YG, supported by a star-studded cast including 2 Chainz, Big Sean, and Nicki Minaj, not to mention producer DJ Mustard, drops a banger with ‘Big Bank.’
Star power. That’s what West Coast rapper YG has assembled together on his new single, “Big Bank.” He’s definitely not lying about ‘big’ part – he definitely has to fork over some bread to get 2 Chainz, Big Sean, and Nicki Minaj to collaborate with him. Add highly-demanded producer DJ Mustard to the mix, and the bill is astronomical. Now the question is, was it worth it?
Starting with the production, DJ Mustard gives YG and company a minimal, skeletal beat to work with. It’s simple, but it’s truly all any of the rappers need to shine. Therefore, the DJ deserves a handclap of praise (not in a blasphemous, heretical, or sacrilegious way). YG kicks the flex-fest off assertively, bragging about money and material things. One of his better lines comes at the end of his verse: “I got white folks money that I won’t blow.” He follows up with an utterly simple, yet infectious and effective hook:
“Big bank take lil’ bank, bank
Big bank take lil’ bank, bank
Type of money you gon’ need a safe
Type of money you gon’ need a bank…”
The rest of the crew gets their time in the spotlight, each earning their own verse. 2 Chainz arrives for the second verse, asserting at one point “And you know Tity [Boi] shinin’ like acrylic.” “First generation millionaire” Big Sean is proud of the fact that he “broke the curse in my family not having shit.” Nicki Minaj steals the show on the fourth verse – shocker – as she confidently spits, “Yep, the queen’s back, what’s happenin’? / Rerun, ‘bout to make these bitches rap again.”
Final Thoughts
Revisiting the aforementioned question – was it worth it for YG to spend all this money from his ‘big bank’ on “Big Bank?” Yes sir! #Banger.
