Grammy-nominated rapper Travis Scott delivers a surefire vibe on “Mafia,” the companion single to “Escape Plan.”
“F
uck shit up at the club, shit tucked / We be floatin’ front to back, back to back, Bentley truck!” Woo – what a turned-up chorus, 🎙 Travis Scott! It’s been a few quiet years for the 🏆 Grammy-nominated rapper. His last album arrived in 2018, 💿 ASTROWORLD. Sure, he’s had a no. 1 hit single post-ASTROWORLD (🎵 “Franchise”), but the buzz didn’t last too long. Scott returns with two new singles, 🎵 “Escape Plan” and 🎵 “Mafia”. Both singles are worthwhile listens. Of course, the release of both singles has been overshadowed by the ASTROWORLD tragedy…Focusing on “Mafia,” it runs longer than “Escape Plan”, clocking in at 4 minutes. Furthermore, the tempo is slower and in no rush whatever. From the onset, it’s a V-I-B-E, which is the expectation for a Travis joint! Scott is indeed true to self, delivering his chill, laid-back, melodic approach. Even when he swears, like the excerpted chorus lyrics, he tends to be smooth. As always, there are ample vocal effects in play. Notably, Scott changes his voice/vocal inflection more on the second verse. Naturally, the intensity increases. As far as the sound of “Mafia,” I love the use of the piano within the production (🎛 Jahaan Sweet and 🎛 Boi-1da). Furthermore, I also heart the rhythmic, trap beat. Another pro? Those hums!
Final Thoughts 💭
All in all, “Mafia” is a success for Scott. Does Travis change the game with this single? Nope, but he does a nice job of flexing and again, being true to self.
