Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey, The Middle © InterscopeZedd and Grey make magic with an unlikely musician, versatile country artist Maren Morris, on fun dance record, “The Middle.”

Country and dance music could NEVER possibly go together. They represent two totally different ends of the spectrum, right? Right…at least to some degree. Talented German producer Zedd takes a risk on his new single, “The Middle,” tapping country singer Maren Morris for the assist.  Certainly, a unique choice. Furthermore, production duo Grey join the party. What ultimately results is a successful record, even if it sounds improbable on paper.

Here’s the deal. Maren Morris is incredibly versatile.  Her Grammy-nominated album, Hero, showcased her ability to transcend country music.  Here, while she has her share of grit, often part of the country script, she successfully amps up the pop as well.  Hearing her with vocal effects doesn’t sound like a stretch.  There is nothing at all country about the backdrop, as ZEDD and Grey remain firmly planted in the electronic dance idiom. Ultimately, no problem for Morris in the least.  The best moment is the chorus, which represents the catchy, big moment of “The Middle.”

“Oh baby, why don’t you just meet me in the middle? / I’m losing my mind just a little / So why don’t you just meet me in the middle? / In the middle.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, Zedd, Maren Morris, and Grey have another hit on their hands with “The Middle.” It’s well-produced, well-sung, and catchy.  While this dance record is by no means ‘the second coming,’ it’s a fun, well-rounded record. Definitely worthy of spins.
