3.5 out of 5 stars

Ty Dolla $ign, Beach House 3 © AtlanticTy Dolla $ign, assisted by Future and Swae Lee, drops “Don’t Judge Me,” the final single arriving in advance of his sophomore album, ‘Beach House 3.’

Eclectic.  That’s the best way to describe Ty Dolla $ign.  He is part singer, part rapper, part head scratcher.  Regardless how you characterize him, he always good for some interesting music, for better or for worse.  Not everything he’s released ahead of Beach House 3 (October 27) has been great, but he’s remained restless and intriguing.  Like his previous single “Ex,” “Don’t Judge Me” ranks among his better singles from Beach House 3.

“Don’t Judge Me” has plenty of pros working in its favor.  First of all, the production work is great.  Hard drums and lush, urban contemporary sounds make for superb palette of sounds.  After a brief intro by Swae Lee, early on, Ty Dolla $ign ensures he’s the star of his own track.  He properly kicks things off with the hook.  The hook is a bit lengthy, but still quite appealing and catchy.

“On the ‘liqs’ right now, don’t judge me / Right now, off a bean don’t judge me / I might pop a seal in the morning / Lately, I’ve been goin’ through a lot of things…”

Following the hook, Ty Dolla $ign delivers a short verse, following up himself with more himself on the hook.  To reiterate, he ensures he’s the star.  Future takes the second verse, quoting the hook, as well as adding a threesome, and, various drugs to the mix.  As for the ever distinctive Swae Lee, like his colleagues, he “can’t be touched” either.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Don’t Judge Me” is enjoyable and well-produced.  Compared to the other pre-release single from Beach House 3, this is one of the better records.  Future and Swae Lee are perfect for this particular joint.  The second coming? Nah, but again, enjoyable.
