On the 34th edition of 5ive Songs, 2021, we select five songs that are associated with the WINDOW in some form or fashion.
Welcome to 5ive Songs, where we keep things short and sweet – no extra calories or needless fluff! There’s a theme/topic, five songs, and a short blurb. Yes, it’s a playlist, but it’s a miniature playlist that shouldn’t take much time to consume. On the 34th edition of 5ive Songs, 2021, we select five songs that are associated with the WINDOW in some form or fashion. Okay, let’s get into it!
1. BROCKHAMPTON, “WINDOWS”
Ft. SoGone So Flexy
💿 ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE • 🏷 RCA • 📅 2021
🎙SoGone SoFlexy joins 🎙 BROCKHAMPTON for an epic, six-minute-plus gem from 💿 ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE, 🎵 “Windows.” SoGone So Flexy performs the intro and the first verse before we get performances by numerous members and associates of BROCKHAMPTON. 🎙 Merlyn Wood appears on the second verse and shouts out the late great Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest. 🎙 Matt Champion asserts, “I can see through your bullshit, like your face was made of plexi” on the third verse, preceding the 🎙 Jabari Manwa chorus.
🎙 Dom McLennon and 🎙 Joba drop the fourth and fifth verses, preceding a bridge fit for a boy band by 🎙 Ryan Beatty, and an interlude by 🎙 Kevin Abstract. Abstract returns for an outro but not before we get that sixth verse from 🎙 bearface. “Windows” runs long, but man oh man, is it a winner.
2. Still Woozy, “Window”
🎵 “Window” • 🏷 Still Woozy Productions • 📅 2020
In 2020, 🎙 Sven Gamsky, better known as 🎙 Still Woozy, dropped a short but sweet bop with 🎵 “Window”, a cool, chill single filled with sexy vibes. “Window” provides listeners with some decadent ear candy; it exemplifies combining electronic and acoustic elements. The guitars are rhythmic and chocked-full of soul, the bass robust, with keyboards amplifying the colorful backdrop. Those keyboards include electric patches, organ, and of course, synths. “Window” gets a lift from a 🎙 Marvin Gaye sample, 🎵 “I Heard it Through the Grapevine.” “Window” already had an urban-pop vibe but adding the soul icon to the mix further amplifies it.
Still Woozy does wonders instrumentally, as well as vocally. He delivers a cool, chill performance that definitely gives off vibes. He never breaks a sweat, yet the performance is alluring; quite compelling. Lyrically and thematically, he focuses on matters of the heart, endearingly singing on the first verse, “I know you like my goofy ass; how could you hate that? / I see what’s underneath and I love you more.” Of course, the centerpiece of the record is the sensual chorus: “Pull me closer please (longer) / I don’t even need you to explain / How much longer will you (Longer would you) / Keep me on your chain.”
3. Jazmine Sullivan, “Bust Your Windows”
💿Fearless • 🏷 J • 📅 2008
“I bust the windows out your car / After I saw you laying next to her.” Sigh, there’s nothing worse than a woman scorned! That said, I can’t blame 🎙 Jazmine Sullivan in the least for retaliating against her man on her classic, 🎵 “Bust Your Windows” from her 2008 debut LP, 💿 Fearless. She continues the first verse, singing, “I didn’t wanna, but I took my turn / I’m glad I did it cause you had to learn.” She goes on to say busting his windows was therapeutic.
Of course, Sullivan’s anger doesn’t cease after one verse – Oh HELL NO! “I bust the windows out your car / You should be lucky that was all I did,” she sings on the second half of the second verse. She continues with one of the best lines of the entire song: “After five whole years of this bullshit / Gave you all of me and you played with it.” What a snake. Well, at least we got one of the best R&B songs of the aughts out of it, right?
4. ZAYN, “Windowsill”
Ft. Devlin
💿 Nobody is Listening • 🏷 RCA • 📅 2021
🎙ZAYN is bold, risqué, and unapologetic on 🎵 “Windowsill,” which appears on his third studio album, 💿 Nobody is Listening. Here, there’s no shortage of “fucking,” literally. He opens up by “Fuckin’ on the countertop, window to the floor,” definitely raising eyebrows and making it crystal clear how things ‘go down.’
The chorus is not only profane, but quite catchy:
“Cigarettes and fuckin’ on the windowsill In my bed, yeah, tell me when you’re getting’ here Only thing I wanna know Is how far away you are.”
Serving up a change of pace, UK rapper 🎙 Devlin supports the electrifying experience, asserting at the end of the third verse, “I’m sure she’d tempt Satan if she ain’t the devil herself.” Amen, I think…
5. Melissa Etheridge, “Come to My Window”
💿 Yes I Am • 🏷 Island Def Jam • 📅 1993
“Come to my window / Crawl inside / Wait by the light of the moon / Come to my window / I’ll be home soon.” Sometimes, lovers are forced to sneak around – their bond or relationship can’t be out in the open at that given time. This happens with affairs obviously, but it can also occur with different types of relationships specifically same-sex relationships.
The phrase, “Come to my window” is obviously the key phrase from the 🎙 Melissa Etheridge classic, 🎵 “Come to my Window” from her 1993 album, 💿 Yes I Am. The title, Yes I Am, served as affirmation of Etheridge’s sexuality. The song itself is about a same-sex relationship, but keeps things simple without explicit details. Honestly, it’s an awesome rock record that doesn’t need additional details. On the bridge of this 🏆 Grammy-winning record, Etheridge sings, “I don’t care what they think / I don’t care what they say / What do they know about this love / Anyway.” Da-yum right Melissa!
