Pop singer ZAYN, who continues to be prolific in regards to releasing singles in 2018, enlists hip-hop standout for single “No Candle No Light.”
2018 has been an interesting year for pop artist ZAYN. His released numerous singles, some notable, others, not so much. One has to wonder, if the talented singer is having an artistic identity crisis, considering how different each and every single has sounded. Regardless, he’s back with yet another new record, “No Candle No Light,” featuring the one-and-only Nicki Minaj. The results are respectable, though not necessarily ‘game changing.’
“No Candle No Light” is an urban-/electro-pop flavored single. In regards to the production (Tushar Apte, Sawyr, and Brian Lee produce), it features a slick beat and slick synths, giving the record moody vibes. In regards to vocals, the record begins with Nicki Minaj singing on the first verse. She sounds respectable, but don’t call this her best singing performance ever. She’s joined by ZAYN on the pre-chorus:
“I, I woke up on the wrong side of ya
You don’t even know that I left, do ya?
Can’t handle my love
Can’t handle your lies
No friend zone to my love
Quit burning all of my time
I, I woke up on the wrong side of ya.”
Beyond the pre-chorus, the two superstars also deliver the chorus, which features few lyrics:
“No candle, no light for you.” ZAYN takes the reins on the second verse of the song, continuing to show case an excellent vocal tone. Nicki Minaj returns for the pre-chorus. Again, the vocals are okay, but don’t sound ‘elite’ to my ears. Like the first verse, the two come together for the remainder of the record, save for a Minaj outro.
Final Thoughts
All in all, “No Candle No Light” is an enjoyable single from ZAYN. Is it a hit? Eh, time will tell, but it’s easily an improvement over the questionable “Sour Diesel” or “Fingers”. ‘Stans’ for the former One Direction singer will likely be more enthused than I am. I like it, but I’m not quite enamored by it.
