Troye Sivan, "Take Yourself Home" [Photo Credit: Universal Music]Pop sensation Troye Sivan returns with fierceness, slaying on his first single of 2020, the certified bop, “Take Yourself Home.”

After a quiet 2019, Troye Sivan is back! Sivan is one of the preeminent LGBTQ+ musicians in the game, even if he’s questioned if he’d be more successful if he weren’t gay.  It’s a legit question I supposed, but after following Troye for years, it’s hard to disassociate his music from the LGBTQ+ community in any fashion.  But, Sivan has a point about his success in regard to being under – Bloom was a fabulous album that should’ve had more buzz, period.  Moving on, Sivan blesses us with a new bop, “Take Yourself Home.”

On “Take Yourself Home,” Troye Sivan sounds exceptional.  As always, Sivan barely breaks a sweat as he sings.  He sings with incredible ease, yet packs a sizable punch with his colorful, expressive voice.  In a time where falsetto is kind of a big deal, it’s always welcome to hear the rich, bassy vocals that Troye serves up. That’s the best aspect of “Take Yourself Home.”  That said, it’s not the only win the record can tout.

Troye Sivan has awesome production to work with, courtesy of Oscar Görres (OZGO).  OZGO gives Sivan a backdrop that incorporates traditional pop guitars as well as dance and electronic touches, courtesy of keyboards and programming.  One of the best touches from Görres are the synthesized horns – a sound previously unassociated with Sivan.  Another winning part of “Take Yourself Home” are the background vocals.

There’s even more greatness worth analyzing on “Take Yourself Home.” That greatness is, the songwriting, or at least select, thrilling moments.  Of course, the centerpiece is the chorus:

“I’m tired of the city, scream if you’re with me
If I’m gonna die, let’s die somewhere pretty, ah, ah-ah
Sad in the summer, city needs a mother
If I’m gonna waste my time, then it’s time to go
Take yourself home.”

Final Thoughts

Have I already mentioned that “Take Yourself Home” is another certified bop for Troye Sivan? If not, let me take the time to do so! “Take Yourself Home” shines thanks to great vocals, colorful production touches, and of course, the songwriting. #Slay.
