A more emotional, less unapologetic XXXTENTACION drops “SAD!”, a reflective single that finds the rapper singing about feelings of brokenheartedness.
20-year-old rapper Jahseh Onfroy, better known as XXXTENTACION, is back! The unapologetic rapper, once known for “Look at Me!”, returns with two much tamer singles, “SAD!” and “Changes.” “SAD!” keeps things ‘short and sweet,’ clocking in at 2:47. The production is moody and mysterious initially, gradually adding more details. The smoothness and vibe of the musical backdrop is a major selling point of “SAD!”
Following a 25 second intro, XXXTENTACION unveils the chorus:
“Who am I? Someone that’s afraid to let go, uh / You decide if you’re ever gonna let me know (yeah) /Suicide if you ever try to let go, uh / I’m sad, I know, yeah, I’m sad, I know, yeah.”
No rhyming from XXXTENTACION here. Much like 17 (2017), he’s singing as opposed to spitting hard, unapologetic bars. Beyond the chorus, there’s only one verse. During this verse, he shares his feelings of brokenheartedness.
“I gave her everything / She took my heart and left me lonely / I’ve been broken, heart’s contentious / I won’t fix, I’d rather weep…”
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, “SAD!” is enjoyable. XXXTENTACION clearly makes articulates his point. That said, it would be nice if he were to dig deeper and expound upon it more.
XXXTENTACION • SAD! – Single • Bad Vibes Forever • Release: 3.2.18
