Young Rising Sons, +Whiskey- © Dirty Canvas MusicRising alternative collective New Jersey band Young Rising Sons, fronted by Andy Tongren, shows tremendous potential on single “Whiskey.”

Sometimes, the most intriguing artists are those that are up-and-coming, as opposed to firmly planted within the industry. One such band that fits the characterization is New Jersey band Young Rising Sons (Andy Tongren, Julian Dimagiba, and Steve Patrick).  Young Rising Sons experienced their first taste of success courtesy of a 2014 viral hit, “High”. In addition to achieving buzz with “High,” performances alongside Halsey, The 1975, and The Neighbourhood speak to the incredible potential and promise of this collective. The resume is looking nice, but the music is sounding even better, specifically their latest single, “Whiskey,” which centers on various addictions.

“I can barely speak, barely hold my head up now
I feel buried in, shadows try and black me out
I’ve been carrying this bottle but it weighs me down
My addictive personality finally got the best of me.”

“Whiskey” is chocked-full of pros.  First, the music is tops among selling points.  The sound blends elements of alternative, electronic, and pop, yielding excellent results. The synths definitely hail from the electronic, modern pop musical spectrum, making the sound incredibly fresh. Clearly, eclecticism is in play, which makes Young Rising Sounds have quite the crossover appeal.

Moving beyond the production, the vocals are simply delightful.  Andy Tongren, a tenor, has a superb set of pipes, particularly in his upper-register.  From the start, he’s in command without ever having to over-sing or do too much.  He knows when to push more, selectively exhibiting more bite, fire, and grit.  Along with the vocals, the lyrics are compelling from the start, painting the picture of addiction, as aforementioned.  The centerpiece is the chorus, which is hella catchy to say the least.

“She put whiskey, whiskey, whiskey in the water

I try and fight it, but her proof stronger

I’m pinned against the altar, wrestling with the monster

But every time I try to leave, she pours herself into my drink.”

Final Thoughts

Young Rising Sons are indeed young rising stars without questions.  “Whiskey” is a winner through and through, thanks to great production, top-notch vocals, and excellent songwriting, particularly the chorus. If this band isn’t on your radar, you definitely need to check them out.  Below, you’ll find the band’s official website and social media.
