A brand-new Travis Scott album is on its way…in the near-future.  The 26-year old, idiosyncratic hip-hop artist always brings something interesting to the table. Not everything always works, but Scott is an intriguing artist to say the least.  That is the case once more on his new single, “Watch,” featuring Lil Uzi Vert and the ever-controversial Kanye West.

Following an intro, Lil Uzi Vert is the first major player on “Watch.” It begins with the hook, where Lil Uzi raps about the size of his Rollie, having sex in the hallway (!), and counting money all day.  Cliché stuff, but whatever.  On the first verse, Uzi continues the flex-fest, spitting about the “Plain Jane”, diamonds, Raf, Patek Phillipe – again, the shallow, materialistic stuff.

Travis Scott takes the reins on the following hook, before unleashing his verse.  While Scott references a “bankroll,” much of his verse seems to be devoted to substances, particularly white substances.  “Angel in the snow (white), always leave me cold (ice) / Leave it on the floor (what?), but she’s slidin’ from the pole…” After a joint hook with Lil Uzi, Kanye West delivers arguably the most compelling verse.  Besides his own references to Rollies, as well as slipping in a Larry David/Seinfeld line, his most captivating lyrics relate to opioid addiction and “The Sunken Place”“Poopy-di scoop / Scoop-diddy-whoop…”

Final Thoughts

Substance is NOT a strong suit of “Watch.” Sometimes, there’s simply nothing wrong with an empty banger. That’s what Travis Scott has on his hands with “Watch.”  It’s a semi-quirky, well-produced banger that features one of the most polarizing people on earth – Kanye West.  Yeah, there’s Lil Uzi Vert too, but West, as much of an @$$hole as he has proven himself to be, knows how to get folks talking about him again.
