Rising pop musician Yoshi Flower impresses on his eclectic, ‘trippy’ single, “Just on Drugs.” Simply put, “We’re just on drugs / It’s not love.”
There’s a rising new artist on the horizon, and his name is Yoshi Flower. How does one characterize him stylistically? As Katie Krzaczek characterizes in her Billboard interview, “… He’s not concerned with fitting into any genre, which might be why it’s so hard to peg down Yoshi’s sound. It’s at once chill and hip-hop, melodic and bombastic.” Who cares about labels, right? Yoshi continues to build his case as the next big thing on single, “Just on Drugs.”
“Just on Drugs” is a brief number that doesn’t even reach the two-and-a-half-minute mark. The sound is alternative, with some trippy, neo-psychedelic cues. The backdrop and overall sound matches the theme of the song. Again, with such an eclectic style, Yoshi blends alternative, dance, hip-hop, and pop all-in-one.
Yoshi Flower delivers easy-going, mellow vocals, never getting too bothered or flustered. A nice rhythmic intensity arrives on the pre-chorus following the first verse. This section exhibits more hip-hop sensibility from the artist. The crowning achievement of the record is the repetitive, but catchy hook.
“We’re just on drugs
It’s not love.”
Following the chorus, there is a ‘post-chorus’ section that’s mostly instrumental but features some of the repetitive lyrics from the chorus. This is reminiscent of EDM, without serving up a sizable drop.
Final Thoughts
“Just on Drugs” is a short and sweet offering by Yoshi Flower. No, the problems of the world aren’t solved by this up-and-comer, but he certainly impresses without a doubt.
