on Venn, the alternative music project fronted by Gary Cox, return more vital and more compelling than ever with the release of ‘Constant Girl‘.‘Constant Girl’ is, without a doubt, one of the most appealing indie-rock jewels released recently. It welds a multitude of inspirations into one, and from the very beginning, Gary Cox demonstrates his skill as a musician. Also, it is a release that connects immediately. Furthermore, it addresses the concept of realising that a relationship is not all it once was in the early days, leaving one pondering its path.
“Constant” represents the consistency that one puts into a relationship, practically going through the motions and never realising the need to take a step back to reflect on sentiments and what is happening around them. Gary tells a story that provokes thought, and he does so in a way that leaves it up to us to speculate on where the story will go from here; in the end, the direction the story takes is under our hands.
Was it deliberate that ‘Constant Girl‘ sounds like early Radiohead recordings? It is difficult to say, but Gary has revealed in public interviews that he does find influence in Radiohead’s songwriting and in John Lennon. When you delve into the track’s crux, that becomes apparent.
The chorus is one of the most memorable passages of this work since the melody envelops us and continues to linger for some time afterwards. Additionally, the music here works perfectly with one another, producing a soundscape that is difficult to criticise.
