In the 45th edition of Bangerz N Bopz đ„ (2025), we break down âTake Your Mask Offâ performed by Tyler, The Creator.
âI hope you find yourself / And I hope you find yourself / And I hope you take your mask off.â Say that, Tyler, The Creator (and Daniel Caesar, too)! âTake Your Mask Offâ has a hard act to follow in the context of CHROMAKOPIA. âStickyâ, in all its glory, precedes it (âBetter find a mop itâs getting sticky in this bitchâ). âStickyâ is a showstopper, but âTake Your Mask Offâ is formidable in its own right. It has a deep and thoughtful message, as well as a tuneful, memorable chorus. The Grammy-winning rapper helms the production, delivering a lush, jazzy, and soulful backdrop. Â âTake Your Mask Offâ samples multiple elements of the 1976 song, âA Feeling Insideâ (Peopleâs Pleasure), and, more familiarly, vocals and lyrics from âSo Anxiousâ (Ginuwine). In addition to Caesarâs Grammy-winning pipes, LaToiya Williams is also credited as a featured guest.
Tyler, The Creator delivers a compelling cadence and flow throughout âTake Your Mask Off.â Heâs smooth yet never backs off real talk.  In the first verse, âa good kid, fine home, mom and did in the picââ doesnât âwanna be seen as a bitch.â So, what does he do? Gets involved in a gang although heâs not a thug and doesnât come from that background. âBut now cuz gettinâ validation from the dumb and confused,â Tyler raps at the end of the verse, continuing, âNow youâre facinâ five to ten âcause you had somethinâ to prove, letâs talk about it.â In the second verse, Tyler tackles false prophets: âPreacher man, preacher man, preach (Woo) / You make these folks think you got somethinâ to teach, like you ainât lyinâ.â Yes, Tyler is an atheist, but, he assertions arenât far-fetched, as he criticizes clergy for treatment of gays, and mentions their extracurricular activities⊠with boys (âBut you back on that religious shit as soon as you cum, letâs talk about itâ). Hiding behind a mask, again. There is a unique interlude by Bonita Smith (Tylerâs mom) that precedes the fourth verse: âKeep that shit one hundred with you, with yourselfâŠâ A change of pace occurs during the fourth verse, arguably the most accomplished. In several instances, Tyler speaks on the consequences of not taking the mask off: âBetter sit the fuck down or that skull gettinâ took,â âYou ainât gotta hide from the truth,â and, most memorably, âNow go stand in the sun, use some fake tears to water your roots / Take the mask off and tell âem the truth.â âTake Your Mask Offâ marks another accomplished moment from CHROMAKOPIA as well as Tyler, The Creatorâs riveting music catalog.
