Ah, bring on Midnight Heat 🕛 🔥! Wait – it is not usually hot at midnight! Well, it is steaming hot 🥵 at midnight when it comes to this naughty, innuendo and sex-laden column featuring songs intended for nighttime. Yeah, we are talking about that after dark type $hi†, ya dig? These risqué, unapologetic records often raise eyebrows and temperature alike. In the 13th edition of Midnight Heat (2024), we explore the naughty, sexy vibes behind, “Please U” by Usher.

Usher, Coming Home [📷: mega / gamma.]“Listen to my heartbeat, baby / Listen to my heartbeat, looking for you, ooh.” Grammy-winning, R&B superstar Usher wants to “Please U”. Ooh-la-la! And honestly, who wouldn’t oblige? “Let’s take this good night, make it better,” he sings in the first verse of the 15th track on his 9th studio album, Coming Home. He continues, “These sheets is dry, let’s make ‘em wetter.” Oh, the innuendo! This song was penned by multiple songwriters: Anthony Watts, Lucky Daye, Earl Shuman, Isaac Fontaine Bolivar, Jackson Lee Morgan, Leon Carr, and producer, Vaughn Oliver.  Oliver does a marvelous job behind the boards.  Notably, “Please U” heavily samples “Hey There Lonely Girl”, a 1987 song recorded by Gerry Woo. If that title sounds familiar, Woo was covering an oft-covered hit written by Shuman and Carr, hence their credits on this particular song. But this isn’t about Woo or an oldie – this is about Usher and a titillating sex song!

Throughout the course of “Please U,” Usher serves up smooth and sexy vocals. He flaunts off the richness of his tenor, including ripe falsetto.  Furthermore, beyond the melody, Mr. Raymond IV gives us sensational ad-libs and riffs.  Revisiting the melodies, they are tuneful in the verses and chorus – a great match for those pleasure-laden lyrics.  “Ooh, treat you like you my opps, I want all the smoke,” he asserts in the second verse, adding, “Now we face-to-face… / Girl, it’s my pleasure win or lose.” Woo! Of course, the chorus is the section to beat:

“When you let me please

Please let me, please let me please you

I know you got needs (Needs, oh-oh)

So please let me, please let me please you

‘Cause all of my intentions are good (Oh-oh)

I’d fall to hell and back and you know that I would

Just to please (Oh), let me, let me, yeah (Let me).”

Yes, Usher, yes! Even though “Please U” is grown and sexy, Usher doesn’t cross the line – it’s a tasteful, three-minute sex song. Still, that midnight heat… it’s heating up 🥵!
