Voodoo RaysVoodoo Rays Excite With New Album, ‘Empire’

Contributed by George James

A

s demonstrated by their most recent album, ‘Empire,’ Voodoo Rays have the indie spark pouring through their veins! The band from London are potent, and this album will be ear medicine for all who enjoy their music with a unique twist.

The album starts with the high-energy piece ‘Chantal‘. The guitars have an echoing effect that reverberates around, and the exciting bass lead gives the song an extra twist while the vocals soar above the production. Plenty of gripping elements are on display here, with the group delving deep into the dark side of the indie game.

On Columbia Road‘ has a slightly distinct aesthetic, and it begins with a piano arrangement that welcomes us with its ballad-style flow. It has an atmosphere reminiscent of the 1980s and sounds like it could have easily fit in with the music at that time. While the vocals dip in and out of the mix, the soundscape brings a raw quality to the fore, giving it an authentic feel, and the lyrics have a similar likeness to those of The Rakes and even Damon Albarn from Blur.

Another song that stands out to us on this album is ‘All Danced Out‘, and while listening to it, we feel as though we are getting further removed from our surroundings and more immersed in the music that permeates the air around us. This song is propelled forward by the bass, which exudes a laid-back vibe throughout the piece and serves as the primary driving force.

The last tune on the album is ‘Empire‘, and it serves as the album’s title track. It is the most extended piece on the album and perhaps the most compelling of all of them!
