So, without further ado, let’s jump right into this fire πŸ”₯, shall we? BURN, BABY BURN πŸ”₯!!!

1. Ohio Players, β€œFire”

πŸ’Ώ Fire β€’ 🏷 UMG Recordings, Inc. β€’ πŸ—“ 1974

Ohio Players, Fire [πŸ“·: UMG Recordings, Inc.]β€œCause when you’re hot, you’re hot, you really shoot your shot / You’re dynamite child, yeah.” Oh, snap 🫰! β€œFire πŸ”₯.” WOO! 🎡 β€œFire” by πŸŽ™ Ohio Players is a fiery πŸ”₯ 1970s funk classic, PERIOD.Β  Notably, this gem from πŸ’Ώ Fire (1974) peaked at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.Β  The record was penned by 🎼✍ Clarence Satchell, James Williams, Leroy β€œSugarfoot” Bonner, Marshall Jones, Marvin Pierce, Ralph Middlebrooks, and William Beck. Ohio Players produced this energetic joint which speaks for itself.

While β€œFire” does speak for itself, what makes it utter fire πŸ”₯ for Ohio Players? EVERYTHING! Leroy Sugarfoot Bonner serves up mean vocals filled with nuance and expression. He was a one-of-a-kind vocalist, something β€œFire” confirms.Β  Lyrically, the song is entertaining to the nth degree: β€œThe way you walk and talk really sets me off / To a four-alarm 🚨, child, yes it does.” Ooh-wee! Bonner titillates when he sings, β€œWhen you shake what you got, and girl, you’ve got a lot πŸ‘ / You really somethin’, child, yes you are.”  Supporting Bonner’s lead and the ear-catching lyrics is a marvelous instrumental.Β  The groove cooks πŸ§‘β€πŸ³ without a doubt.Β  The guitar 🎸 is rad, the bass line anchors, and the horns pack a serious bite.Β  50 years later, 🎡 β€œFire” continues to burn, burn, burn, baby!Β Β

2. Dolly Parton, β€œWorld On Fire”

πŸ’Ώ Rockstar β€’ 🏷 Butterfly / Big Machine Label Group β€’ πŸ—“ 2023β€―Β β€―Β

Dolly Parton, Rockstar [πŸ“·: Butterfly / Big Machine Label Group]According to the iconic πŸŽ™ Dolly Parton 🀩, we live in a 🎡 β€œWorld On Fire”. In the promo single from her ROCK album, πŸ’Ώ Rockstar, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee asserts in the chorus, β€œLiar, liar, the world’s on fire / What you gonna do when it all burns down? / Fire, fire, burnin’ higher / Still got time to turn it all around.” β€œWorld On Fire” is one of the original songs from Rockstar, which is comprised of numerous covers and collaborations with numerous big-time musicians.β€―β€―β€―Β

β€―β€―β€―Β

β€œWorld On Fire” finds Dolly Parton sounding marvelous, as always. Well into her seventies, Parton’s voice sounds as distinct, effective, and fresh as ever.β€― Assertive in her performance, you buy what Dolly sells regarding the state of the world. In the first verse, Parton asserts, β€œEverybody’s trippin’ over this or that / What we gonna do when we all fall flat?” She has a point – we live in divisive, polarizing times.β€― In the second verse, the man upstairs comes into the picture: β€œWhen did we lose β€˜In God we trust?’ / God almighty, what we gonna do? / If God ain’t listenin’ and we’re deaf too.” Parton even slides in some profanity, crying foul regarding β€œGreedy politicians, present and past / They wouldn’t know the truth if it bit β€˜em in the ass.” Real talk.β€― Parton supports the assertion that the world is on fire, even if solving the problem is the taller task. Well written and well produced, this rock version of Parton, which does not alienate her country fan base, sounds good 🀘.β€―β€―β€―Β

