In advance of his full-length, debut album, 18-year old rapper YoungBoy Never Broke Again drops the ‘stay-inside-touting’ single “Outside Today.”
Baton Rouge, Louisiana artist YoungBoy Never Broke Again is yet another teen rapper that seemed to come out of nowhere. The 18-year old high-school dropout is set to release his full-length debut project, Until Death Call My Name on March 2, 2018. Among the teaser tracks is “Outside Today.” “Outside Today” is short and sweet, barely crossing the two-minute mark. This isn’t unusual – a number of younger rappers are releasing shorter songs (Lil Pump and XXXTentacion are examples). At the top, YoungBoy Never Broke Again delivers a memorable hook, painting over a dramatic, minor-key backdrop.
“Tryna hide from the cameras, I ain’t going outside today / Couldn’t find Hi-Tec, so I’m drinking on Act today / I’ma pull up in style, we gon do a drive by in the Wraith / I’ma take it to trial, pray to Lord I beat the case.”
YoungBoy has an appealing flow – his rhyming agility is a pro. Lyrically, he isn’t deep or transcendent, but few newbies are – no strike against him. He’s cocky, confident, and hungry, which worth something.
“That money be callin’ I don’t do no talkin’ so get the fuck outta my face / Gotta tech and a chopper, with a hundred thousand dollars up in the wraith / You know I ain’t slippin’ you know that I’m with it I’ll shoot him right up in his face / Three say that I’m trippin’ you know that I’m drippin’ / I’m wrapped in saran today.”
Revisiting the aforementioned hook, the case, which he seeks prayer for, is an attempted murder case. Not good.
Final Thoughts
So, is YoungBoy Never Broke Again totally my new favorite rapper? No, but “Outside Today” is better than expected. Whether that’s low expectations for the new crop of rappers or merely the charm of YoungBoy, time will tell.
