π· Capitol β’ π 2010
Baby, do you know what you are? βYouβre a firework π!β WOO! Itβs hard to believe that the π Katy Perry classic, π΅ βFireworkβ, arrived way back in 2010! Perry experienced the biggest success of her career, as her πΏ Teenage Dream album was chocked-full of hits. βFireworkβ spent four weeks at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, tallying 39 weeks total on the charts.β― The song features marvelous production (π Sandy Vee and StarGate), tuneful melody, a strong vocal from Perry, and most of all, inspiring, memorable, and uplifting songwriting (Perry and πΌ β Ester Dean join the production team as writers).β―β―Β
The inspirational, uplifting nature of βFireworkβ is what has always stood out to me personally.β― In the first verse, Perry paints a picture of feeling worthless, and going through ample adversity. βDo you ever feel already buried deep?β she sings, adding, βSix feet under screams, but no one seems to hear a thing.ββ― Following these negative feelings and vibes, Perry shifts all things inspiring.β― In the pre-chorus, she tells the hopeless, βYou just gotta ignite the light / And let it shine / Just own the night / Like the Fourth of July.β Why? ββCause baby, youβre a firework / Come on show βem what youβre worth / Make βem go, βAwe, aw, aweβ / As you shoot across the sky-y-y!β WOO! The second verse, following the epic chorus, embraces this newfound hope and fearlessness, contrasting with the mopey first verse.β― Katy encourages us to open a new door! Even though the chorus is the sugar honey iced tea on this bombastic encouraging pop joint, the bridge must be mentioned in all their brightness! βBoom, boom, boom / Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon / Itβs always been inside of you, you, youβ¦β Just remember, whether itβs The fourth of July or nah, YOU own every night, darlings!β―β―β―Β

11. Johnny Cash, βRing of Fireβ Β
πΏ The Essential Johnny Cash β’ π· Sony Music Entertainment β’ π 2002β―β―Β
βLove is a burning thing / And it makes a fiery ring.β Indeed, π Johnny Cash (1932 β 2003), indeed.β― βBound by wild desire / I fell into a ring of fire.β Dang! π΅ βRing of Fireβ is one of the most iconic country songs of all-time, PERIOD.β― In the hands of Mr. Cash, βRing of Fireβ peaked at no. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963, one of two top-20 hits by the iconic country musician. The country standard was penned by Cashβs eventual second wife, πΌ β June Carter Cash and Merle Kilgore. Carter Cash didnβt write it for Cash, but rather her sister, Anita Carter, per Alex Baker of Fender. Unsurprisingly, early in π Grammy history, at the 6th Annual Grammy Awards, Cash earned his first Grammy nomination for Best Country & Western Recording.β―Β
So, what makes βRing of Fireβ the sugar honey iced tea? The theme and songwriting go a long way, particularly the catchy chorus.β― Sing along if you know it!β―β―β―Β
βI fell into a burning ring of fireβ―Β
I went down, down, downβ―β―Β
And the flames went higherβ―Β
And it burns, burns, burns,β―β―Β
The ring of fireβ―Β
The ring of fire.ββ―β―β―Β
Of course, those expressive, nuanced vocals of Johnny Cash are the biggest attraction πͺ. That baritone is nothing short of amazing.β― Also, throw in the mariachi horns πΊβ― and the backdrop is distinct and sweet.β― The groove is infectious, reminding us just how fabulous the country/western music of the past is.β― Still, the focal point is the icon himself, Johnny Cash, who made π΅ βRing of Fireβ a gargantuan hit. The greatness of the song speaks for itself.β―β―β―Β
