Ubiquitous hip-hop musician Ty Dolla $ign, assisted by southern rappers Gucci Mane and Quavo, returns with the delicious, enjoyable single, “Pineapple.”
Ty Dolla $ign has become a fixture in urban and pop music in the 10s without a doubt. The man is making bank given the number of records he’s appeared on. Despite this, as a solo artist, he’s had less commercial success. After releasing a quality studio album in 2017, Beach House 3, the project didn’t perform particularly well on the Billboard 200, following a respectable debut just outside the top-ten. Not “crying over spilt milk,” the rapper/singer returns with a new single, “Pineapple,” featuring Gucci Mane and Quavo.
The first thing that stands out about “Pineapple” is the production. Set in a minor key, this record is melodic, anchored by the trap percussion on the bottom end. The tempo is slow, while the vibe is relaxed. The rhythmic drum programming is the least relaxed instrumental feature of this record. In regards to the bars, the slow pace is perfect fuel for Gucci Mane, who delivers the first verse in his usual, unhurried, southern style. As for Ty Dolla $ign, he drops the catchy, repetitive hook (lots of pineapple), followed by a quasi-pop-rap/quasi-sung verse.
“Shorty seen my wrist, said it look like pineapple
Shorty super thick, bet she taste like pineapple
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, pineapple
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, pineapple.”
Other than the groove itself, the Quavo lays claim to the quickest part of “Pineapple,” going against the overall balanced, relaxed vibe. For the millionth time, he references Patek. Sheesh.
Final Thoughts
All in all, “Pineapple” is a catchy, enjoyable number courtesy of Ty Dolla $ign and company. Is the hip-hop wheel reinvented? In no way, shape, or form. This is a good track, not a great, game-changing one. Still, it’s tasty.
