Washed Out – aka Ernest Greene – returns after a four-year hiatus with a groovy, new single, “Get Lost.” As always, the vibe dominates “Get Lost.”

After a four-year hiatus, chillwave is back.  Better yet, Washed Out (Ernest Greene), the musician with a heavy hand in the aforementioned sound, has returned.  The last time we were privy to the music of the difficult-to-categorize act occurred in August 2013, when Paracosm was released.  Greene and Washed Out are back with a new single, “Get Lost,” this time on label Stones Throw.

“Get Lost” opens with various sounds: hi-hat hit, ostinato piano, saxophone, sirens, and people talking. Soon enough, an infectious groove is established. This groove is irresistible to the nth degree – it’s inescapable throughout the course of the song. The driving force behind the groove is drums and piano.

“Get Lost” resembles a house record.  Perhaps the best way to characterize it, hence, is as an indie-house joint, if such a thing exists. The vocals by Ernest Greene sound more like a soundscape. The lyrics are difficult to decipher.  This seems intentional.  While Greene certainly wouldn’t waste time composing lyrics if he didn’t think they’re important, ultimately, he seems to be going more for a vibe than poetry.

Final Thoughts

If nothing else, Washed Out hypnotizes on “Get Lost.”  This isn’t memorable lyrically, but musically, the sounds he uses are compelling.  Ultimately, “Get Lost” is a pleasing, relaxing listening experience.
