Young Thug, Hear No Evil © AtlanticThe ever-idiosyncratic and prolific Young Thug returns with a new single, “Anybody,” featuring ‘The Queen,’ Nicki Minaj.  The results are mixed at best.

Nicki Minaj had a busy week, it’s safe to say.  She makes her appearance on the third single released on April 13, 2018, “Anybody.” This time there’s a difference – she’s not the lead artist. That would be Young Thug, who continues to be incredibly prolific.  “Anybody” is the first song on a single, Hear No Evil, comprised of three songs – “Up” featuring Lil Uzi Vert and “Now” featuring 21 Savage.

Against mysterious production work, Young Thug drops some meaningless hummed and sung ad-libs on the intro.  Nicki Minaj also gets into the action, asking the question, “Somebody called for the queen.” Thug gets things going with a lengthy hook that’s moderately catchy at best. He follows up with a verse that’s all flex and no substance, referencing Chanel, Margiela, and a Bentley. Following another iteration of the chorus, ‘The Queen’ arrives for her verse, which is confident to the nth degree. Eventually Nicki closes out in silly fashion: “Easy, Breezy Beautiful Thugger Girls.”

Final Thoughts

So, how does “Anybody” stack up? It’s okay, but certainly not game changing or worth writing home about. Young Thug has recorded songs and verses like this in the past, so what’s new? Nothing. Nick Minaj was more effective on two new singles released the same day as this one – “Barbie Tingz” and “Chun-Li.”  Aside from being idiosyncratic as always, Thugger doesn’t bring much to the table here.  Real mashed potatoes instead of instant please!