3. Lil Uzi Vert, β€œFire Alarm” (Ft. Snow Strippers)Β

πŸ’Ώ Pink Tape β€’ 🏷 Generation Now / Atlantic β€’ πŸ“… 2023

Lil Uzi Vert, Pink Tape [πŸ“·: Generation Now / Atlantic]β€œAin’t no bitch never heard of me / I fuck hoes off burgundy, she said, β€˜Can I get a Birkin, please.’” Ooh-wee! 🎡 β€œFire Alarm” appears as the 16th track on πŸ’Ώ Pink Tape, the 2023 album by πŸ† Grammy-nominated rapper, πŸŽ™ Lil Uzi Vert. Notably, Lil Uzi Vert is assisted by πŸŽ™ Snow Strippers. Specifically, πŸŽ™ Tatiana Schwaninger provides vocals in the intro (β€œI can’t be myself, see myself, slice myself / I can’t sell my soul, clean my soul, slice my soul”) and the interlude, while πŸŽ› Graham Perez produces alongside Don Cannon.Β  The production is ear-catching, featuring two samples: 🎡 β€œStress” by πŸŽ™ Justice and 🎡 β€œSiren” from 🎦 Silent Hill. The backdrop is fuel ⛽️ for Uzi Vert’s fire πŸ”₯ which is unapologetic AF. The substance is lacking for the rapper, well, unless you consider the likes of β€œTakin’ these pills, and these pills got me outer space” being deep. There are multiple references to drip, and he freely uses the word bitch, sigh. β€œI know some bitches addicted to soda,” he asserts in the second verse, later, mentioning bitches again sexually: β€œShe gave me head like that bitch got diploma.” β€œFire Alarm” is what it is – a three-minute banger that goes hella dumb.

4. Rick James, β€œFire and Desire” (Ft. Teena Marie)Β

πŸ’Ώ Street Songs β€’ 🏷 UMG Recordings, Inc. β€’ πŸ—“ 1981β€―Β

Rick James, Street Songs [πŸ“·: UMG Recordings, Inc.]β€œI’ve got a new lady now / And it’s a little different than when I was with you,” the late, great R&B singer/songwriter, πŸŽ™ Rick James (1948 – 2004) asserts in the intro of 🎡 β€œFire And Desire”. β€œFire And Desire” appears on James’ platinum certified, 1981 album, πŸ’Ώ Street Songs. He expounds on the seven-minute-plus, sixth track, β€œI think of how you changed me with your love and your sensitivity.”  Although James is with someone new, he touts how much his ex-girlfriend changed him – taught him how to love.β€― In the first verse, he sings about how bad he treated his girlfriends: β€œI was cold as ice long ago, baby, baby / I wasn’t very, very, very nice, you know / Sugar, sugar, sugar / Then I kissed your lips.” Notably,β€― the centerpiece of β€œFire And Desire” is the chorus, which finds James showing gratitude to his ex for teaching him how to love and be a better man:β€―β€―β€―Β β€―Β

β€œAnd you turned on my fire, babyβ€―Β

And you burn me up within your flameβ€―Β

Took me a little higherβ€―Β

Made me live againβ€―Β

You turned on my fire, babyβ€―Β

Then you showed me what a love could doβ€―Β

Fire and desire, babyβ€―Β

Feel it coming throughβ€―Β

And I thank you baby.”

Rick James sounds fantastic, showing off his robust, soulful instrument.β€― As electrifying as he is himself,β€―penning, producing, and singing this epic ballad, he is joined by another late legendary R&B artist, πŸŽ™ Teena Marie (1956 – 2010). Notably, Marie and James dated briefly. Clearly, the chemistry is awesome between the two, specifically in the collaborative chorus and outro.β€― Marie doesn’t enter until well into the song (second verse), flaunting an exquisite tone and an awe-inspiring range.β€― When Teena sings, it sounds effortless and utterly celestial.β€― Like Rick, she attests to how he made her love better.β€― Beyond the thoughtful, love-oriented songwriting, the sound of 🎡 β€œFire And Desire” is gorgeous including the rhythm section, strings 🎻, and vibraphone.β€― Honestly, this 80s gem πŸ’Ž deserved much more attention on the charts.β€―β€―Β

5. Colm R. McGuinness, β€œHellfire” Β

🎡 β€œHellfire” β€’ 🏷 Colm R. McGuinness β€’ πŸ—“ 2023

Colm R. McGuinness, Hellfire [πŸ“·: Colm R. McGuinness]Ah! It is always exciting to hear various musicians cover some of the greatest songs from Disney animated films.β€― The song from πŸŽ¦β€―The Hunchback of Notre Dame that draws the most attention is the dark, hellish, 🎡 β€œHellfire”, which in the 1996 animated film, is paired with β€œHeaven’s Light.” While the β€œHeaven’s Light” finds Quasimodo bringing optimism, it’s Judge Claude Frollo’s lustful β€œHellfire” that makes us question how The Hunchback of Notre Dame ended up being a G-rated children’s movie.β€― Anyways, talented Irish singer/composer πŸŽ™ Colm McGuinness (COLM is pronounced COLUMN) delivers an alluring take on one of Disney’s darkest music classics.β€―

