Continuing a strong promo campaign for their 2019 album (‘Weezer (Black Album)’), Weezer drops a colorfully-titled second advance single, “Zombie Bastards.”
“Die, die, you zombie bastards / We know what you want.” Any time the word bastard graces the song title of a pop record, it’s almost guaranteed to be compelling and worth checking out. Weezer becomes the latest act to use ‘the other b-word’ on “Zombie Bastards,” the second single from their forthcoming album, Weezer (Black Album). Unfortunately, fans excited for the Black Album will be forced to wait until March 2019. Thankfully, following the enjoyable “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” Rivers Cuomo and company remain entertaining on “Zombie Bastards.”
As aforementioned, “Zombie Bastards” is an entertaining record. How/why? The answer is tongue and cheek lyrics, and of course the great, hipster personality of Rivers Cuomo. The record isn’t what you’d call transcendent, but the lyrics are colorful, and at times, fun. “Welcome to the jungle, to the jungle / Baby, it’s you and me,” Cuomo sings on the first verse, later continuing, “Walk between the raindrops… / Singing along to Queen / My heart pumps Kool-Aid.” Adding to the allure of “Zombie Bastards” is the aforementioned chorus, which later continues on:
“We can go up, we go down
We gon’ run you out of town
We’ll be seein’ you around
Yeah
Die, die, you zombie bastards.”
Besides the lyrical highlights, “Zombie Bastards” is soundly produced, incorporating guitars, a sick groove, and of course, some synths. The only major reservation I have regarding the record is the length. No, four-minutes and 15 seconds isn’t extremely long, but even as much of a ‘bop’ “Zombie Bastards” is, it could’ve been trimmed slightly.
Final Thoughts
Pacific Daydream was a weaker Weezer album in my opinion. While the jury will still be out on Weezer (Black Album) until it arrives in March 2019, I’m much more optimistic about the project after hearing “Can’t Knock the Hustle” and “Zombie Bastards.” No, “Zombie Bastards” won’t change your life, but it’s another solid musical offering from Weezer, and that counts for something.
