On “Ex,” his latest single from Beach House 3 (arriving October 27), Ty Dolla $ign states he will not be coming home to his main chick tonight.
Eclectic. That’s the best way to describe Ty Dolla $ign. He is part singer, part rapper, part head scratcher. Regardless how you characterize him, he always good for some interesting music, for better or for worse. Not everything he’s released ahead of Beach House 3 (October 27) has been great, but he’s remained restless and intriguing. His latest offering, “Ex,” featuring YG, is definitely intriguing and among his better singles from Beach House 3.
“Ex” begins lushly, foreshadowing a sexual tilt. After he drops his signature runs (he has quite a robust, thick vocal tone), Ty Dolla $ign tells us exactly where he’s going with “Ex.” Following the slow intro, he drops the centerpiece of “Ex” – the chorus.
“I just text my main chick / I told her I ain’t coming home / I just text my main chick / I told her, I ain’t coming home, tonight.”
Expectedly, the chorus is catchy AF, and sets up a groovy, fun, carefree joint. On his verse, he Ty Dolla $ign focuses on the past – hooking up with his ex. As for YG, who arrives for the second verse, he could care less about any exes. He raps:
“Give my last to these naked b*tches / Leave your main squeeze for these naked b*tches, yeah / That’s how you know, when it’s all bad / She call me or text, I could call back / But she imagine in her head I’m doing all that / I tell her I’m not, she like, ‘YG, you a thot.’”
Final Thoughts
All in all, “Ex” is more sound and vibe than substance. Given its brevity and the subject matter, that’s perfectly fine. This isn’t a song, but rather a record, and as a record, it works out well. Great production work, the distinct vocals of Ty Dolla $ign feel right here, and YG provides a nice contrast to Ty. The second coming? Nah, but enjoyable by all means.
