Ah, bring on Midnight Heat 🕛 🔥! Wait – it is not usually hot at midnight! Well, it is steaming hot 🥵 at midnight when it comes to this naughty, innuendo and sex-laden column featuring songs intended for nighttime. Yeah, we are talking about that after dark type $hi†, ya dig? These risqué, unapologetic records often raise eyebrows and temperature alike. In the 3rd edition of Midnight Heat (2024), we explore the naughty, sexy vibes behind, “Sex Over the Phone” by Village People.

Record a sexually charged song that raises eyebrows, like “Sex Over the Phone.” Focusing specifically on the excerpted lyrics, they should be dated by 2020s standards, however, the ability to enjoy sex via the phone – cellphones now – has only expanded.

Bitmoji ImageStill, can anyone deny that “Sex Over the Phone” is a prime example of camp central.  “I can lie there in my bed, painting pictures in my head,” the collective asserts, adding, “ I just touch my princess and I go crazy.” Is it far-fetched? Nope.  Adult entertainment and self-pleasure remain high in demand, even if lines regarding the payphones and specific adult entertainment phone numbers are dated. “This is the part I hate / Why do they make you wait? / Here’s where the fevers rise / Enough to cross my eyes.” Yeah, the waiting period isn’t a thing now… 😈 But, we must remember, the internet wasn’t a thing back then.  Honestly, The Village People can thank technological advancement for the reason “Sex Over the Phone” is surprisingly relevant almost 40 years later.  It’s dated in sound mind you – very much idiomatic of the 1980s – but, when you’re getting none, you can get some, over the phone.  Of course, there are also hook-up apps these days, too.
