Ah, you know what time it is! Itโ€™s 3 to 5 BOPS time โ€“ WOO! On 3 to 5 BOPS, itโ€™s all about brevity and sweetnessโ€ฆ for the most part! Thereโ€™s a theme/topic, 3, 4, or 5 songs, and a blurb โ€“ two paragraphs or less.  3 to 5 BOPS, hence, is a mini playlist that shouldnโ€™t take much time to consume.  In the 70th edition of 3 to 5 BOPS (2023), we select songs that are associated with TRY in some form or fashion. The BOPS arrive courtesy of ๐ŸŽ™ Darren Haynes, ๐ŸŽ™ George Michael, ๐ŸŽ™ Kirk Franklin, ๐ŸŽ™ Shakira, and ๐ŸŽ™ Teddy Pendergrass. Okay, letโ€™s get into it!

1. Kirk Franklin, โ€œTry Loveโ€

๐ŸŽต โ€œTry Loveโ€ โ€ข ๐Ÿท Fo Yo Soul Recordings / RCA โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2023

Kirk Franklin, Try Love [๐Ÿ“ท: Fo Yo Soul Recordings / RCA]โ€œThis is your day love / This is your day that you canโ€™t get away / I been waiting all day love (How ya doinโ€™ love) / Waiting for your embrace loveโ€ฆโ€ ๐Ÿ† Grammy winning gospel artist ๐ŸŽ™ Kirk Franklin delivers ample love and inspiration on ๐ŸŽต โ€œTry Loveโ€, written alongside ๐ŸŽผ โœ Andy Morris, Ian Owen Devaney, and Lisa Stansfield. Franklin produces this gem with ๐ŸŽ› Devin Morrison and Maxwell Stark. At the onset, the choir provides amorous, exuberant vocals in the eventual chorus, setting the tone. โ€œTry Loveโ€ is filled with positivity, emphasizing the power of love: โ€œGet out and touch somebody / Love somebody / Hold somebody / Donโ€™t you know that you just may be the only Jesus that they see.โ€ As far as sound, โ€œTry Loveโ€ features sweet melodies and a solid, highly effective harmonic scheme.  Also, there are delightful vocal harmonies, always a pro.  While the chorus is the section to beat, the bridge is notable, providing a distinct change of pace, following the brief second verse. The tempo is quicker, while the message of love remains constant: โ€œLove on the cross You paid the price (Cโ€™mon) / Thatโ€™s why I trust You with my life, and I take the chance and try love / Donโ€™t say goodbye love.โ€ As always, Franklin plays the role of encourager, minister, preaching L-O-V-E. All told, โ€œTry Loveโ€ has a great message that believers and non-believers can get behind โค๏ธ โค๏ธ โค๏ธ.

2. Shakira, โ€œTry Everythingโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Zootopia (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) โ€ข ๐Ÿท Disney Enterprises, Inc. โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2016

Shakira, Try Everything [๐Ÿ“ท: Disney Enterprises, Inc.]โ€œBirds donโ€™t just fly, they fall down and get up.โ€ Do not underrate the power of song from a Disney soundtrack! ๐ŸŽฆ Zootopia (2016) has a marvelous song that both children and adults can learn from: ๐ŸŽต โ€œTry Everythingโ€ performed by Colombian superstar, ๐ŸŽ™ Shakira. Written by ๐ŸŽผ โœ Sia, who has penned her fair share of uplifting tunes, and ๐ŸŽ› StarGate, who also produce, โ€œTry Everythingโ€ dented the Billboard Hot 100 at no. 63 Regardless of whether youโ€™ve seen Zootopia, this soundtrack cut stands alone from the film. โ€œI messed up tonight, I lost another fight / I still mess up, but Iโ€™ll just start again,โ€ she sings in the first verse, adding, โ€œI keep falling down, I keep on hitting the ground / But I always get up now to see whatโ€™s next.โ€ Basically, we all make mistakes, but the key is to get up and try again, not give up.  In fact, in the bridge, she asserts, โ€œIโ€™ll keep on making those new mistakes / Iโ€™ll keep on making them every day / Those new mistakes.โ€ Why? Because we are only human and imperfect.  Mistakes help us to learn and become stronger.  Because the song touts a spirit of fearlessness, in the chorus, Shakira makes the proclamation, โ€œI wonโ€™t give up, no I wonโ€™t give in / โ€˜Til I reach the end and then Iโ€™ll start again,โ€ later encouraging us to โ€œTry everything!โ€ WOO!

3. George Michael, โ€œOne More Tryโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Faith โ€ข ๐Ÿท Sony โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 1987

George Michael, Faith [๐Ÿ“ท: Sony]โ€œโ€˜Cause teacher / There are things that I donโ€™t want to learn / And the last one I had / Made me cry.โ€ The timeless ๐ŸŽต โ€œOne More Tryโ€ was a no. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 from ๐Ÿ’ฟ Faith, the biggest album of ๐ŸŽ™ George Michaelโ€™s career, ultimately winning the ๐Ÿ† Grammy for Album Of The Year at the 31st Annual Grammy Awards. Had Michael never released another album, Faith was enough to cement his legacy. โ€œNow I think itโ€™s time / That you let me know / So, if you love me / Say you love me / But if you donโ€™t / Just let me go.โ€ โ€œOne More Try,โ€ an utterly sublime ballad, plays to his strengths, allowing him to flaunt his gorgeous tone.  Running nearly six minutes in duration, Michael milks this gem for all itโ€™s worth, and who can blame him! Even better than Michaelโ€™s ravishing good looks was his marvelous instrument.  Regarding production, โ€œOne More Tryโ€ is firmly planted in the 80s. The backdrop, fueled by electric keyboard (the patch, pads, and synths) sounds little like the music of the aughts and beyond.  Despite lacking flashiness or pizzazz, the sound feels right. Beyond the vocals, shout out Michaelโ€™s songwriting skills. The result is a personal, authentic song that shines thanks to simplicity and sheer artistry.  The chorus is the centerpiece, thriving off love and heartbreak:

