“And it’s true, baby / I’ve been saving this for you, baby.” Ah thanks Troye Sivan – such a sweetheart! Anyways, throughout 2018, the alternative pop sensation has been releasing new music. An album is on the horizon – we’re all just waiting on the ‘when.’  He definitely thrilled on his debut album, Blue Neighbourhood, which deserved a Grammy nomination (just saying).  After releasing compelling singles “My My My!” and “The Good Side”, not to mention “Strawberries & Cigarettes” (LoveSimon soundtrack), Sivan drops a new single, “Bloom.”

On the first verse, Sivan takes us on a trip…

“Take a trip into my garden

I’ve got so much to show ya

The fountains and the waters

Are begging just to know ya.”

Following the first verse, the earlier refrain provides more perspective as to where Sivan is going. On “Bloom,” he’s seems willing to bloom sexually.  The innuendo is ‘out of the roof.’  The second verse is more risqué without being explicit, including the lyrics “I guess it’s something like a fun fair / Put gas into the motor…” Even though “Bloom” encompasses the physical, Sivan also highlights the emotions of the experience, which is what separates this from songs that are merely about, say, empty sex.  On the pre-chorus, he sings, “Hold my hand if I get scared now,” which represents vulnerability, a legitimate emotion associate with losing one’s virginity.  On the chorus, Sivan exhibits his dedication to his boyfriend, willing to ‘give it up’ because he truly ‘feels some type of way’ about him.

“(Yeah, I bloom) I bloom just for you

(I bloom) just for you

Come on, baby, play me like a love song

Every time it comes on

I get this sweet desire

(Yeah, I Bloom) I bloom just for you

(I bloom) just for you.”

Final Thoughts

Troye Sivan continues to ‘bring the heat.’ Yes “Bloom” regards sex, but Sivan manages to make it emotional, meaningful, and maybe most importantly, relatable.  He’s off to a good start for his forthcoming sophomore album.
