Ugly God, Imma Dog © Asylum WorldwideUgly God plays on tired, old clichés on single, “Imma Dog.” The 2017 XXL Freshman gets the assist from another up-and-coming rapper, PnB Rock.

“I’m tryna f*ck on every b*tch that’s tryna flirt.” Ugly God was among the 2017 XXL Freshmen.  In 2017 he released a mixtape, entitled The Booty Tape.  Charming to say the least.  That tape featured its share of unapologetic song titles, including “I’m a Nasty Hoe,” “I’m Tryna F*ck,” and “F*ck Ugly God.” Again, charming.  He joins forces with another up-and-comer, PnB Rock, on the brief single, “Imma Dog.”

“Imma Dog” isn’t particularly profound or prolific.  The record clocks in at a brief two-minutes-and-nineteen seconds.  Interestingly, for such a short number, the instrumental intro feels a bit on the long side.  It’s good stuff – rock-solid production – but sort of foreshadows a lack of lyrical depth.  PnB Rock delivers the melodic hook, which is a selling point.  It’s not the second coming or anything, and there have been more memorable, catchier hooks, but it’s successful.

Ugly God follows with the sole verse of the record.  Essentially, he confirms his characterization of his self on the title.  “But I’m a dog, you should have known better / Like why the f*ck you love me? huh.”  That’s a good question.  He goes on to expound on his doggish ways, rapping, “I sneak out while you sleep, why the f*ck you cuff me, huh / Like what the f*ck you think, you act like a dummy, huh.” Yadda, yadda, yadda.

Final Thoughts

After listening to “Imma Dog,” there’s little to take away from it. This record “is what it is,” and ultimately, that’s not much.  There’s no depth, there’s no length, and Ugly God says nothing brand new. These rappers need to expand their palette beyond these tired, old clichés.
