Trey Songz, Shootin Shots [Photo Credit: Atlantic]Trey Songz keeps his overt sexual formula ‘alive and well’ on single “Shootin Shots,” which features appearances from Ty Dolla $ign and Tory Lanez.

At this point, we all know that Trey Songz is good at singing about sex.  That’s old news.  Even so, the R&B singer continues to build his career around carnal matters, and it still seems to work.  Case in point is his single, “Shootin Shots,” in which he pairs up with two more sex-loving R&B/hip-hop artists, Ty Dolla $ign and Tory Lanez.  The wheel may not be reinvented on “Shootin Shots,” but the sex sure remains ripe.

Trey Songz doesn’t belabor things on “Shootin Shots,” keeping those ‘shots’ contained to abut 3:10.  The record opens with a cappella intro vocals by Songz – “You caught a vibe, vibe shootin’ shots, why not? … Baby, I’m a do it.” Notably, the vocal production is on-point, characterized by smoothness. Post-intro, the soulful urban contemporary groove and production successfully backs Songz on the chorus.

“I’m going non-stop, my spot

You caught a vibe shootin’ shots, why not?

Tell me the things you wan’ do

Baby, I’ma do ‘em to you.”

The chorus latches more the second time (post-Songz’s first verse), coming off catchier and more memorable.  On his first verse, Songz continues to bless the listeners with his lovely, sensual vocals.  He’s definitely aggressive when it comes to sex – shocker.

“I’m fucking with you now, guess she must have blow it

You know the real me

It’s more than feelings

Give you that energy tonight.”

Basically, Songz emphasizes the importance of getting laid. Naturally, Ty Dolla $ign does the same on the second verse, with his distinct, course singing voice which contrasts Songz.  He asserts:

“I’ma dick her down, she said she want a real n***a…

Sloppy when she gave me Becky, don’t be messy.”

Classy. Anyways, Tory Lanez lends his unique pipes on the third and final verse, spitting even more sexual game.

“The way you workin’ that dick, you deserve a raise, baby

I gotta say that pussy is cray, I’m feeling the wave, baby

Tippy of my tongue, and feel on your waist, baby…”

Final Thoughts

From the start, it’s crystal clear that sex is the M.O.  Go into “Shootin Shots” like that, and you should come out relatively satisfied – serviced if you will (too far?).  The record isn’t the second coming of R&B, but for what it is, it’s respectable… maybe that’s not quite the right word…
