Welcome to Music Lifts, featuring songs that encourage, inspire, and uplift the spirit; songs that exude fortitude, positivity, and resolve, even in the face of adversity.  Featured songs aren’t genre-specific; songs may or may not be faith-based. The goal is for these songs to make you feel better – be LIFTED to new heights!  So, for the sixth edition of Music Lifts (2026), we highlight “The One” as performed by Voices of Fire featuring Pharrell Williams.

“He ain’t your four / He ain’t your three / He ain’t your two / He the one.”
The He that the Voices of Fire are referencing in the intro of “The One” is G-O-D, God! Amen! An ‘abbreviated’ version of “The One” appeared on the gospel choir’s 2025 album, OPHANIM.  The full-length version,  featuring Pharrell Williams, arrived later. “The One” is contemporary gospel with a heaping dose of Pharrell Williams’s influence and production.  Williams composed “The One” with Bishop Ezekiel Williams, ABSOLUTELY, Sarah Aarons, and The-Dream (Terius Adamu Ya Gesteelde-Diamant).

What stands out most about “The One” is the sound.  If you have followed Pharrell Williams or The Neptunes, the sound captured here is familiar.  Futuristic, space-funk, with a unique, hard-hitting beat.  The record is unusual, but that is what makes it stand out, particularly for a gospel record.  Following the intro, confirming that God is the one, Voices of Fire unleash the first verse where they emphasize people won’t help you (“When the world says they’ll help you but they not / They too busy tryna make the rain stop / When there’s more galaxies than the raindrops”).  The bridge (the former intro) precedes the high-flying chorus. “We don’t leave the church ‘til the energy is done,” they assert, and add, “People shouting up and down the aisle, watch ‘em run / He is not the ‘or’ or the ‘and’, he is the one.” Word.  Following a break, Williams drops a Christian rap verse: “You know who it is, know what he about / Any false idols, he’s taking them out.” Later, Voices of Fire deliver one more verse, confirming Jesus as the one.  “The One” is a refreshing contemporary gospel record.  Traditionalists may be less optimistic about it, but for those who don’t mind a fresh take on gospel music, the praise is lit to the nth degree. God is, indeed, THE ONE! 👏 🙌