Β

McGuinness’ 🎡 β€œHellfire” fittingly begins with the haunting Latin text featured in the original. It retains the theatrical flair, but also has a hint of the spirit of rock 🀘.β€― Colm’s tone is otherworldly – quite distinct.β€― He truly catches the ear πŸ‘‚ early on, channeling his best Judge Claude Frollo with his deep, passionate, and robust instrument. Colm sings with incredible expression, grit, and power πŸ’ͺ. This is one instance where masculinity, via his sound, is #WINNING.β€― Watching the music video of the cover, you can’t take your eyes off of Colm, who puts his all into these damning lyrics – he truly sells it like champ. The dramatic instrumental only fuels ⛽️ the fire πŸ”₯, making us Disney kids reminisce back in fondness to one of the best villainous songs of all time.β€―β€―Β

6. The Pointer Sisters, β€œFire” Β

πŸ’Ώ Energy β€’ 🏷 Sony Music Entertainment β€’ πŸ“… 1978Β

The Pointer Sisters, Energy [πŸ“·: Sony Music Entertainment]β€œMy words say split πŸ’” / But my words they lie πŸ€₯ / β€˜Cause when we kiss 😘, ooh, fire.” Fire πŸ”₯, indeed, πŸŽ™ The Pointer Sisters! 🎡 β€œFire” marks one of the biggest hits by the iconic, πŸ† Grammy-winning,Β sister group comprised of πŸŽ™οΈ Anita Pointer (1948 – 2022), June Pointer (1953 – 2006), and Ruth Pointer (1946 – ). Anita sings led on this gem, which performed superbly on the pop charts, peaking at no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979 (it debuted in 1978).Β  It should be noted that β€œFire” is NOT an original 🀯. The Pointer Sisters made a 🎼 ✍ Bruce Springsteen song, originally intended for πŸŽ™ Elvis Presley, and recorded by πŸŽ™ Robert Gordon and Springsteen himself, a gargantuan hit. In addition to its chart accolades, β€œFire” was certified gold by the RIAA. Likewise, the parent album, πŸ’Ώ Energy, was also certified gold.Β

The premise of β€œFire” is matters of the heart – L-O-V-E ❀️. Essentially, Anita Pointer is giving mixed signals. She doesn’t like him, but she does, as the excerpted lyrics suggest. Prior to those fiery lines, in the first verse, Anita sings, β€œYou’re pullin’ me close / I just say no / I say I don’t like it / But you know I’m a liar.” Oh, Pinocchio πŸ€₯! Similarly, in the second verse, she asserts, β€œI say I wanna be alone / I say I don’t love you / But you know I’m a liar.”  The lyrics are self-explanatory – easy to follow and ultimately, enjoyable.Β  Furthermore, the vocals by Anita as well as her sisters are strong – harmonious.Β  Furthermore, the backdrop is distinct.Β  This is technically an R&B, record, but, the backdrop also has pop/rock influence, which makes it stand out.Β  The guitar 🎸, organ, and tambourine are some of the most delicious instruments appearing on the track 🀀. The Pointer Sisters’ 🎡 β€œFire” is DEFINITELY fire πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯.

7. Jerry Lee Lewis, β€œGreat Balls of Fire” Β

πŸ’Ώ The Essential Jerry Lee Lewis: The Sun Sessions β€’ 🏷 Sun Entertainment Corporation β€’ πŸ—“ 2013

Jerry Lee Lewis, The Essential Jerry Lee Lewis: The Sun Sessions [πŸ“·: Sun Entertainment Corporation]β€œKiss me, baby / Mmm, it feels good / Hold me, baby / Well, I’m off to love you like a lover should.” So, πŸŽ™ Jerry Lee Lewis, tell us, how exactly should a lover love πŸ€”?Β  Judging by the 1950s classic, 🎡 β€œGreat Balls of Fire”, incredibly passionately. By 21st century standards, β€œGreat Balls of Fire” is incredibly tame.Β  Yes, the innuendo is ripe – β€œI’m real nervous, but it sure is fun / Come on, baby / You drive me crazy” – but it’s not as if Lewis explicitly mentions S-E-X.Β  Still, for the conservative 1950s, β€œGreat Balls of Fire” raised eyebrows, yet peaked at no. 2 (predating the Billboard Hot 100) in the US and no. 1 in the UK πŸ’ͺ.Β

