Zayn, Still Got Time © RCAZayn returns with a new tropical-infused pop single, “Still Got Time.” He collaborates with an unlikely artist, PARTYNEXTDOOR.

Zayn broke free from One Direction, releasing his debut solo album in 2016, Mind of Mine. Mind of Mine gave the pop heartthrob a no. 1 hit, the risqué “PILLOWTALK,” a joint characterized by sexual endeavors. He returns with a new single, “Still Got Time,” with an unlikely collaborator – PARTYNEXTDOOR. Despite the unlikeliness that is “Still Got Time,” it works out much better than expected.

The best attribute of “Still Got Time” is the groove. From the jump, it’s easy to be trapped into nodding the head and tapping the foot. The groove isn’t particularly dynamic like a hip-hop record, but its chill and cool, yet still manages to pack a punch. The same could be said of the production work overall. The tropical-infused pop groove has become very popular, so it’s not far-fetched Zayn tries his hand at this sound. There is nothing that jumps right out at the listener, but the vibes can’t be denied. There’s charm here, sigh. The infectious factor is clearly in play.

What about the performances themselves? Zayn sounds like – wait for it – Drake. Guess who usually collaborates with Drake? PARTYNEXTDOOR. Perhaps because he channels his inner Drake on this single that’s why “Still Got Time” works. Drake has released numerous singles with a tropical-tinge, and numerous artists have tried to emulate him. Those artists include PND and Tory Lanez. Jason Lipschultz of Billboard recently penned an article about “Still Got Time,” asserting he plays the Drake card. Here lies the problem – Zayn needs to be Zayn, not Drake.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Zayn gives us a lite dessert with “Still Got Time.” PARTYNEXTDOOR adds the confectionary sugar. “Still Got Time” has a chance to be a hit, BUT, this isn’t a gem. It’s pleasant, gives temporary pleasure, but it’s not particularly memorable save for the infectious groove. Even that groove has been outperformed by many other records. Even if “PILLOWTALK” found Zayn overexerting himself, “Still Got Time” comes off a bit underwhelming. The good thing for Z? He’s “still got time” to find his own distinct hit.
