Boy band Why Don’t We are ‘innocently naughty’ on their innuendo-heavy new single, “Hooked.” Despite her bad reputation, the boys are ‘hooked.’
Sigh, it should come as no surprise as to what boy band Why Don’t We are “hooked” on their latest single, “Hooked.” If you guessed sex, you’d be 100% correct. Jack Avery gets things started, laying out the inescapable temptation on the song’s centerpiece, the chorus.
“You’ve got a bad reputation in my neighborhood / You drive me mad with temptation ‘cause it tastes so good / You know I wouldn’t walk away even if I could / It took one night, one try, ayy / Damn, I’m hooked (oh).”
No, the three-letter word is never mentioned, but the innuendo is apparent throughout the course of the record. On the first verse, Daniel Seavey mentions neck kisses and biting. On the pre-chorus, Zach Herron claims he doesn’t care “everybody says he’s sleeping with the enemy.” It’s much the same on the second verse, covered by Jonah Marais – “Baby, I’m the gasoline and your kiss is the spark / But then you take the wheel and crash my car.” Not only is this girl with a bad reputation the bomb, but as Corbyn Besson adds on the bridge, “You’ve got me under your influence / I swear I’m never gonna give you up.”
Final Thoughts
They theme is tried-and-true for Why Don’t We. Nonetheless, the boys successfully convey the relatable, delivering a solid vocal performance and a catchy chorus. The supporting production is also solid, blending elements of pop and urban contemporary. A selling point about this particular boy band is how they seem to acknowledge the 90s and early 00s throughout their music. They aren’t anachronistic, but the throwback to a time when the boy band was truly popping actually bodes well in their favor. Not game changing, but a likable, pleasant offering.