Perhaps what is more controversial than this risquΓ© song is Jerry Lee Lewis himself.Β  Sure, the fact that Lewis asserts β€œI chew my nails and I twiddle my thumbs” in either anticipation for sex or just being hot and bothered was progressive for the time, more disturbing are the many controversies the late icon was part of.Β  The controversy that coincides with the popularity of β€œGreat Balls of Fire,” specifically in the UK, is the revelation that Lewis, at the time 22, married his second cousin, who was 13… YIKES! This of course led to Lewis’ promising career going down the tube.Β  Furthermore, for some folks, it might change your perception of the hot and bothered 🎡 β€œGreat Balls of Fire”.Β  Lewis clearly had his fair share of issues – an understatement – but hard to deny this song right here is a surefire, rock and roll classic.Β Β Β

8. Alicia Keys, β€œGirl on Fire” Β

πŸ’Ώ Girl on Fire β€’ 🏷 RCA β€’ πŸ“… 2012Β

Alicia Keys, Girl On Fire [πŸ“·: RCA]β€œShe’s just a girl and she’s on fire πŸ”₯,” πŸ† Grammy winning R&B singer/songwriter πŸŽ™ Alicia Keys asserts on 🎡 β€œGirl On Fire”. β€œGirl On Fire” marks the crowning achievement from her 2012 LP, πŸ’Ώ Girl on Fire. Even though the girl which Keys sings about has the adversity of a crazy world against her, β€œShe knows she can fly away.” Why? Well, because β€œShe’s not backin’ down” and, of course, β€œThis girl is on fire!” β€œGirl On Fire” just missed the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at no. 11. It is worth noting, on the Inferno version, πŸŽ™ Nicki Minaj assists, performing the first and fourth verses (β€œDear God, if you’re here God / Make the fire disappear when they stare God”).β€―

Regardless of the mix, Nicki or no Nicki, Alicia Keys is the star of the show.β€― She sings well, painting a beautiful portrait of a strong, determined woman πŸ’ͺ.β€― The bridge marks a truly fabulous moment, where Keys makes it clear that this girl doesn’t show her flaws or insecurities in the least.β€―β€―Β β€―Β

β€œEverybody stands, as she goes byβ€―Β

β€˜Cause they can see the flame that’s in her eyesβ€―Β

Watch her when she’s lighting up the nightβ€―β€―Β

Nobody knows that she’s a lonely girlβ€―Β

And it’s a lonely worldβ€―Β

But she gon’ let it burn, baby, burn, baby.”

🎡 β€œGirl On Fire” speaks to women – empowerment, baby – but it should also be admired by men, too.β€― A strong woman deserves the admiration and respect of all πŸ’ͺ!β€―

9. Black Pumas, β€œFire”

πŸ’Ώ Black Pumas β€’ 🏷 ATO β€’ πŸ“… 2019

Black Pumas, Black Pumas (Deluxe)[πŸ“·: ATO]β€œGot a lover on my mind / That keeps me wanting, steady wanting more.” Ooh wee, that’s nothing short of – wait for it – FIRE πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯! 🎡 β€œFire” appears as the fourth track on πŸ’Ώ Black Pumas, the 2019, debut album by πŸ† Grammy-nominated duo, πŸŽ™ Black Pumas. πŸŽ™ Eric Burton and πŸŽ™ Adrian Quesada put their foot into this soulful gem.Β  Burton blesses us with utterly sublime vocals, while Quesada puts in work on the guitar 🎸 and behind the boards πŸŽ›οΈ πŸ’ͺ.

With the fire πŸ”₯ implied on β€œFire,” when does Eric Burton explicitly sing about it? That would be in the chorus. β€œThere’s a fire πŸ”₯, call the fireman πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’ / If you’re in pain, baby, call a doctor,” he sings, continuing, β€œDon’t be afraid to say, β€˜I need you’ / I will understand.” Hmm, clearly, this is a different kind of fire πŸ”₯! In the third verse, Burton confesses, β€œOh, I long for your lovin’, I can’t get enough / When you tell me I can be there when you love again.” WORD! All told, this four-minute plus joint rocks 🀘!

