Ty Dolla $ign, "Hottest in the City" [Photo Credit: Atlantic]Hip-hop standout Ty Dolla Sign, assisted by rappers Juicy J and Project Pat, drops a wild, ‘depth-free’ banger with “Hottest in the City.”

Ty Dolla Sign is quite the intriguing urban artist.  He’s quite versatile, given his ability to drop bars while also having quite the distinct singing voice.  It’s not surprising at all that he’s one of the most popular artists in regard to collaborations.  As a solo artist, he’s done okay for himself, dropping some quality material while not exactly igniting the charts on fire. Nonetheless, he’s cooking up some new music, including the hella distinct single at hand, “Hottest in the City.”

“Hottest in the City” is crazy – in a good way though.  There are two distinct parts.  Juicy J dominates part one, backed by a tough, dirty south beat.  Following his intro, Juicy J is unapologetic, opening the first verse with “Beat the pussy like I’m Joe Jackson…” Ty Dolla Sign enters the picture on the second verse, boasting about his drip as asserting, “All she want is new Chanel and Celine glasses.” Ty takes the reigns on the über-confident chorus:

“Who the hottest in the city?
Ain’t no n*gga in this bitch did it like I did it…”

There is no ‘tone down’ on part two with its production switch.  On the intro, Juicy J chants, “North Memphis,” before Project Pat takes the reigns on the first verse. Of course, the Project Pat song of the same title is sampled – shocker! Pat’s focus? A total hottie who is going to experience “rich sex” you might say.  Ty Dolla Sign takes the second verse, keeping it filthy with lines like “Promised her a Tesla if she swallow all the kids” and “That pussy stay wetta when it’s on a raw dick.” Of course, Project Pat returns on the third verse, focused intensely on her private parts, and for good measure, reviving “skeet, skeet” (it never died really though).  Ty closes this scattered, lack of depth joint with the outro, which includes pitch-shifted vocals, gimmicks, and all-around wildness.

Final Thoughts

“Hottest in the City” is… something.  This is a banger through and through with no redeeming qualities, at least where the theme is concerned.  As a record itself, it’s quite compelling because of the numerous changes, hard-hitting production, and the energy that Ty Dolla Sign, Juicy J, and Project Pat bring to the table.  It’s a mess, but at least an intriguing, energetic mess.
