It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.  To be fair, it is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, it’s that ONE hit that earned them recognition. So, in the 15th edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2024), we dive into “All Gold Everything”,  the one-hit wonder by Trinidad James.

[📷: Def Jam]“Gold all in my chain, gold all in my ring / Gold all in my watch / Don’t believe me, just watch.” Rapper Trinidad James is renowned for one solo hit: “All Gold Everything”.  “All Gold Everything” reached no. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100. You can’t knock a top-40 hit, right? Furthermore, “All Gold Everything” was certified platinum by the RIAA. Produced by Devon Gallaspy, A cocky and confident Trinidad James rides the beat hard.  He says nothing of substance, though one of his key lyrics mentions substance: “Popped a molly, I’m sweatin’, woo!” At the time Don’t Be S.A.F.E. was released, 2013, molly (ecstasy) was trending in rap. Thankfully, it ceased.

boxingTrinidad James doesn’t have anything transcendental to offer on “All Gold Everything,” but beyond the molly lyric, he delivers interesting bars. At the beginning of the sole verse, he sets the tone: “This ain’t for no fuck-nigga.” Noted. He then drops some wordplay and establishes who “All Gold Everything” is for: “If you a real nigga, then fuck with me / This one for the hood niggas / Hipster bitches that shop at Lenox.” Oh, and when it comes to women, all ethnicities are welcome! James goes on to mention strippers (“That’s pussy poppin’ at Magic City”), weed (“Smokin’ mid, my nigga / Then don’t pass that shit to me”), and ‘religion’ (“Mama always told me: ‘Boy, count your blessings’ / In God I trust, so I kept counting them Franklins”). Maybe “All Gold Everything” is more well-rounded than I gave it credit for? Kidding, kidding! Trinidad James was dropped from Def Jam in 2013, a year removed from the success of “All Gold Everything”.  Admittedly, while not being a big fan of the song or the rapper, I acknowledge the impact of “Gold” in hip-hop in 2013.  Also, to be fair, James did earn a second gold single as a lead artist, “Just a Lil’ Thick (She Juicy)”, even though it didn’t chart.
