It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.  It is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, that ONE hit earned them recognition. So, in the 11th edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2026), we dive into “New Soul”, the one-hit wonder by Yael Naim.

“I’m a new soul / I came to this strange world / Hoping I could learn a bit ‘bout how to give and take.”
Ah, and thus begins “New Soul”, the unforgettable one-hit wonder by French-born Israeli musician Yael Naim (b. 1978).  No, Naim wouldn’t chart any other songs on the pop charts besides the gem from her 2007 self-titled album, but “New Soul” is incredibly sweet and well-written.  It reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100.  It was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. Naim composed it herself and produced it with her husband, David Donatien. Naim and Donatien also play multiple instruments on the track.

Naim rocks out on the fun piano accompaniment that kicks things off.  Following the jubilant intro, she impresses with her clear, expressive vocals.  She continues singing in the first verse, excerpted earlier, “But since I came here / Felt the joy and the fear / Finding myself making every possible mistake.” The melodies are tuneful in the verses and the “la-la-la-la” driven chorus, and the lyrics are memorable, too. The second verse is written similarly to the first.  Following the initial piano accompaniment, bass and drums enter the mix.  Also, the trombone (Sebastien Llado) enhances the enthusiastic sound. The bridge (“This is a happy end / ‘Cause you don’t understand…”) distinguishes itself from the verses and choruses. How so? A unique harmonic progression, contrasting melody and lyrics, and even a slightly more restrained vocal from Naim.  I love the layers that occur near the end of the record with the return of the first verse. Celestial choral vocals conclude “New Soul.” All in all, “New Soul” is a fabulous one-hit wonder by Yael Naim. Great songwriting, production, and vocals make this a special record.
