Dutch producer/DJ duo Yellow Claw continues to be prolific in 2018, dropping single “Fake Chanel” featuring rappers A$AP Ferg and Creek Boyz.
Dutch producer/DJ duo Yellow Claw – Jim Taihuttu and Nils Rondhuis – are known for “bass-heavy productions and riotous performances.” After dropping numerous singles in 2018, including “Villain” featuring Valentina (Valentina Cytrynowicz), the duo returns with “Fake Chanel.” The company that Taihuttu and Rondhuis keep on “Fake Chanel” is different, enlisting New York rap standout A$AP Ferg (“Plain Jane”) and up-and-coming Baltimore rappers, Creek Boyz. Safe to say, the track, which appears on their forthcoming album New Blood, bangs.
From the start, Yellow Claw gives the rappers a fiery backdrop to paint over. The synths are dark, energetic, and malicious, while the drums are hard-hitting and souped-up. Basically, what I’m saying is, the ‘fuel for the fire’ is right in front of them. A$AP Ferg takes the bait, on autopilot on the first verse as he raps about material things, sex, drugs, and money. It’s not the least bit deep or transcendent, but he rides the beat like a champ. He follows his verse with a repetitive, but fitting hook given the type of track.
“Fake hoe, all these fake hoes
Fake hoes, all these fake hoes
See you on Canal Street with the fake flows…”
Creek Boyz follow up on the second verse, in similar fashion. That means some drugs (“I just mixed the xan with the molly”) and sex (“…I’mma work her out somethin’ like pilates”). They also add a police reference for good measure (“Police tryna find me like I’m Nemo / Drugs and the smoke, we don’t reload”).
Final Thoughts
All in all, Yellow Claw, A$AP Ferg, and Creek Boyz deliver an enjoyable single with “Fake Chanel.” Again, the duo checks off boxes with strong production work, while Ferg and the Boyz work the beat with cliché, but fitting rhymes. It’s a bop.