โ€œAnd teacher

There are things that I still have to learn

But the one thing I have is my pride

Oh, so I donโ€™t want to learn to

Hold you, touch you

Think that youโ€™re mine

Because there ainโ€™t no joy

For an uptown boy

Who just isnโ€™t willinโ€™ to try.โ€

All told, ๐ŸŽต โ€œOne More Tryโ€ is a classic that remains potent approaching 40 years later.

4. Darren Haynes, โ€œLetโ€™s Try Being in Loveโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Homosexual โ€ข ๐Ÿท Powdered Sugar Productions Ltd. โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2022

Darren Hayes, Homosexual [๐Ÿ“ท: Powdered Sugar Productions Ltd.]โ€œAm I five decades? Am I twenty-four /โ€ฆ Teenage passion, middle-aged despair / All the pregnant thoughts linger in the air,โ€ ๐ŸŽ™ Darren Hayes sings on the single, ๐ŸŽต โ€œLetโ€™s Try Being in Loveโ€, from his 2022 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Homosexual.  Woo, itโ€™s hard to believe that the ๐ŸŽ™ Savage Garden heartthrob is in his 50s ๐Ÿคฏ! Hayes, who is openly gay (and married) never mentions sexuality explicitly on โ€œLetโ€™s Try Being in Love,โ€ BUT it sounds very queer, and the accompanying music video is โ€“ wait for it โ€“ G-A-Y!

pride heart burstFrom the onset, the record draws you in with its hypnotic beat (production courtesy of ๐ŸŽ› Matthew Rowbottom).  Danceable and groovy, Darren Hayes runs with it, emphasizing L-O-V-E.  The desire is legit, as Hayes sings in the first verse, โ€œItโ€™s in the air, bergamot and humidity / Iโ€™ve seen it before in your eyes, adolescent dreams.โ€ Woo! In the second verse, the sensuality is lit too, as Hayes asserts, โ€œI absolve all my responsibilities / If I take your hand in my mouth will I taste the sea? / Eros evolves by the pool, skin inviting me.โ€ It all leads to the centerpiece, the chorus, where Darren states, โ€œLetโ€™s try being in love.โ€ Interestingly, the second time Hayes sings the chorus, he ascends an octave โ€“ a welcome musical touch.  As referenced earlier, the bridge finds Hayes reflecting, playing into the theme of the song but also extending, referencing his age, etc.  Hayes may be in his 50s, but he proves heโ€™s โ€˜still got itโ€™ on ๐ŸŽต โ€œLetโ€™s Try Being in Loveโ€

5. Teddy Pendergrass, โ€œCanโ€™t We Tryโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ TP โ€ข ๐Ÿท Sony Music Entertainment โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 1980

Teddy Pendergrass, TP [๐Ÿ“ท: Sony Music Entertainment]Breaking up is hard to do. Truer words have never been spoken. On the 1980 soul ballad, ๐ŸŽต โ€œCanโ€™t We Tryโ€, ๐ŸŽ™ Teddy Pendergrass (1950 โ€“ 2010) is struggling to end things with his significant other.  The breakup is inevitable, but he hates to see this result. โ€œCome lay your head on my heart / Soon itโ€™ll be apart, stay here to the touch of morning.โ€ Regardless, the couple is ending things as friends, but still, it is S-A-D.  โ€œIn case I donโ€™t see you again,โ€ Pendergrass sings in the second verse, โ€œReally wish you well, baby, this is hell.โ€ Indeed, indeed.

The crowning achievement of this gem from ๐Ÿ’ฟ TP, lyrically, is the chorus.  Teddy Pendergrass is a master at balladry and โ€œCanโ€™t We Tryโ€ ranks among his best.  It is a shame it only managed to peak at no. 52 on the Billboard Hot 100! Anyways, he sings, lovingly:

โ€œCanโ€™t we try

Love was never born to say goodbye

Just another helpless fool in love is what I am

But I donโ€™t give a damn

Sorry, I forgot myself

I guess that Iโ€™m just not myself.โ€

classicOf course, TP is not himself โ€“ heโ€™s breaking up with his baby ๐Ÿ˜ข! Even though it is a sad day for him, it is sweet music to our ears.  That music is amplified by lush production, courtesy of Teddy and ๐ŸŽ› Jack Faith (who arranges).  Who penned this sheer excellence? Why, that would be ๐ŸŽผ โœ Ronald Miller and Ken Hirsch. Kudos fellows! Of course, the star of the show that is ๐ŸŽต โ€œCanโ€™t We Tryโ€ is the late, great, sexy baritone himself, Mr. Teddy Pendergrass.
