We Hate Simon, Feel Like I Feel © We Hate MusicDon’t let the name We Hate Simon fool you.  On his debut single, “Feel Like I Feel,” the Swedish producer delivers ‘the goods,’ assisted by TIGERS, -TREES+.

We Hate Simon. What a cool, if cruel name! Simon Bäckström drops his debut single, “Feel Like I Feel,” as the aforementioned alias (again, cool, if cruel). Bäckström describes “Feel Like I Feel” as “a youthful, energetic pop song about love.” He likens the sound of the record to Swedish electronic act, CAZZETTE meets stateside legends, Beastie Boys. Simon “gets a little help from friends,” specifically TIGERS, -TREES+.

“Feel Like I Feel” commences abruptly. Early on, We Hate Simon comes bearing the gifts of energetic synths. Notably, a number of synths possess an unsettled nature, including waviness. Add incredibly rhythmic drums, and the awesomeness of “Feel Like I Feel” expands even more. Speaking of matters of the production, the production work is tasteful.  This is a big selling point. The record never feels under- nor overproduced. It’s cleanly and soundly executed – uncluttered, allowing space for the record to breathe.

As “Feel Like I Feel” progresses, additional instrumentation beefs up the production. Even so, it never grows overwrought, always maintaining balance. Yes, the production is the crème de la crème, but the vocals and subject should be highlighted as well.  Overall, they’re exuberant and expressive. And, just as Bäckström described, the theme is love.  Given into love is evidenced by lyrics such as, “If you feel like I feel / We shouldn’t take it slow.” Sigh.

Final Thoughts

Truth be told, we DON’T hate Simon. For all the reasons highlighted above, “Feel Like I Feel” is a strong debut singer from the Swedish musician/producer. Solid, tasty production, relatable subject, and great contributions from TIGERS, -TREES + makes this a winner without question.
