Yellow Claw, New Blood [Photo Credit: Barong Family]Dutch Producer/DJ Duo Yellow Claw enlists rising Los Angeles-based singer Valentina for their villainous new single, “Villain.”

Dutch producer/DJ duo Yellow Claw Jim Taihuttu and Nils Rondhuis– is known for its “bass-heavy productions and riotous performances.”  The duo returns with a hot new single, “Villain.” Notably, “Villain” features the debut of 20-year old, LA-based singer, Valentina (Valentina Cytrynowicz).  Safe to say, she gets off to a fast start.  “Villain” ends up being relatively short, but definitely sweet.

Expectedly, Yellow Claw does a fine job on the production end of things on “Villain.”  This is an energetic record, featuring a sleek, rhythmic backdrop for Valentina to paint on.   The beat and the syncopated synths are surefire fuel for the fire.  With her canvas of sorts, Valentina delivers rich and robust vocals.  Her vocal chops are impressive, something that’s not always the case with dance vocals.  The vocals truly standout on the pre-chorus.

Throughout the course of “Villain,” Valentina reflects on a past relationship.  On the first verse, she still wants to talk to her ex, but he’s done with her.  The case is the same on the second verse, with similar results.  On the pre-chorus, she apologizes for breaking his heart. On the simplistic, yet catchy, memorable chorus, she confirms her villainous role in the relationship.

“I’m the villain in your story, story

If I were you I wouldn’t call me, call me

‘Cause I’m the villain in your story, story

If villains don’t get to say sorry

I’m sorry.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, Yellow Claw and Valentina deliver an enjoyable, well-rounded record with “Villain.” Strong production work? Check.  Compelling vocals? Check again.  Relatable theme and respectable songwriting? Check 3x.  Good stuff.
