Irish alternative rock band Under Starling compel on โIcarus,โ an awesome, conceptual first single from their forthcoming debut album.
Introductions can be incredibly sweet, particularly when you are being introduced to something potentially great. Folks, meet Irish alternative rock band Under Starling, comprised of
Danny Dunford (lead vocals, guitar), his brother,
Tommy Dunford (drums, vocals),
Colin Drummey (bass), and
Alex Pollock (keys, guitar, and vocals). This intriguing Galway, Waterford based band is excited to release their debut album in later 2021, following โmany obstacles.โ What were such obstacles? Finishing college and of course, that swear word otherwise known as COVID-19 โ yuck (rhymes with another word)! Despite such obstacles, their time has come, with the release of
โIcarusโ, the first single from their aforementioned, forthcoming debut album. This awesome record, which definitely shows tremendous potential, was produced and mixed by
Graham Byrne and mastered by
Pete Maher. And YES, to answer your burning question, it is based on the famous Greek myth.
Danny provides some insight into โIcarusโ:
The narrative of the song goes back and forth between 2 characters, an optimist wading through life's oncoming choices, and a pessimist attempting to โclip their wings,โ however in the end the optimist would rather crash and burn trying, than to never try at all.
Awesome, now, onto some notes about the song! Things start off on the โup and upโ on โIcarus.โ I love the instrumental introduction, which truly sets the tone for whatโs to come. Here, the guitar with effects is quite sweet โ definitely ear-catching! Soon enough, Under Starling adds additional rhythm, which helps to establish a consistent driving groove from the drums. All of this sweetness occurs before one note is actually sung. Of course, where the bread is buttered is the vocals as well as fine songwriting. Danny serves up vocals that are equal parts assertive, commanding, and beautiful. His tone is awesome โ youthful and exuberant! Sweetening things even more are the use of harmonized background vocals. Also, worth noting, I heart how the intensity ramps up as โIcarusโ progresses. Danny ascends to the next level โ new heights โ serving up even more grit and oomph than anticipated. Rock TF on! Whether or not youโre committed to the concept of the song or not, just hearing it, you totally understand youโre hearing something truly special and elite.
Final Thoughts
No, Under Starling may be an unfamiliar name and band right now. But I highly suggest you get to know them. If โIcarusโ is the quality of product we get to hear from this Irish collective, then theyโre sure to be going places sooner than later. Pencil in these guys as the next big thing!
