10 Rap Songs Associated with the Trap [Photo Credits: Def Jam, Epic, Pixabay, RCA]Among artists with songs appearing on the playlist “10 Rap Songs Associated with the Trap” are 2 Chainz, A$AP Ferg, and Future.

Atlanta, Georgia is kind of a big deal for a number of reasons – you can check that out for yourself.  For the purposes of this particular playlist, Atlanta’s claim to fame is trap music.  No, not all of the artists on this playlist are from the ‘trap capitol,’ but all of them appreciate the style and reference ‘trap’ in the respective song titles.  There are numerous rap songs associated with the trap/style, but on this particular playlist, trap MUST be included in the song title.  Among artists with songs appearing on 10 Rap Songs Associated with the Trap are 2 ChainzA$AP Ferg, and Future.

1. 2 Chainz, “Trap Check”

Pretty Girls Like Trap Music • Def Jam • 2017

2 Chainz, Pretty Girls Like Trap Music © Def Jam“Realest n*gga in it, already know / Got trapper of the year four times in a row.” “Trap Check” is among the best songs from Pretty Girls Like Trap Music, the standout 2017 album by 2 Chainz.  Yes, the crowning achievement of the LP is the smooth, soulful “It’s a Vibe”, but this trap banger gives it a ‘run for its money.’ Most of all, 2 Chainz packs a financial punch.

“Trap shit check, foreign shit check

Fashion shit check, cashing shit check

I ain’t talkin’ Nike when I’m talkin’ ‘bout a check

Bought your girl some Nikes when she asked me ‘bout a check.”

2. A$AP Ferg, “Trap and a Dream”

Ft. Meek Mill

Still Striving • RCA • 2017

A$AP Ferg, Still Striving © RCAA$AP Rocky gets off to a fast start on his mixtape, Still Striving, with “Trap and a Dream,” featuring Meek Mill. One word: BANGER. The trap is alive and well, with malicious production comprised of trap percussion, sub bass, and hellish synths. What a celestial damning experience, if such a thing exists! A$AP Ferg is on autopilot from the jump, while the same can be said of a fully ‘turnt up’ Meek Mill.

3. Rick Ross, “Trap Trap Trap”

Ft. Young Thug & Wale

Rather You Than Me • Epic • 2017

Rick Ross, Rather You Than Me © Epic“Trap Trap Trap”, featuring Young Thug and Wale, is the first clear-cut highlight from Rather You Than Me. A souped-up banger, The hook latches instantly:

“I took my roof off at the red light

I took my roof off at the red light

Trap, trap, trap, trap, trap, trap.”

Ross handles the first verse, testifying about toughness.  He flexes hard over epic, malicious production work, exhibiting a tight flow.  Young Thug takes the second verse, warning of the dangers of the trap, being rich, and violence – he’s armed and dangerous.  As for Wale, he goes against the grain, making an uncharacteristic record work near-perfectly.  After all, he “ain’t nothin’ like them trap guys.”

4. Future, “Super Trapper”

FUTURE • Epic • 2017

Future, Future © EpicThe concept is familiar AF for Future on “Super Trapper,” a song that appears on his 2017 self-titled album. One successful SOB, Future wants the whole world to know it.

“All these foreigns got me lookin’ inconsiderate

All these ‘xotic b*tches got me like a racist

I just throw that in the safe and then count it

My tennis bracelets lookin’ like a water fountain.”

It’s shallow, but nobody expects him to be profound, right?  Right.

5. Machine Gun Kelly, “Trap Paris”

Ft. Quavo & Ty Dolla $ign

Bloom • Interscope • 2017

Machine Gun Kelly, bloom © Bad Boy/Interscope“Trap Paris” featuring Quavo and Ty Dolla $ign isn’t really about Paris, France, but about how far the respective artists – namely MGK – have come.   Rapping the first verse himself, explicit Machine Gun Kelly is back full force.

“Woke up in Paris

Broke all the mirrors (that lean)

Watch me, last night was too turnt

They caught me f*cking on camera.”