10. Katy Perry, β€œFirework”

πŸ’Ώ Teenage Dream β€’ 🏷 Capitol β€’ πŸ“… 2010

Katy Perry, Teenage Dream [πŸ“·: Capitol]Baby, do you know what you are? β€œYou’re a firework πŸŽ†!” WOO! It’s hard to believe that the πŸŽ™ Katy Perry classic, 🎡 β€œFirework”, arrived way back in 2010! Perry experienced the biggest success of her career, as her πŸ’Ώ Teenage Dream album was chocked-full of hits. β€œFirework” spent four weeks at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, tallying 39 weeks total on the charts.β€― The song features marvelous production (πŸŽ› Sandy Vee and StarGate), tuneful melody, a strong vocal from Perry, and most of all, inspiring, memorable, and uplifting songwriting (Perry and 🎼 ✍ Ester Dean join the production team as writers).β€―β€―Β

The inspirational, uplifting nature of β€œFirework” is what has always stood out to me personally.β€― In the first verse, Perry paints a picture of feeling worthless, and going through ample adversity. β€œDo you ever feel already buried deep?” she sings, adding, β€œSix feet under screams, but no one seems to hear a thing.”  Following these negative feelings and vibes, Perry shifts all things inspiring.β€― In the pre-chorus, she tells the hopeless, β€œYou just gotta ignite the light / And let it shine / Just own the night / Like the Fourth of July.” Why? β€œβ€˜Cause baby, you’re a firework / Come on show β€˜em what you’re worth / Make β€˜em go, β€˜Awe, aw, awe’ / As you shoot across the sky-y-y!” WOO! The second verse, following the epic chorus, embraces this newfound hope and fearlessness, contrasting with the mopey first verse.β€― Katy encourages us to open a new door! Even though the chorus is the sugar honey iced tea on this bombastic encouraging pop joint, the bridge must be mentioned in all their brightness! β€œBoom, boom, boom / Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon / It’s always been inside of you, you, you…” Just remember, whether it’s The fourth of July or nah, YOU own every night, darlings!β€―β€―β€―Β

11. Johnny Cash, β€œRing of Fire” Β

πŸ’Ώ The Essential Johnny Cash β€’ 🏷 Sony Music Entertainment β€’ πŸ—“ 2002β€―β€―Β

Johnny Cash, The Essential Johnny Cash [πŸ“·: Sony Music Entertainment]β€œLove is a burning thing / And it makes a fiery ring.” Indeed, πŸŽ™ Johnny Cash (1932 – 2003), indeed.β€― β€œBound by wild desire / I fell into a ring of fire.” Dang! 🎡 β€œRing of Fire” is one of the most iconic country songs of all-time, PERIOD.β€― In the hands of Mr. Cash, β€œRing of Fire” peaked at no. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963, one of two top-20 hits by the iconic country musician. The country standard was penned by Cash’s eventual second wife, 🎼 ✍ June Carter Cash and Merle Kilgore. Carter Cash didn’t write it for Cash, but rather her sister, Anita Carter, per Alex Baker of Fender. Unsurprisingly, early in πŸ† Grammy history, at the 6th Annual Grammy Awards, Cash earned his first Grammy nomination for Best Country & Western Recording.β€―Β

So, what makes β€œRing of Fire” the sugar honey iced tea? The theme and songwriting go a long way, particularly the catchy chorus.β€― Sing along if you know it!β€―β€―β€―Β

β€œI fell into a burning ring of fireβ€―Β

I went down, down, downβ€―β€―Β

And the flames went higherβ€―Β

And it burns, burns, burns,β€―β€―Β

The ring of fireβ€―Β

The ring of fire.”

Of course, those expressive, nuanced vocals of Johnny Cash are the biggest attraction πŸ’ͺ. That baritone is nothing short of amazing.β€― Also, throw in the mariachi horns πŸŽΊβ€― and the backdrop is distinct and sweet.β€― The groove is infectious, reminding us just how fabulous the country/western music of the past is.β€― Still, the focal point is the icon himself, Johnny Cash, who made 🎡 β€œRing of Fire” a gargantuan hit. The greatness of the song speaks for itself.β€―β€―β€―Β
