Zedd & Katy Perry, 365 [Photo Credit: Interscope]Grammy-winning Russian-German DJ/producer Zedd enlists Katy Perry for his next potential big-time dance hit, “365.”

“And I wanna just let go, falling deeper than before / Say that you are read, lock it up in a heartbeat.” Katy Perry is back – well – via Zedd if you want to get technical about it.  That’s right, the DJ/musician/producer taps one of pop’s biggest stars for his newest single, “365.” Hey, the formula worked when he collaborated with Maren Morris and Grey on “The Middle”, even if no Grammys came out of it. It’s not about the awards, but the ear candy – well – something along those lines.

Slick, enigmatic synths commence “365.” Zedd definitely sets the tone, particularly with the rhythmic ostinato. This ostinato (repeated musical pattern) gives the record a hypnotic nature. Also, worth nothing, “365” is set in a minor key, giving it a darker vibe. The single never feels overproduced – Zedd does a nice job of not throwing too much at the listener.  Summing up his contributions, he does some awesome things.

Moving on to Katy Perry, she delivers the melody of the verses sensationally. “Got a premonition this ain’t gonna be a fling / You make the weekend feel like a year,” she memorably sings on the first verse. The hella brief moment where she shows off her upper register is among the bright spots; there’s some ‘character’ there you might say.  In addition to the melody, Perry also does a fine job delivering the rhythmic lines.  The chorus is catchy enough, but don’t call it the second coming.

“I want you to be the one that’s on my mind
On my mind, on my mind
I want you to be there on a Monday night
Tuesday night, every night
Are you gonna be the one that’s on my mind?
3-6-5, all the time
I want you to be the one to stay
And give me the night and day.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, things work out well for Zedd and Katy Perry.  Perhaps “365” doesn’t match the grandeur of the good, if overplayed “The Middle,” but this is clearly another hit for the DJ/producer. Furthermore, maybe it gets Perry back on track, particularly after Witness underperformed in 2017.  It’s not game changing, but these two are clearly onto something.