More important than his sexcapades, he represents for Cleveland, for the umpteenth time in his career.  Ty Dolla $ign delivers the chorus, with his signature, raspy vocals. Quavo, like MGK, raps about coming up.

“Made it from the bottom, what you thinking of me?

Now I got some dollars, they keep hanging with me…”

6. Travis Scott, “beibs in the trap”

Ft. NAV

Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight • Epic • 2016

Travis Scott, Birds In the Trap Sing McKnight © Epic“Beibs in the Trap” is NOT about Justin Bieber – at least in the traditional sense.  It’s about cocaine, as well as Xanax and lean (purple drank).  While the name is clever, it wouldn’t be the first time a rapper has used Bieber as a reference to drugs. Meek Mill did this on “Believe It” from his 2012 debut album, Dreams and Nightmares.  There’s certainly a ‘lack of substance,’ or overindulgence into substance, depending on how you view it.

7. Fetty Wap, “Trap Queen”

Fetty Wap • 300 Entertainment • 2015

Fetty Wap, Fetty Wap © 300 Entertainment“And I get high with my baby / I just left the mall, I’m gettin’ fly with my baby, yeah / And I can ride with my baby / I be in the kitchen cookinpieswith my baby, yeah.” “Trap Queen” is the crowning achievement of rapper Fetty Wap.  Furthermore, it’s the crowning achievement of his self-titled debut, making the rapper a star in 2015. His girl (aka his “trap queen”) is helping him to cook up the dope he’s going to hustle. Despite its royal title, there’s nothing royal about the drug and stripper references (“Man, I swear I love her how she work the damn pole”). Sigh, at least the production is dope and the performance exuberant.

8. French Montana, “Trap House”

Excuse My French • Bad Boy / Interscope • 2013

French Montana, Excuse My French © Bad Boy / Interscope“They talking about me in the trap house / They asking ‘bout me in the trap house…What the business is stay up out of mine… they talking ‘bout me in the trap house.” On “Trap House,” produced by Jahlil Beats, French Montana is assisted by Rick Ross and Birdman. Do they strengthen his cause? Eh. As for Montana himself, he brags about his newfound status as a baller on his sole verse. “Trap House” doesn’t end up being deep in any sense (thematically or lyrically), but certainly stands out in the context of his so-so debut album, Excuse My French.

9. T.I., “Trap Back Jumpin”

Trouble Man: Heavy is the Head • Atlantic • 2012

T.I., Trouble Man: Heavy is the Head © AtlanticThe best song off of the 2012 T.I. album Trouble Man: Heavy is the Head is banger, “Trap Back Jumpin.” “Trap Back Jumpin” features dramatic production work courtesy of DJ Toomp. Here, the ATL rapper asserts it is time for him to show all the competition how it’s really done and who’s really the king.

“It’s time to get trap back jumpin’

Get shit back poppin’ ho, I show these sucka n*ggas how it go…”

T.I., on ‘autopilot,’ never cedes the reins or momentum here, making “Trap Back Jumpin” one of his very best.

“It’s time to getting bricks out of that bag

Put that scale back on the desk

Set that vision wear on the stove

Next to that bakin’ soda and Pyrex

Drop that water out off that pot

Let it boil up and get high

Then whip it good with your wrist like that

That’s how you triple every brick you get.”

10. Nicki Minaj, “Beez in the Trap”

Ft. 2 Chainz

Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded • Cash Money • 2012

Nicki Minaj came out swinging on the unapologetic “Beez in the Trap.” On the hard, catchyhook she spits:

“B*tches ain’t shit and they ain’t say nothing

A hundred motherf*ckers can’t tell me nothing

I beez in the trap, bee-beez in the trap…”

Aggressiveness should be the rapper’s middle name.  She’s certainly fueled by excellent, minimalistic, ‘gangsta-sounding’ production work.2 Chainz guests on the second verse, but definitely doesn’t usurp the queen, who is as aggressive as ever on the bridge prior to her final verse. She basically discusses haters talking about her and how she’s not going to stand for it.
